Dear Parents/Guardians: Another year has come and gone and I am sure that everyone will remember this one in particular, especially the last few months. It truly has been rather unique to say the least. I know that it has been a struggle for many of us and I want to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience as we worked through some challenging times together – moving to remote learning after spring break and then moving back to a hybrid model of instruction June 1 st . It really was a lot in a short time, but I think we did a great job in getting through it together. My thanks to all the staff for their work in changing the way they taught and to all of you in helping your children with their learning. I want to thank some of the staff members who are leaving us this year. Their commitment and dedication to Stoney Creek Community School has been greatly appreciated and they will be missed. Ms. Hope is retiring, Ms. C Smith and Ms. Mazurek are moving to École Aubrey Elementary, Ms. Bewley is moving to Lochdale Community School, and the following staff members have temporary contracts that are ending; Ms. Pagnucco, Mr. Oreskovich, Ms. Petrovska, Ms. Carson, Ms. Bindra, and Ms. Garcia. We wish everyone the best of luck in their new positions/adventures. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our families, and the staff a wonderful and safe summer. I know this year has been a challenging one and there is much uncertainty surrounding September. Please try to forget about that over the summer and spend time relaxing with family and friends and enjoy your time together. Dear Parents/Guardians:

Another year has come and gone and I am sure that everyone will remember this one in particular,

especially the last few months. It truly has been rather unique to say the least. I know that it has been

a struggle for many of us and I want to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience as we

worked through some challenging times together – moving to remote learning after spring break and

then moving back to a hybrid model of instruction June 1st. It really was a lot in a short time, but I think

we did a great job in getting through it together. My thanks to all the staff for their work in changing the

way they taught and to all of you in helping your children with their learning.

I want to thank some of the staff members who are leaving us this year. Their commitment and

dedication to Stoney Creek Community School has been greatly appreciated and they will be missed.

Ms. Hope is retiring, Ms. C Smith and Ms. Mazurek are moving to École Aubrey Elementary, Ms. Bewley is

moving to Lochdale Community School, and the following staff members have temporary contracts

that are ending; Ms. Pagnucco, Mr. Oreskovich, Ms. Petrovska, Ms. Carson, Ms. Bindra, and Ms. Garcia.

We wish everyone the best of luck in their new positions/adventures.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our families, and the staff a wonderful and safe

summer. I know this year has been a challenging one and there is much uncertainty surrounding

September. Please try to forget about that over the summer and spend time relaxing with family

and friends and enjoy your time together. And remember as Dr. Henry says, “Be kind, be calm,

and stay safe.”

Thanks to the many parent volunteers who have helped out

throughout the year - from volunteer drivers to fruit and veggie

sorters, guest readers, pizza lunches, library book sorters, and more

– we appreciate you all so very much!

Thank you to our amazing community partners who have helped in many ways throughout the year – from donations to student programs to volunteering – we appreciate you! Special thanks to the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Association, Creekside Youth Cen-tre, Burnaby Parks & Rec, Burnaby Mountain Secondary, Save On Foods Highgate, Tzu Chi Foundation, Burnaby Family Life, Cameray, NEBCA (Garden & Fun Rec), Stoney Creek Envi-ronment Committee, Lori Snyder, Stream of Dreams, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver, Burnaby Public Library, YMCA, Burnaby RCMP, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., SFU Faculty of Communica-tion, Fraser Health, Burnaby Neighbourhood House, … and more! You have truly helped to make our school a “community” school!

A big THANK YOU to our dedicated Breakfast Program parent volunteers: Elijah Beretta, Matt Rayner, Xara Gobhai, Yvonne Reid, Vickie Tseng, Tanya Shikulsky, Trinity Bissett, and the Tzu Chi Foundation Volunteers - Jeff & Olivia. Because of you, every morning students were fed breakfast and started their days off on a positive note! We couldn’t have done the Breakfast Program without you.

Also, another huge THANK YOU to our Stoney Creek

Community Council for your valued input, planning

and fundraising for the entire school community. Pizza

days, Breakfast with Santa, Fruit & Veggie program,

Safety Committee, the various fundraisers, new

technology…all of these plus more wouldn’t have happened

without your volunteered time and commitment to

learning, our students, and our community.

