Smoking Cessation with Hypnosis

Smoking Cessation is one of the most common topics addressed in

hypnotherapy today and probably one of the most effective.

Smoking cessation with hypnosis has a higher success ratio than any of

the physical means available on the market today if done properly, such as

the gums, pills and patches. The reason for this is that you are dealing with

the strong “subconscious mind” where permanent changes are made

whereas with all the “physical” products or programs available you are just

dealing with the conscious mind which as we know is very rebellious,

driven by habit and negative in nature.

Tobacco is the Number #1 greatest preventable cause of disease and

premature death in America today.

1 in 10 adults -- more than five million per year -- dies from tobacco-related

illnesses [source: World Health Organization]

According to the American Heart Association, in 2008 an estimated 24.8

million men and 21.1 million women, 23.1 percent and 18.3 percent of the

total population, respectively, were smokers [source: American Heart

Association].

The average success rate for a first attempt to cease the use of tobacco

is 6%

(Source: The American Cancer Society).

24% of America's adult population and 14% of America's teens use

tobacco.

Some Reasons Why People Start Smoking

Peer Pressure – to fit in

Young people rely most heavily on friends of the same age for social support and affirmation.

If a child in a social circle starts experimenting with tobacco, it's all too easy for him or her to lead peers into smoking as well -- the smoker doesn't want to be alone, and the not-yet-smokers don't want to be seen as afraid to try something risky or boundary-pushing.

Risk-taking Behavior

For some young people, smoking provides fertile ground for getting that limit-pushing thrill. Since it's illegal in many countries for minors to purchase tobacco, the process of obtaining, learning to use and eventually smoking tobacco is full of broken rules from the first step.

Stress Relief

In a high-pressure job people may start to smoke as a way to manage the tension and nerves associated with the situation. Unfortunately, these people may find that they can't easily give up tobacco once the stress passes. The tobacco becomes a psychological -- as well as chemical -- crutch, as any potentially stressful situation sends them instinctively reaching for a cigarette.

Advertising

Research has suggested that, worldwide, tobacco advertising plays a role in the number of people who start or stop smoking.

Media Influences

Like advertising, media can exert a significant influence on viewers' decision-making. One only has to look at how hairstyles or clothing fashions can be launched by a single movie or TV episode to see the extent of this power in many parts of the world.

Smoking in the media can have the same influence as fashion or the appearance of a trendy gadget in an actor's hand. Studies have suggested that when young viewers see a main character smoking, they're more likely to see smoking as something socially acceptable, stylish and desirable.

Parental Influence

The relationship between parents smoking and their children smoking is obvious: Children of active smokers are more likely to start smoking than children of nonsmokers, or children of parents who quit smoking.

Weight Control

Some people smoke to control their weight. Smokers, on the average, weigh seven pounds less than non-smokers. Smoking reduces a person’s appetite. It lessens his/her sense of taste and smell. This could be why ex-smokers gain weight after quitting cigarettes. Food tastes and smells so much better.

To Look and be Cool

If their friends or peers smoke, they may feel pressured into doing the same to be accepted. Most teenagers think that smoking is ‘cool’ and a fun thing to do.

To feel Relaxed

This occurs in mostly adults. They may have a lot of stress and pressures because of economic and personal problems. They may be unemployed or working but not making enough money to take care of themselves and their families.

To Think Properly

There was a research which showed that people smoke so that they can think properly. It may not seem to make much sense, but smoking helps to shut off distractions which make the mind think better.

It seems Glamorous

This is a reason that comes up occasionally with elderly people who

smoked most of their lives. In their youth famous movie actresses were

often seen living the high life smoking with the long cigarette holders and

made it look glamorous.

Some Reasons Why People Decide To Quit Smoking

Every smoker has his or her own personal reasons for quitting. Here are

some common reasons. Think about what is most important to you.

For Health

According to the Surgeon General, quitting smoking is the single most

important step a smoker can take to improve the length and quality of her

or her life. As soon as you quit, your body begins to repair the damage

caused by smoking.

To Save Money - A pack of cigarettes can cost upwards to $10.00. Many

smoke a pack and a half to two packs a day. Do the math!

To Save the Aggravation - It's getting less convenient to smoke. Most

states have passed clean indoor air laws that make it illegal to smoke in

bars, restaurants, and other public places. In can be inconvenient having to

go outside many times a day in the cold or rain to have a cigarette.

It's good for the People around You - Cigarette smoke is harmful to

everyone who inhales it, not just the smoker. Second-hand smoke is

dangerous and can make you sick.

For your Children - Children who live with smokers get more chest colds

and ear infections while babies born to mothers who smoke have an

increased risk of premature delivery, low birth weight and sudden infant

death syndrome.

Both You and the People in your Life will Breathe Easier - Better

breathing can mean better sleep at your house.

Alleviate Snoring - Not only are smokers more likely to snore, so are non-

smokers who breathe secondhand smoke on a daily basis.

Food Tastes Better when you quit - Smoking interferes with your sense of

taste.

