API 611 5th Edition General Purpose Steam Turbines

Comments, Clarifications & Exceptions

Elliott Group Opportunity: JED‐15‐017 Rev: 13A Page 14 of 41

PARAGRAPH REMARK

5.1 EXCEPTION: Fasteners will be in the USC system of measurement.

6.1.6 CLARIFICATION: In the event an immediate start-up is required, the Purchaser must consult with Elliott concerning warm-up and proper draining.

6.3.8 EXCEPTION: Because of space restrictions, the spot face for hold down bolts shall be approx. 1.75 times the bolt hole diameter. The typical clearance around the bolt is 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) diameter.

6.3.16 EXCEPTION: Cap screws are used for main casing joints due to spacing limitation for the proposed turbine and for the ease of assembly.

6.7.2.3 COMMENT: Elliott will determine the electrical and mechanical runout in the shaft. Elliott will make three attempts to attain the allowed peak-to-peak amplitude; however, the acceptance standard is 0.5 mil maximum if the allowed peak-to-peak amplitude cannot be attained after three attempts.

6.8.7 COMMENT: Packing cases will be designed for 300% of the calculated leakage when possible, however, this cannot always be achieved when labyrinth seals are used due to space restriction.

6.9.4.1 EXCEPTION: Elliott does not individually dynamic balance each component before assembly.

6.10.1.9 EXCEPTION: Small liner type radial bearings cannot be fitted with bearing metal temperature sensors installed in accordance API-670. One spring loaded temperature sensor per radial bearing is being supplied on the upper half of the bearing.

6.10.4.4.4 7.4.4.3.1

EXCEPTION: The steam end radial probe locations are not 90 degrees separated.

7.4.4.3.2 EXCEPTION: Elliott does not instrument liner type radial bearings in accordance with API 670.

8.3.3.1.h COMMENT: Elliott will use B-N NSV type probes for testing. These probes may not meet the linearity of API 670.

Comments, Clarifications & Exceptions

Elliott Group Opportunity: JED‐15‐017 Rev: 13A Page 26 of 41

EXCEPTION: The probes supplied by Elliott are Bently Nevada NSV type, and are not reverse mounted. The steam end radial probe locations are not 90 degrees separated.

7.4.4.3.2 EXCEPTION: Elliott does not instrument liner type radial bearings in accordance with API 670.

8.1.7 EXCEPTION: Elliott reserves the right to perform witnessed testing without a preliminary test.

8.3.3.2.a COMMENT: Speed increments of 10% are not realistic. The speed increments will be approximately 500-1000 rpm.

8.4.3.e EXCEPTION: The blank flange covers are not car sealed.

Blanket Insulation

Elliott Group Opportunity: JED‐15‐017 Page 33 of 41

Thermal Insulation Blanket The standard, removable, thermal insulation blankets for YR turbines are constructed with a reflective exterior jacket, 1" or 2" thermal insulation, liner and gusseting, and quilting pins/ hooks to reduce the surface temperature. Details of each component are as follows:

Jacketing: The exterior jacket is made from Alpha Style 2337-2-TA, which is an extremely flexible silicone rubber coated aluminized glass fabric. It is designed to be used as a thermal barrier fabric to shield from radiant heat sources as high as 6,000°F. The material has a 500°F continuous temperature rating for conductive and convected heat.

Insulation: The insulation is either 1" or 2" thick LEWCO mat, which is a 100% fiber glass mat composed of “E” glass fibers that are mechanically needled together without chemical binders, and has a 1,200°F maximum temperature rating. It is irrespirable, incombustible, asbestos free, and contains no resin or inorganic binders. It conforms to MIL-1-16411 type II, MIL-I-24244, USCG 164.009, ASTM E84 industry standards and NRC 1.36. (The 1" mat may be necessary in certain areas when space restricts the use of the 2" blanket.)

Liner & Gusseting: The inner surface liner and gusseting are made from Alpha Maritex style #2025 18 oz. fiberglass lagging fabric with a 304SS mesh sewn to the hot face. The SS mesh adds structural integrity to the cover and provides abrasion resistance. This fabric meets USCG specification for incombustible material #164.009, military specification MIL-I-24244, and is included in military specification MIL-C-0020079F (SH) type 1 class 9.

Quilting Pins/Hooks: The quilting pins and hooks are made from 304SS. They are used throughout the cover for closure, and to keep the insulation from migrating within the jacket.

Thermal & Acoustic Blanket A flexible noise barrier may be incorporated into the thermal blanket when required to meet noise specifications. The details of the noise barrier are as follows: Sound Barrier: The Sound Seal B-10NR mass loaded vinyl with a nominal weight of 1 lb. per square foot is used as a flexible noise barrier. One (1) layer of the barrier adds an additional 0.11 inches to the blanket thickness. Multiple layers of the barrier can be used when additional noise reduction is required.

Sound Control Policy

Elliott Group Opportunity: JED‐15‐017 Page 35 of 41

I. Scope Elliott Company recognizes the need for sound level control and the fact that rotating equipment can be a major source of

sound. Therefore, the object of this policy is to present the expected average sound level from the Elliott equipment, describe the environment and method of measurement upon which these levels are based, and discuss methods of sound control. This policy will pertain to all contracts involving a YR Steam Turbine, unless amended by a mutually satisfactory agreement.

