What is a Hurricane?

• A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when the winds are blowing at 74 miles per hour.

• When a tropical storm reaches the stage of a hurricane it is given a name. some names of hurricanes that has hit Belize are: Mitch, Dean, Richard, and Hattie just to name a few.

Hurricane Categories

Hurricanes range from categories 1 to 5.

A category 1 hurricane has winds that blow between 74 to 95 miles per hour.

The surge or (flood) is about 4 to 6 feet high.

If a category1hurricane hits homes will be slightly destroyed. (Minimal Damage)

A category 2 hurricane• In a category 2 hurricane the winds will

blow at 96 to 110 miles per hour, the water will rise about 6 to 10 feet above normal level.

• The mangroves will be damaged, roofs, windows and trees will be blown down, mobile homes might also be badly damaged, small boats may be damaged if they are not properly taken care of.

• The roads will flood 2 to 4 hours before the hurricane.

A category 3 hurricane• A category three hurricane has winds that

blow from 111 to 130 miles per hour.• Flooding will be 10 to 16 feet, large trees

will fall down. Low lying routes are closed 3 to 5 hours before the hurricane hits.

• Flooding will go in land at about 10 miles or more, homes that are poorly built will be damaged, large buildings will be damaged by broken tree limbs and other things. (it will cause a lot of damage).

A category 4 hurricane• A category 4 hurricane winds blow from

131 to 151 miles per hour, flooding will be 16 to 22 feet of water.

• The whole house can be blown away it will cause major damage to windows and doors.

• Land areas that are lower than 15 feet above sea level will be flooded.

• People living as far as 10 miles into the city must evacuate.

A category 5 hurricane• In a category 5 hurricane the winds will be

blowing more than 155 miles per hour. The water will rise above 22 feet .

• The roofs of houses will be blown away, and some entire buildings will be blown away. A category 5 hurricane may cause the worst damage ever. People may even die rom drowning in the floods.

Hurricane warning flags• 1st phase hurricane may hit in 72 hours. 1 red flag.

2nd phase hurricane may hit in 36 hours. 1 red flag with one black dot.• Red 1 watch

• Red 2 , 2 red flags with 1 black dot each, hurricane may hit with in 24 hours.

• 1 green flag, all clear, hurricane has passed.

Being prepared for a hurricane

Make sure to be in a safe home or be sure to make plans to go somewhere safe.

Listen to the local radio stations especially love fm.

Make sure you have enough food, water, clothes, rain gear and strong shoes.

If you have pets make sure to have somewhere safe for them to stay.

Take care of important papers.

Being prepared for a hurricane

• Cut down any trees that may destroy houses or power lines.

• Be sure to turn off gas and electricity supplies to the house.