Your Sense of Smell also Improves – You’ll notice the smells and

fragrances of flowers, foods and your surroundings so much more.

You Smell Better - You don’t have to worry about the stale smell on your

clothes, hair, and breath.

You Look Better - Prevent yellow stains on your teeth, beard, fingers and

fingernails. You can stop the premature aging of your skin.

Tips to Stay Smoke Free

Avoid triggers that make you want to smoke such as being around

smokers, stress, and caffeine.

Eliminate the smoking behavior,

Start healthy eating, and exercising to prevent weight gain.

Replace with water and not Twinkies

Stay positive and focused. List reasons your glad you quit.

What Ingredients In Tobacco Smoke Is Harmful?

Cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco are made from dried tobacco leaves,

and ingredients are added for flavor and to make smoking more pleasant.

The smoke from these products is a complex mixture of chemicals

produced by the burning of tobacco and its additives.

Some of the most notable chemicals found in tobacco smoke include:

Carbon monoxide – found in car exhaust Nicotine - found in bug sprays Tar - material to make roads Arsenic - rat poison Ammonia - found in cleaning products Cyanide – a deadly poison Acetone - found in nail polish remover Butane - cigarette lighter fluid DDT - insecticides Formaldehyde - to preserve dead bodies Sulfuric acid - car batteries Cadmium - used to recharge batteries Freon - damages earth's ozone layer Methoprene - a pesticide Maltitol - a sweetener not permitted to be used in foods in the U.S.

The previous information is just part of a list of 599 additional

chemicals/ingredients that was submitted by the five major American

cigarette companies to the Dept. of Health and Human Services in April of

1994, this list of ingredients had long been kept a secret.

Tobacco companies reporting this information were:

1. American Tobacco Company

2. Brown and Williamson

3. Liggett Group, Inc.

4. Philip Morris Inc.

5. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company

While there are 599 ingredients in cigarettes, burning the cigarette releases

about 4000 chemical compounds. SIXTY-NINE of those chemicals are

known to cause cancer.

HYPNOSIS SESSION CHECKLIST

__ Meet & Greet

It’s important to make your client feel comfortable from the very first moment they

meet you. Be sure to smile.

__ Common Ground

Begin Intake Form: once a comfortable he seated begin asking the questions on

the top part of the intake form. These questions are basic questions about the

client which will help them to relax. Everyone loves speaking about themselves

so be sure to focus the conversation on them.

Describe the British Guard Scenario which is in the Hypnosis Manual.

__ Suggestibility Test

Conduct several suggestibility tests.

Explain - be sure to explain the results of the test to them so they don't think this

is some sort of comedy show. Explain where they are on the chart i.e. analytical

or non-analytical and how you can tailor the session to their specific makeup.

__ Finish Intake Form

Questions - by now the client will be more comfortable with you and you can

finish the intake sheet and ask more in depth questions.

(The purpose of the top part of this form is to find your clients commitment to quit smoking as well as

their reason to quit. If their commitment level is below seven there's a strong chance that they are not

Helping your client to raise their psychological commitment level

Group Hypnosis Presentation Checklist

works. You may want to conduct a couple suggestibility tests with the group

as a way to show what can be done, to amaze them and build expectancy.

My favorites are to conduct the following ones

my eye on the audience to see who reacts the best. I choose the most

suggestible person I see and invite them to come forward to the front of the

room and then conduct a …

time I have done this, they are ready for the session. Expectancy is high!

Finger Gun - Opener

Here is something I learnt many years ago from a fellow Hypnotherapist

/ entertainer that you can use at the beginning of your presentation that has

always worked very well for me.

Everything you say once as you begin this process should be said

quickly. You should make the hand motions at the same precise time that

you state the command. (The timing is imperative for this to work

successfully!) The idea is to get your audience following your instructions

very quickly, not giving them enough time to react properly. They will

eventually be doing what you are doing and not what you are saying

anymore as they are having a hard time keeping up with you.

Usually within the first five minutes of my presentation I will say

something like “Let me give you a demonstration of what hypnosis is like:

What I’d like you all to do right now is to sit up straight in your chairs and

try to follow my instructions, do exactly as I say as quickly as you can

without thinking …

(Now speed up your pace!)

“Raise your right hand up in the air and wiggle your fingers, make a circle,

make a gun, make another circle, look at your circle, look at my circle, put

the circle on your chin!”

(At the instant that you say put the circle on your chin, place your circle

directly on your cheek instead. You’ll find that almost all of your audience

will also place their hands on their cheeks rather than on their chin as you

said … At that point you simply would smile and reply…)

“Folks your chin is down here!” (Pointing at your chin.)

This always brings the house down with everyone laughing. You can

then go on to explain how they were all in a state of hypnosis in those few

Follow-up Session – Theater of the Imagination

(To be used daily between your live session for at least 30 days)

Before you begin listening to this session be sure that you give yourself

enough uninterrupted time to sit and listen to it quietly for at least ¾ of an

hour.

This session is designed to be listened to while relaxing.