GSSO Logo contest winners

Do you remember the contest from earlier in the Spring? Winners were chosen and bags were produced. They

will be kept for next Spring when we will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Great Salmon Send Off. Winners

were Shreya in Grade 3 for the green bag and Kenzi in Grade 3 for the blue bag. Congratulations girls!

Shreya, Grade 3

Kenzi, Grade 3

We did a virtual Welcome to Kindergarten info package/video

this year. Any families who missed receiving the package, can

email [email protected] . We look forward to

meeting you in September!

Our next steps for the Healing Garden

Moving forward our Healing Garden has reached the stage of concept drawing and is currently a

discussion for students, staff and community on the blog. The plan is to collect feedback on the idea and

come up with an informed design to move forward with. I recently spent time with Lori Snyder and she

is very interested in helping us with plants and planting as we reach that part of the plan.

Furthermore, a parent in the community has a fence art project that will beautify the outdoor classroom

with feathers along the tennis court fence. Enriching the area will be Indigenous lessons created with a

parent who is collaborating on this art installation. Connections are being made and ideas are growing.

Jump Rope for Heart

Hi, our names are Priya & Devin and we love supporting the Heart & Stroke Foundation Jump Rope for Heart event

in honour of our Aunty Trisha. On August 7, 2019 our Aunty Trisha suddenly and unexpectedly passed away at the

age of 32 from sudden cardiac arrest. We love and miss her a lot. We would like to raise awareness to try to help

others. Cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly stops beating. Please see the picture below to learn some

facts and the steps to take when someone goes into cardiac arrest.

Unfortunately we could not hold our Annual Jump Rope for Heart event this year. If you would still like to support

the Heart & Stroke Foundation, click this link. Here is a message from two of our students:

Congratulations to Jiya, from Division 2, who entered the Burnaby School District’s

STEM Video Contest. Her topic was Adhesives and she was one of three winners

who were recognized for “Outstanding” Achievement. Well done Jiya!!

PAC Fundraising—School Supplies and Labels

Stoney Creek Community Council is once again offering two ways to help ease and simplify your life when your

children return to school in September. These options are in fact fundraisers for our Council and are an easy way

for you to support Council as well.

Fundraisers organized by Stoney Creek Community Council help support programs within the school, field trips,

technology, and more. Both campaigns are open for ordering now. If you have any questions regarding either

campaign, please email [email protected].

We thank you for participating and hope that everyone is staying well.

School Supply Packages through Creative Packs for the 2020/2021 school year. This is op-

tional – if you wish to purchase your own school supplies, please feel free to do so. As well as

being a fundraiser for the Community Council, this is offered for your convenience and Council

feels it is good value. Your student school supply packs can be ordered online by clicking here.

Part A: The essential pack with items chosen by your teacher/school. This comes as a package deal with all items listed included. Items cannot be changed, substituted, or omitted.

Part B items: You may already have these items at home and you certainly can bring them from home. But if

you wish to purchase through Creative Packs, please add Part B items to your order now.

Part B items must be ordered at the SAME TIME as the Part A pack. You cannot come back to the web-

site and order Part B items separately.

Payment types accepted are VISA, MasterCard, PayPal,

Vanilla Prepaid VISA or MasterCard gift cards.

After July 5th, a shipping fee of $10.25 per box will be applied and the pack will be shipped by Canada Post to

your home address. Packs will have a tracking number that will be emailed to you 24 hours after it is processed by

Canada Post. After Sunday, August 9th the cost will be $13.50 and will have no guarantee of delivery in time

for the first week of school.

We are also pleased to offer Mabel's Labels to Stoney Creek families this

year. Mabel's Labels is the leading company for any labels you need for your

children at school, daycare, and pre-school. They are also great for sports

equipment. They make labels for clothing, shoes, bags, lunch containers or

more. Fully customizable, they stay on well and last for ages.

Click here and then choose the "Support a Fundraiser" option along the top menu and search for Stoney Creek

Community School (Burnaby). This is an ongoing fundraiser and is open for your orders now.

If you prefer to purchase your school supplies yourself, please see the supply lists posted on our

website. Click here for:

After 34 years of teaching at various schools, Ms. Hope is retiring at the end of June 2020. She has touched many lives, both students and staff and will be missed by all! She is planning on having a well-deserved rest, volunteering, trav-elling. and of course, biking.

We wish you all the best in this next chapter, Ms. Hope!
