Hello Everyone, my name is Dean Calhoun, and Im the President and CEO of Affygility Solutions.

Social Media and Hurricanes are Similar!

#hurricanesblow

The topic that Im proposing to present at South by Southwest is why Social Media and Hurricanes are Similar. Having been born and raised on the West Coast of Florida, in my early years I have seen my fair share of hurricanes, and coming from the perspective of a small business owner trying to implement social media in a somewhat dull industry, I can tell you that social media and hurricanes are indeed very similar.

In my 60 minute presentation, I will be answering four questions? The first question is: How do I discover interesting content for my customers? When youre in a somewhat dull industry like I am, finding unique, creative, and valuable content is tough. In this presentation, I will go over some of the tactics that have worked for my company. The second question that I will answer is How do you know that my customers are enjoying the content? Is this content worthwhile to them? The third question that I will answer Is How can I apply the Cone of Uncertainty Implications to my social media marketing efforts?, the forth and final question that I will answer is, What should I do to measure success?

Cone of Uncertainty ImplicationsEstimates are inherently vague

So, just to give you a little bit of a preview, lets give a high level overview of the cone of uncertainty. The first implication is that any estimates that you make in the beginning are inherently vague, and anybody that tells you otherwise is b.s.ing you. Until you jump in and get some feedback and data, most of what you will come up with is guess work. Particularly, if youre in an industry that is new to social media.

Cone of Uncertainty ImplicationsPlans based on estimates need to be redone regularly

The next implication is that any plans that you have will need to be redone often. The traffic that youre expecting to see will be different that what you expected. Your budget will be way off how much you are paying for PPC and what your conversion stats are will be grossly different.8

Cone of Uncertainty ImplicationsUncertainties can be built into plans, but should be visible to all

The third implication of the Cone of Uncertainty is that these uncertainties can be built into the plans, but should be visible to all. In general, you will find that it always takes more time and budget than originally proposed, but very rarely does it take less.9

Cone of Uncertainty Implications

Assumptions that later prove to be a mistake are major factors in uncertainty

The forth and final implication is that some assumptions will later prove to be a flat out mistake and these will become the major factors in your uncertainty. Some where along the way, you will realize that some of your assumptions were just wrong, and you will feel like a troll in the woods. But get use to it, thats just the way that it works.10

So there you have the high level overview of my presentation. Im confident that you will find it interesting enough to make it into the Interactive program. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.11