II. Installation A. Environment: Acoustical performance is based on a sound pressure level which is dependent upon acoustical

characteristics of the space in which the unit operates. All measured sound levels are assumed to be in a hemispherical free field or semi-reverberant field which has a room constant large enough so as to not significantly affect sound pressure levels at the measuring point.

B. Background Sound: Background sound level is measured when the equipment is not running. Levels of ambient

sound must be determined so that their influence can be separated from the measured sound levels to obtain the equipment's true sound level. If the difference between the measured sound level and the background sound level is less than 3 dB in a given octave band, a valid equipment sound level in that band cannot be determined. When the difference is greater, the following correction factor should be subtracted from the measured sound level:

(Measured - Background) dB 3 4-5 6-9 10 & Over Correction - dB 3 2 1 0 III. Sound Measurement A. Equipment Operation: Any meaningful sound level measurement must take place at site while the equipment is

operating at rated power and speed with design steam conditions. The object is to determine equipment sound level that is representative of the normal operating performance and conditions, without throttling.

B. Associated Sound: The effect of the sound produced from the components associated with the system must be

eliminated to arrive at a true representation of the equipment sound level. Process steam piping and valves, if left untreated, are generally the predominant noise sources. Therefore, all steam lines including inlet, exhaust, drain and leakoff must be insulated with acoustical insulation. All driven machine process and drain lines must also be suitably insulated. It is the purchaser's responsibility to control the associated sound from the system and other sources to the extent that it does not affect accurate sound level readings of the Elliott equipment.

C. Measurement Locations: Microphone locations should be set up with all points one meter from a major surface of the

equipment and at a height of 1.5 meters above the floor. A minimum of six (6) measurement locations around the perimeter of the YR turbine is required, which is typically two (2) readings on each side and two (2) at the front (steam end). Additional measurement locations for the process and steam piping are considered measurements of piping sound level rather than equipment sound level.

IV. Equipment Sound Levels The following table lists the maximum sound pressure levels expected for normal design construction of Elliott's YR turbine,

based upon the above qualifications of the installation and sound measurement procedures with various available insulation packages:

(1) Reference 2x 10-5 N/m2 @ one meter. V. Special Sound Control A. Acoustical Treatment: Usually treatment of the piping will be adequate in meeting requirements such as OSHA limits.

If additional sound level reduction is required, acoustical treatment can be purchased for the equipment. This will normally be accomplished with removable, reusable insulation having an outer layer that is weather, oil and chemical resistant. Effective sound level reduction is highly dependent on good field installation that eliminates leakage paths.

B. Special Design: Due to the nature of sound generation inside steam turbines, it is economically impractical to

significantly reduce sound levels through special designs. Therefore, only standard and proven design equipment will be offered, and sound control will be limited to external acoustical treatment as discussed above.

VI. Policy A. Liability: Realizing that the control of sound is a function of the installation's environment and the layout and design of

the system, as well as the rotating equipment, Elliott Company will cooperate fully with the purchaser in attempting to meet the job requirements. However, since many of the determining factors of the sound level are beyond the design and control of Elliott, the Company's liability shall be limited to the supply of external acoustical treatment only for the rotating equipment Elliott has supplied and only for claims made during the normal warranty period.

B. Sound Level Surveys: If desired, sound measurements can be taken during normal equipment shop testing with the

understanding that nothing special will be incorporated into the test stand arrangements in an effort to reduce sound levels, and that the test will be done at no load with minimum steam flow which will normally result in lower noise levels. The data obtained for the unit will be without any external acoustical attenuation. Note that the results from the measurement of sound levels on Elliott's test stand during shop testing of the equipment cannot be considered accurate or meaningful because it is impossible to simulate the design conditions and installation configuration of the equipment. Also, the environment of the test stand is much different from the site environment.

CONTINUOUS STARTUP Conductivity - Micromhs/cm at 25oC Drum 0.3 1.0 Once through 0.2 0.5 SiO2 (ppb, max.) 20 50 Fe (ppb, max.) 20 50 Cu (ppb, max.) 3 10 Na + K (ppb, max.) up to 800 psig (5516 kPag) 20 20 801 to 1450 psig (5517 to 9998 kPag) 10 10 1451 to 2400 psig (9999 to 16548 kPag) 5 5 over 2400 psig (over 16548 kPag) 3 3 Chlorine (ppb, max.) 10 10-30

Notes: 1. TDS (total dissolved solids) 100 ppm, max. 2. Other contaminants should be advised by Purchaser and reviewed by Elliott on an individual basis. Steam Quality Guidelines: Turbine applications that operate on Dry & Saturated inlet steam conditions require special attention regarding moisture removal. The purchaser/purchaser’s engineer shall be responsible to coordinate the moisture removal requirements between the steam supply source and the turbine inlet connection. This may require a combination of special insulation, drain traps and a steam separator, depending on the site-specific physical piping layout. Elliott does not recommend using Dry & Saturated inlet steam above 400 psig.
