Dedication

C . P. "MOSE" NEIS

Field Kindley will lose someone special as this school year comes to an end. That someone special is C. P. Neis, or "Mose," as has long been his epithet. Mr. Neis will retire this June after having served 33 years as a high school instructor.

Mr. Neis has taught Government both in summer school and the regular term. He has also been Field Kindley's athletic director since the early 1930's .

With his classes, "Mose" has instilled a spirit of eagerness to learn more about our treasured republic and how our government sustains it. The perserverence with which he has taught

4

has allowed each of his students to develop a respectful pride for our city, state and nation .

As athletic director, Mr. Neis has raised Coffeyville to championship heights, not in just one sport, but in all. Field Kindley has retained an "A" rating for attitude of crowd, attitude of players, attitude of coaches, attitude of school officials, and for facilities in sporting affairs due mainly to the efforts of Mr. Neis.

Therefore, to you, Charles Peter Neis, the class of 1963 dedicates this TWISTER.

Thank you for a job well done l

Look Forward to Education for All

Clark Hendrix Principal

Helen Cole High School Secretary

Viola Thompson Trade School Secretary

Students at Field Kindley High School have the opportunity to select from a wide variety of courses that only a comprehensive high school can offer. Over sixty units are offered in a wide variety of sujects, including vocational courses at McFarland Trade School. Fifty-five to sixty per cent of Field Kindley graduates go to college. This compares favorably with the nation as a whole, which is thirty per cent, and with Kansas, which is forty per cent .

Field Kindley's versatile and well-trained faculty members constantly try to improve their own education in order to promote the better education of their students.

There are many master's degrees among the faculty members, and each summer various teachers do graduate work and attend seminars and special courses throughout the country.

Many teachers travel extensively during the summer . Last summer members of the faculty toured foreign countries as well as many states of the United States. By traveling during their vacations, the teachers aid their students with a first-hand knowledge of foreign countries and their own United States.

Erzglish Department Looks Forward to

Better Communications

The English Department assumes as one of its responsibilities helping students learn to express themselves as ably and confidently as possible in their native tonguE.!, whether they plan to enter college following high school or go directly into their life's work.-Itfurthertries to give them an appreciation of good writing and of the people who have written so that others may find pleasure and information in reading. It hopes to give its students criteria for selecting and judging the worth-while offerings of newspapers, magazines, books, and radio and television. By attempting to accomplish the goals, the department hopes to help make the life of each of its students happier and more successful.

Home Economics Looks to Future Home Making

In this modern world, most people rely on products made by technological devices to produce their goods. The home economics department supplies the learning so that each student can learn to rely on himself in the areas of foods and clothing.

In clothing classes, the girls learn to make their wearing apparel at an inexpensive cost.

Girls learn the art of cooking in the foods classes. (Probably they have also learned the way to a man's heart is through his stomach.)

Vocational Arts Looks to Skill Learning

To teach a marketable skill is the aim of the vocational arts department. The trade school offers a great opportunity to high school and some college students who want to leave school prepared. There are seven teachers in the day school program and there are two Coffeyville Industry men who help teach at nights. They offer beginning and advanced drafting, art, electricity and electronics. Classes open to college are Voc. Auto Mechanics, Voc. Machine shop and Mechanical Technology design of production and electronics Tech.

Music Department Looks to a World qf Song

Field Kindley's music department is one of which we may be quite proud. Mr. Bass does a wonderful job directing the choirs and the Madrigals . Mr. Lewis heads the instrumental aspect of the department. We have all witnessed the capability of the Band and the Swingsters; and the Drum Corps is the best in this area.

Physical Education Looks To Individual Needs

Field Kindley's physical education program shows the concern of the educators and leaders of our community and nation in the well-being of our youth.

Perhaps more than anything else, it teaches one to take care of his body. It acquaints one with recreational opportunities in and out of school.

Looks To The Creative

Through art, the God-instilled creative urge is developed and refined. One learns to think abstractly, to excite the intellect, and to reason properly by attuning ones feelings, intuitions and imagination.

Class of'64 Looks to Senior Year

A total of 320 students who survived the tenth grade (give or take dropouts and new arrivals since the first of the year) have assisted in many activities at Field Kindley.

The junior activity which demanded the most of every member of the class was the prom. Other projects included the play, Kavalkade, music, sports, debate, journalism, and intramurals.

Many organizations relied heavily upon juniors for membership and for committee assignments.

With their activities completed, the class looks forward to next year and the many opportunities as seniors.

Looks to Upper Years

Bewildered by the new environment but determined to make the most of the high school and its opportunities, 333 sophomores enrolled at Field Kindley this year. Without exception, they looked forward to the day when they would be "upper classmen. "

While serving their apprenticeships as sophomores, they carried their share of responsibility in the class room, on the field, in extracurricular activities and in organizations.

The accomplishments of the Gale are symbo lie of the enthusiasm of the class in general.

The 29th year of Drum Corps, beginning in June, started a year of wonderful memories.

The corps' appearances began during the summer with the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo. During school they performed half-time drills for both football and basketball.

"Our Family Tree" was the theme of this year's annual reunion banquet at which time the present drum major, Carolyn Merrill, relinquished the baton for 1963-64 to Marsha Smith.

This has been a very worthwhile year for the girls in Drum Corps. They will always remember the fears, tears, and cheers they shared in the ol' D.C.

Ten of the trophies were accounted for by the experienced debaters. Shortly after the season began, the TONGUESTERS placed second at Bishop Miege and then won fourth and third places at Ark City and the Muskogee "Little Nationals, " respectively. Toward the end of the regular season, Field Kindley placed fourth at the Pittsburg cross-exam, third at Wichita East, and fourth at the Emporia "To urnament of Silver and Roses" .

For the first time in many a year, Coffeyville qualified for the State debate tourney held at Wichita University by taking second in the district meet. At the district, CHS also won the SEK cham pionship for its efforts .

Coffeyville placed ninth in the State which is better than it has done in many a year.

Looks To Athletic

Participation For All

The intramural program at Field Kindley, supervised by Miss Hall and Mr. Crandell, strives to give every student an opportunity to participate in athletics regardless of his skill or ability.

The program is in its second year, and its evidence of success can be estimated by the number of boys and girls participating: bowling, 130; basketball, 85; tennis, 16; ping pong, 20; tumbling, 16; and golf, 10. Girls participate in all these except golf.

Students, through this program, are encouraged to express themselves, maintain their bodies physically, and to develop new friendships.
