(hypothetical) human factors remodel
DESCRIPTION
I made this project for my 2013 Human Factors class. Basically, we were assigned to redesign some executive offices based on ergonomic principles. I went all SIMS on it and actually remodeled every part of said offices. I love it, had so much working on it, and ended up getting an A!TRANSCRIPT

WELLSFARGOThe (Hypothetical) Problem
Wells Fargo executives are being negatively affected by their current offices. They are increasingly reporting aches and pains
due to the location of both important areas in the office and the tools inside their stations.
Wells Fargo has also noticed a slight increase in absenteeism and work-from-home requests because employees “don’t feel as though the current work environment helps them manage stress or become inspired and productive.”
![Page 3: (Hypothetical) Human Factors Remodel](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062514/559229821a28ab9d698b47d7/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
WELLSFARGOThe Solution
Redesign their environment so it is more ergonomically friendly.
The new office suite should be comfortable enough for employees to 1) enjoy/look forward to working there; 2) become more productive; 3) reduce/manage any stress; and 4) avoid injury. It should also better blend their work lives and off-work
comforts.
Ergonomics principles, such as those explained by the University of Utah Environmental Health & Safety Department, the Mayo Clinic, and our class lectures on Workspace Design, were used to help guide the direction of this redesign.
(I created the renderings presented here using The Sims 3.)

WELLSFARGOIntroduction
The workspace and the “everything else” space are located on different floors.
The back features a patio/terrace with a grassy area (and an optional pond).
A significant portion of the executives’ office walls is made of glass to make them feel like they cannot hide (so they don’t think of ruining the
economy again*) while providing a more open work atmosphere.
(The Sims 3 does not have a few of the objects I’ll discuss, but I’ll nevertheless introduce them because they apply to my plan.)

Re: ALL Office Chairs, Desks & Phones in The Suite
All office chairs and desks are height-adjustable.
All desks are also located perpendicular to the outside window in the room so as to avoid any glare. These windows may become frosted with a switch if necessary.
Each station has a phone* within easy reach that can be swapped for a headset if needed (i.e., if the person will be frequently talking on the phone and typing at the same time).
* All the phones in these renderings appear on the left side of the desk because the program didn’t allow me to place them elsewhere for some reason.

The monitors are directly in front of the employee (at/below eye level), about an arm’s length away. They can also be height-adjusted to accommodate this position.
There are also gel-type wrists rests near each employee’s keyboard.

WELLSFARGOThe lobby/waiting area resembles a living
room: The couches and comfy chairs were grouped in a way that enables communication. I made it grand to fit multiple guests at a
time (e.g., from vendors such as a team from a marketing agency).
I also added a coffee station by the receptionist's desk so he/she can more easily accommodate these guests.
The printing station* on the first floor is within easy access of the interns’ station (discussed later) and a short walk away from the receptionist’s desk.
* This station is in the form of a floor cabinet behind the staircase in the previous image. This version of The Sims doesn’t carry a printer, so it’s “imaginary” in these renderings .

WELLSFARGO
I turned a glass bookcase into a sort of room divider to partially separate the interns’ station (which also has two comfy chairs in case they ever need to kick back nearby) from the rest of the vast first floor.
That glass bookcase also helps maintain some privacy while letting light in from that side of the room. It was also placed in such a way as to enable easy
access to the women’s downstairs bathrooms. And in case of emergency, it does not block
anyone from accessing that part of the office.

WELLSFARGO
I also created the rest/conversation areas throughout that first floor in case any of the execs ever needed to divide themselves up in teams to brainstorm or execute other projects outside of their offices.
These areas also let employees break up their daily routines, free up any tension on their bodies, and change positions by having them walk to them and relax/talk in them.

WELLSFARGO
Staircases & Bathroom Stalls In the case of an emergency, there are two
staircases (instead of just one) on opposite sides of the complex for easier access. This also makes it more convenient for employees
and any guests they have to direct as it enables them to walk shorter distances to get to the most important areas.
There are four bathrooms total: On the 1st floor there is one for women and one for
men; each has three stalls and three sinks. On the 2nd floor there are two single full bathrooms
(one for women and another for men) with showers in case any employee ever needs to pull an all-nighter.

The repetition associated with daily routines and holding the same posture for a long time leads to stress, discomfort, and potential injuries!Hence the need for these areas:
Along with the conversation areas located throughout, they’d allow employees to break up the monotony of their day and become inspired.

The Entertainment Room features a TV and a game console for when employees need a break or to take a naps (on any of the two couches, which may also be folded out in case someone needs to work all night).
The Kitchen is worthy of office parties as it has enough room for employees and guests. It also features the essential appliances found at traditional offices plus a stove if they ever want to make a hot meal from scratch.
The Patio's meant to be a sort of "oasis" for when execs need to relax and get a breath of fresh air. It has a BBQ grill, a picnic table, and a pond* surrounded by two benches.
* The pond is optional for when the offices are not on ground level. (However, Cathy Spelling built an indoor pool in her LA penthouse, so having a pond on a higher floor is technically not impossible .)

The desks are perpendicular to the window to minimize glare, though execs may flip a switch to frost their windows if necessary.
Execs’ most important/frequently used tools are within easy reach so no extreme postures are ever necessary.
The two largest offices have wall-mounted screens. The supervisor's/CEO’s office also has a small conference area in case he ever needs to have a more intimate meeting with a small number of people.
Most walls are made of glass so executives feel like they are being supervised (i.e., they cannot hide) and will be held accountable.
