Since it began in 2002, Hurstville City Council’s Chinese New Year Festival has provided the community with an opportunity to discover the social, cultural and economic contributions made by the Chinese community. More than 40,000 people visit Hurstville each year to participate in the celebration, making it the largest of its kind outside the Sydney CBD. Hurstville City Museum & Gallery’s 2010 exhibition Chinese New Year: Hurstville Celebrates highlights photographs from past festivals; a testimony to how the festival has grown in eight years.

Delve into a decade of art noir painting in local artist Beric Henderson’s Dangerous Dreams exhibition. Be sure to join the free talks to get an insight into the artist’s creative process.

Hurstville City Library Museum & Gallery invites you to interact with the Web 2.0 world. Subscribe to RSS feeds to get the latest information on programs and events, submit comments on the LMG Blog, review and rate books using the catalogue.

And why not come along to the Council’s Harmony Movie Festival? The screening - of eight short films will promote respect, courage and understanding differences on Harmony Day 2010.

World War II was a period of dramatic change for the people of NSW. As the cry ‘There’s A War On’ rang out men, women and children came together to face an uncertain future. For some the war brought new opportunities, adventure, love, lasting friendships and exciting experiences. For others wartime meant loss and hardship, fear and uncertainty, or a term in a POW/internment camp as they were suddenly regarded not as friends or neighbours but as ‘enemy aliens’.

There’s A War On! World War II at Home is a Museums and Galleries NSW traveling exhibition. The exhibition showcases the varied experiences of the men, women and children who fought the war on the home front and includes precious World War II artifacts, memorabilia, photographs and video footage from around NSW.

Hurstville City Museum & Gallery will be creating its own special display focusing on how the St George community came together to support the war effort. This component will feature local stories and images which combined with the Museums and Galleries NSW exhibition will provide an insightful look into this important part of Australian history.

If you have any items you wish to donate, provide the Museum & Gallery for a short term loan or if you have any personal stories you think would be of interest please contact the Museum & Gallery on 9330 6444.

HARMONY DAY 2010Hurstville City Council will be celebrating Harmony Day for 2010 by screening eight short films that promote harmony, respect and understanding of differences. The films focus on the theme ‘Courage’ for its importance in confronting fear and standing up for what is right. The aim is to provide a

greater understanding of the concept of courage within our society. What is courage? How do we apply it in our lives? How do we move towards a more peaceful and harmonious place? The theme is instrumental for promoting harmony in our local community.

Council has initiated the Hurstville Harmony Movie Festival in partnership with Department of Education and Training. The films are quite diverse in their topics from compassion, to people with a disability, to cultural diversity to human rights. All the short films are for general viewing.

The films will be followed by discussion on harmony themes and film making. To book your seat please call Jamal Bassam, Multicultural Services on 9330 6069. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL.