Do not listen to it while driving a motor vehicle or doing anything else

that may be dangerous.

Now turn off any beepers or phones, including cell phones.

Put any pets outside of the room that you are being hypnotized in, as

they may jump on your lap and disturb you during your session.

Now sit in a comfortable, out of the way seat, supporting your neck and

back preferably.

Be sure that there is nothing else in the area that may disturb you during

your session.

NOTE: One of the greatest benefits of this program is that it will work just

as successfully whether you go into a deep hypnosis, a light hypnosis or if

you don’t even go into hypnosis at all. The main purpose of the sessions is

the utilization of your imagination as a means to create new memories

because the subconscious mind cannot differentiate between an imagine

memory or an actual memory. Therefore whether you go into hypnosis to

imagine the scenes or simply listen to the instructions and imagine or think

about the scenes, the same purpose is being accomplished.

Theater of the Imagination

Close your eyes and relax. Take a deep breath … and exhale … and

take a second deep breath … and exhale and on your third deep breath,

hold it for about three seconds … and exhale and relax.

I’m going to have you relax, every part of your body starting from the top

of your head all the way down to the bottom of your feet ... and as you relax

each part of your body, I’d like you to use your imagination to visualize …

and even feel … each part of your body relax and let go completely …

starting with the top of your head … your scalp and your forehead … your

eyebrows and your eyelids … and feel that relaxation going down through

your cheeks and your nose … relax your mouth and especially all those

muscles around your mouth and lips … make sure your teeth are not

clenched together … and just relax … relax your chin and your jaw … and

allow all of those muscles in your face to just let go … and your neck

relaxes … starting with the front part of your neck … and the back part of

your neck … all the way down to your shoulders … just feel your shoulders

relax completely … get rid of any tension that might be in your shoulder

area … it should feel good to do that … and your arms relax … starting with

your upper arms … going down to your elbows … relax your wrists … your

hands … and even your fingers relax and let go … and notice how deep

and regular your breathing has become … just so much more than just a

few moments ago, when we began … feel your breathing … feel the

rhythm of your breathing … notice the contraction and expansion of your

diaphragm and your chest … and allow your chest muscles to relax

completely … all the way down to your stomach … just feel your stomach

muscles relaxing and letting go … get rid of any tension that might be in

that area … just allow everything to let go completely … and your back

muscles relax … those larger muscles in the upper part of your back …

going down your spinal column … and into your lower back … and allow all

those smaller muscles in the lower part of your back to relax as well … and

your hips relax … and especially your legs … starting with your thighs …

your knees … and feel that relaxation going down into your calves … and

your ankles … relax your feet … and even your toes just relax completely

… as you begin to drift into a deep relaxed state … just letting yourself go

… letting your mind and body become one … just feeling so good …

(Deepener)

In just a moment I’m going to count from 20 down to 1 ... And as I say

each number I’d like you to imagine the number, think about it and quietly

spell the number to yourself which will help you to deepen your own

relaxation allowing you to relax at your own pace.

So let’s begin with 20 as you spell it … t-w-e-n-t-y … 19 … n-i-n-e-t-e-e-

n ... 18 ... All the way down deep … 17... 16 ... deeper and deeper … 15 …

keep on spelling the numbers to yourself quietly ... 14 ... just let yourself go

… 13 ... 12 ... give yourself the permission that this is what you want to do

…11 ... 10... allow yourself to just to let go … 9 ... 8 ... deeper and deeper

… 7 ... 6 ... all the way down deep … 5 ... 4 ... tired and drowsy … 3 ... 2 ...

so very relaxed … and finally …1 ... Deep … deep … relaxation.

(Imagination)

I would like you to use your imagination right now. Imagine, or just think

about, yourself sitting comfortably in front of a large movie screen and

imagine that you are seeing a motion picture of yourself. See it as vividly

and in as much detail as possible. See yourself in this motion picture

reacting successfully, in the ideal situation, having already have attained

your goal. As you are visualizing yourself as this successful person ... See

yourself as the main actor or lead person on your screen … how do you

“feel” now that you have become the person that you would like to be? …

(pause) … Feel the emotions … What would you be feeling? … What are

you feeling? Maybe confidence … pride … fulfillment … satisfaction …

are others maybe saying about you? How do they feel about your

you think is different … What is different now that you have attained your

any more freedoms associated with this attainment? … Think about them,

get them clearly in your mind as you imagine yourself standing in front of

you, on that motion picture screen … (pause) … See the details … What

are you wearing? … What are you doing? … What else is there that you

can notice that is associated with this now orderly achievement? … (pause)

… See yourself for just a few more moments having achieved your new

You are in control of your life now … You have created and attained a

new positive habit … With the power of your subconscious mind, it is very

easy to do … You have allowed the past disorder to fade away like an

unwanted memory … and now you move forward … The disorder of the

past has been replaced with order. So once again feel that wonderful

sense of satisfaction and achievement. It is coming from your strong

subconscious mind. You have created your goal and through these daily

exercises maintaining it, creating a permanent habit of change.
