Note On RhythmThis song had a very unusual rhythmic accompaniment that was a novelty at the time but didn't seem to catch on generally. So although I have written this as a simple 4 beat timing (which it is) we can imitate the original idea by using the following pattern:-
A / RD RD E7/ RD RD in hand movements this is DD Ru Ru
You can achieve this by making a single false downstrum after the first 2 beats and then completing the last 2 beats both in upstrums. Easier to demonstrate than to write down!
Most of the song is best strummed in a fairly simple pattern but you may find yourself using a straight shuffle (Du Du Du Du) here and there. The last E7 in the chorus should be 2 simple downstums.

Playing Notes
When learning this song it is helpful to treat it as 2/4 time. Exceptions
to this 2-beat approach are indicated by the strike marks that I have
inserted.
Once you have learnt the song you can use a relaxed rhythm. A
strumming pattern that suits this song is D Du D D i.e. 1 2& 3 4 but there
will be parts of the song where you will want to vary this.
The only chord in the song which is new to you is Bm7 (also known as
D6). You will see that this is always after the D chord, so the easiest
way to play it is to keep hold of the D and to roll your 3rd finger down
onto the 2nd fret of the A-string, thereby fingering all 4 strings on the
2nd frets.

See notes at the end of the song sheet.

Note 1: With the D7 Alt chord, you can take your 2nd finger on and off, so that you alternate between D7 and Am. it sounds like a sus-chord effect. Try it in other songs where you use D7(alt).
Note 2: I have coloured Em7 blue in a couple of places. Here it is best to finger it with the 2nd and third fingers, as it is then dead easy to play the Em6 that follows it.
