Brief Overview
RMS-DF-X is a family of Intercept andDF systems which allow the operatorto quickly scan the spectrum in order todetect, analyse and geolocalise emitters.RMS-DF-X can operate in automatic ormanual mode, from a local operatorstation or from remote.RMS-DF-X can be used as a stand-
AIRPORT - SHIELD utilises a minimum of 3 RMS-DF-X in orderto detect and geolocalise emitters in airports.

alone sensor or as part of a widergeolocalisation network. It can alsobe easily integrated into large radio monitoring systems as a wideband signal detection and DF unit.RMS-DF-X combines in the same systemmultiple geolocalisation techniquessuch as correlative interferometry(highly accurate and effective againstLow Probability of Intercept signals)
and TDOA (requires fewer receivers andworks well against wide band signals).RMS-DF-X simultaneously performsspectrum scanning while estimating the Directions of Arrival of all the detected signals; even the shortest emission is detected and geolocalised. This is a key factor in the geolocalisationof fast frequency hoppingcommunications.
System Architecture
RMS-DF-X has a real Software Defined Radio architecture, based on two main components: a software signal processing application called SMS (Spectrum Monitoring Suite) and a set of wideband digital receivers.Depending on the Customer’s requirements, the wideband digital receivers can be selected from a variety of models available on the market, each with different performance and cost. The only change required to integrate a new tuner is the development of its specific software driver. This flexibility allows the Customers to
have new radio monitoring capabilities using hardware acquired in the past.
Just by changing the type and the number of digital receivers, the User can reconfigure the system to fit his operational requirements. For example, it is possible to have:
• a wideband radio monitoring receiver with TDOA (one receiver)
• a dual channel, correlative interferometry, direction finder
with TDOA (two receivers)• a five channel, correlative
interferometry, direction finder with TDOA (five receivers)

• ITU-R compliant measurements
• All Over IP: remote control and
network centric operation
• Open architecture for integration
with third party software
and systems.
There can be different configurations of RMS-DF-X. In accordance with Italian/English law, the transfer, sale and export of some RMS-DF-X configurations may require LOG.IN to apply for an authorization and/or an export permit from the Italian/English Export Control Authorities.
System Capabilities:
SMS - SpectrumMonitoring Suite
SMS (Spectrum Monitoring Suite) is apure Software Defined Radio applicationdeveloped completely by LOG.IN and specifically designed for radio spectrum monitoring and surveillance. SMS can be successfully used in military, homeland security, spectrum management and interference detection applications, whenever it is necessary to detect, geolocalise, identify and analyse a radio emission.SMS’s operational workflow is dividedinto three phases:Survey: scanning of the RF spectrum, detection of signals and estimation
of the directions of arrival.Collection: extraction of the signalsof interest (called alarms) fromthe detected signals, recording of the signals’ parameters into the database.Analysis: demodulation, decodingand specific measurementsof the signals of interest.SMS provides an extensive list of detection criteria (Survey phase)and alarm criteria (Collection phase),reducing operator workload andincreasing system effectiveness.Because all the alarms are recorded into the system database, it is possibleto perform both on-line and off-linesignal analysis.SMS can be programmed to
automatically tune one or more hand-off receivers to specific alarms as well as transferring the alarm parametersto another SMS operator. This approach allows the setupof a radio monitoring network with operators having different roles(e.g. wide band analysis, narrow band analysis, communications transcription).SMS-NET is a software application which allows operators to connect multiple RMS-DF-X sensors and geolocalise emitters. The sensors can be connected via a wired or a wireless network. SMS-NET performs the geolocalisation by combining Directions of Arrival, Time of Arrival (TOA) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) inputs.
