ForewordAt Hurstville Museum & Gallery, we love bringing exhibitions from all across Australia to our Georges River locals. We’re excited to present The Many Story Treehouse Exhibition: Celebrating Terry Denton’s illustrations for the phenomenal Treehouse series by Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton, a Books Illustrated touring exhibition. Kids and adults alike will enjoy this in-depth look into the development of this popular series, and the fun and quirky illustrations created by Terry Denton.

With the 2020 Summer Olympics taking place this year, we’ve curated Striving for gold: Olympians of St George, which looks back at the personal stories of local Olympians, to understand the Games from their perspective. Come along to see Olympic memorabilia and get involved with a range of fun and interactive activities. We’ll also be holding family fun open days for our exhibitions, so swing by for drop in craft and guided tours on these special days.

If you have creative kids at home, bring them along to our Dragonflies Kids’ Club or Art Attack workshops. No matter what their skill level, if they’re interested in having fun, learning basic artistic techniques and having a go, they will love these programs. Over the next six months, we have everything from cartooning to cardboard city creations, making your own musical instrument to producing your own zines! There’s lots of fun to be had at Hurstville Museum & Gallery.

I hope to see you at one of our future events.

Hurstville Museum & Gallery tells the stories of individuals, groups and communities in the St George area from its earliest peoples to the present day, and highlights how life has changed over the years. To tell these stories, Hurstville Museum & Gallery aims to collect and preserve items related to the history and community of St George.

Over the past six months, the Museum & Gallery has taken the first steps towards increasing access to our collection by making images and information about selected objects available on eHive, an online collection management system. Members of the community can simply search for our collection and see some wonderful objects including a vintage pram, a Freezesi ice chest and many more.

We are hoping to grow our collection both physically and online over the coming year. If you would like to donate an item to the collection, please contact the Museum & Gallery. If you would like to donate an

8 February - 1 March 2020

Tranquil places to hang idyllwild is a series of mixed media paintings and sketches depicting a connection to land and spirit. Using instinctual mark-making in a process of abstraction, Robyn draws heavily on nature and the impact of humans on public spaces, creating a sense of quiet disquiet; listen to the wind, feel the land, smell the air and note our presence.

4 April - 3 May 2020

Soupsue’s work reacts to the remnants of Australian history and people that are imprinted on the local landscape. The audience is asked to reflect on the multitudes of layered lives that are interwoven in the emotional and physical landscape of Australia; wanting us to investigate what we remember, what we deny, what we have forgotten and what we leave behind.

For adultsReminiscing sessions

Reminiscence therapy is an activity that involves the elderly in the active recollection of life experiences. It allows individuals to relive positive personal events from their past in a way that is vivid and engaging and encourages them to communicate those experiences to a listener. Interaction with objects and images from the past aids the recollection of memories.

In a comfortable and relaxed forum, this special program has been designed to meet the needs of seniors, nursing homes, organised groups and day care centres. Under the guidance of Museum & Gallery staff, participants are encouraged to handle objects from the collection and share their memories of objects with other members of the group.

Cost: $3.50 per participant, with a minimum of 10 people. Carers are free. Refreshments are available for an additional $0.50 per person.

Each session runs for approximately one hour.

Reminiscence therapy kits

Hurstville Museum & Gallery’s reminiscence therapy kits are available for hire. This is a great way to bring the Museum & Gallery to your aged care facility.
