Greetings ISC,

Welcome to the month of September!

Every September ISC is involved in two very important and

meaningful community service projects. Caracasbaai Cleanup

was mentioned last week and will run again this week in the

newsletter. The other is in support of Prinses Wilhelmina Fonds

Curaçao (PWF), a foundation that was first established in 1949 to

support cancer patients on the island.

PWF has officially kicked off their month of awareness and col-

lecting of funds across the island by putting out a press release in

the Amigoe (Sept. 1st issue) and Antilliaans Dagblad (Sept. 2nd

issue). The two students in the release are our very own Andrea

Capriles and Maxine Russel; high school students are already

active in supporting the cause!

ISC wraps up the month of collecting with a school-wide bake

sale (mark your calendar!) on the 25th. All proceeds collected

from the bake sale and collection boxes are handed over to PWF

during our U.N. Day celebration in October.

Please click on their logo to the right to visit their Facebook page

and learn more. In addition, Ms. Sini has provided a short write-

up on page 4 regarding the details of ISC’s efforts. It is also im-

portant to note that she has been the driving force behind our in-

volvement with PWF for years. Hats off to you Ms. Sini!

Make the day great!

It is a matter of great pride for ISC to continue cleaning up the Cara-

casbaai area each year. This tradition is a 21 year old one and we

value our ability to do something for our island home. Students, their

parents and teachers come together, bright and early, to spend some

time outdoors as they focus on getting rid of trash, sort out recycla-

bles and burn some calories in a relaxed atmosphere. The grade 12

students are given the responsibility of organizing this event to en-

courage them to take the initiative and lead by example. Their CAS

learning experience is closely supervised by their IB & CAS Coordi-

nator. We invite parents and students from grade 3 onwards, to sign

up in their respective homerooms before Thursday, September 4,

2015. Permission slips will soon follow and these must be handed in

on time for a student to be permitted to participate on Saturday, Sep-

tember 19, 2015. Hope to see you there!

Prinses Wilhelmina Fonds Curacao (PWF) ISC has been a proud and loyal supporter of the PWF organization in Curacao for more than 17

years. This commitment to serve the island's cancer survivors involves the entire ISC commu-

nity in one way or another. Collecting and fundraising for this cause are the highlights of the

month of September. Students in High school team up with K4 to walk around classrooms to

collect spare change while Middle School and High School students also volunteer their

time during the weekends to collect money at supermarkets. Adults support this cause in and

out of ISC as well.

Sincerely,

Ms. Sini Right: High School and K4 students

Dear ISC Community,

As we head into our 4th week of school, I would like to bring awareness to a medical problem that has a tendency to im-

pact schools usually this time of year when we reconvene for classes: Head Lice.

News on the head lice front:

According to Nitpickers (an education and advisory service for families and schools in Australia):

‘When a person goes to the dentist and has no cavities, it doesn’t mean tooth brushing stops…same

when a person is deemed clear of head lice, it doesn’t mean the screening should stop. Regular combing

should become part of everyone’s weekly routine.’

Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. Head lice can be controlled but it

takes a systematic approach. By checking and combing your child’s head for lice or eggs every week, you will hopefully

be able to find a molehill before it’s a mountain!

Because of their small size and color that often camouflages with our hair and scalp, lice and eggs can be difficult to

spot. Here’s an effective way to screen for lice at home:

Step1 Comb inexpensive hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair.

This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around;

Step 2 Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue;

Step 3 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs;

Step 4 If lice or eggs are found, the child should be treated;

Step 5 If the child has been treated recently and only hatched eggs are found,

you may not have to treat since the eggs could be from the old infection.

If your child has head lice – tell anyone who has had head to head contact with

them. For more detailed information, tips on how to check for lice or how to treat

an infestation, feel free to contact me.

For a healthy school,

I AM ISC Exemplar: Nakhari Alberto, Grade 10 Maaike Brijker is one of our new High School students this school year. Maaike comes from

Utrecht, Netherlands and she is happy to have Nakhari as one of her classmates. Why?

"Nakhari was the first girl I saw on my first school day and she said without hesitating that she

could stay with me and help me during the school day." Maaike continues reporting that

"Nakhari told me to sit next to her in every class, even though that meant that she could not sit

next to her friends." During these weeks Nakhari has helped Maaike settle and adapt to ISC,

our school system and routines. Nakhari has exemplified many of our I Am ISC pillars by be-

ing thoughtful, helpful, and caring. Congratulations Nakhari for being ISC!

ISC Language Institute News Dear ISC Parents and Guardians,

ISC proudly presents the ISC Language Institute— our

language program for the Curacao community.

ISC Language Institute offers classes of English, Dutch,

Mandarin, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Papia-

mentu for participants interested in improving their knowl-

edge of a language that they already speak or for those par-

ticipants interested in learning a new language.

ISC Language Institute courses are scheduled twice per

week, Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and

Thursdays, in the evenings, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

ISC Language Institute’s program is designed to focus on

all aspects of communication using a semi-immersion ap-

proach where participants are exposed to the language since

the first day, which develops their need for communication

faster and makes them proficient in a shorter time.

ISC Language Institute is celebrating its fourth year of

success and the program is being recognized all over the

island for its professional standards and commitment to its

participants.

ISC Language Institute also offers an English class in the

mornings, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:15-10:15 AM, espe-

cially designed for ISC parents, which provides the tools to

enhance effective communication in English in the setting

of the school. This is a great opportunity to network with

other parents and to improve your communicative skills in

the language of instruction of our school.

If you are interested in the language classes, please visit its

website at www.languageinstitute.isc.cw or send an email

to [email protected] for further details about this

program.

New language classes are scheduled to start on October 19

& 20.

Caribbean 12 and Under Team Tennis Championship 2015

This past week Curaçao hosted the Caribbean region’s under 12 team tennis

tournament. From August 23rd-29th boys and girls teams from Antigua,

Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Guyana, Jamaica, the U.S. Virgin Is-

lands, St. Lucia, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago battled hard to reach the

next level of international competition. ISC’s own Gianluca Beaujon, Jazmin

Sandstrom, and Gibelle Beaujon represented Curaçao in the tournament.

Gibelle and Jazmin teamed up for Curaçao’s Team B and placed 6th overall in

the girls’ division. Gianluca partnered with Noah Martis from Radulphus Col-

lege, represented Curaçao’s Team A and won the tournament in the boys’ divi-

sion. Congratulations to all of the competitors!

The top 3 teams from each division qualified for the Latin American Tourna-

ment hosted by Mexico later in November. Good luck to Gianluca and Noah

who will represent our island at the next stage of competition!
