Overviewandrationale:Theinternshippracticumisapaperthatprovidesarelevantworkexperienceundertakeninanapprovedworkplace,enablingtheapplicationofskillsacquiredinanacademicenvironment.The paper HUMS 301/401 enables Humanities students in a variety of subjects, toundertakeworkplacementswithrelevancetotheirdisciplinesandinsodoing,earncredittowardstheirdegrees.Placementsaretailoredtosuitspecificdisciplinesandtheirrelatedworkplaces. The fundamental objective of this paper, is to provide an opportunity forstudentsincarefullyselectedandcontrolledcontexts,tolinkthedevelopmentofgenericandspecificskillsoccurringintheacademiccontextwiththeopportunitytopracticethoseskillsina‘realworkenvironment’.TheproposalalignsstronglywiththeUniversity’sstrategicimperativetofosterinstudentsa‘Commitment as a local, national and global citizen’ and facilitating ‘a wide range ofcommunityserviceandoutreachactivities’(UniversityofOtagoStrategicDirectionto2020,p. 9). In an increasingly competitive work environment, Humanities graduates must beequippedaswellaspossiblewithworkplaceskillsthatwillencourageemployerstoconsiderthemhighly employable. Work-based placements achieve a double objective, they allowstudentstofurtherdevelopandenhancethosegenericskillsina‘realworld’situationandalso enable the employers to sample, first-hand the considerable value of a Humanitiesdegreestudent.Theplacementexperiencewillprovidestudentswithameaningfullearningexperience.Thepapermaybetakenbyfull-timestudentsfromanyoftheHumanitiesdisciplinesprovidingthereisasuitableandrelevantworkplacementavailableandthestudentsaresuccessfulintheselectionprocess.Learningoutcomeswillbeidentifiedintheinternshipagreementsignedbyallthreeparties(thestudent,theUniversityandtheplacementprovider),whichareveryspecificallyrelatedto the student’s particular discipline. SelectionCriteriaforentrytoHUMS301/401

Excellent all-round students are to be considered and selected for placements. Whileacademicprowess isacritically importantelement, itmustbesupportedbypersonalandinterpersonalskillsofahighorder.

SelectionCriteriaThefollowingareessentialelementsofaselectionprocess:

1. An academic record demonstrating high grades (normally a B+ average) over thepreviousyear’slevelofstudy.

2. Endorsementbytwomembersofacademicstaff.3. Provisionofacurriculumvitaewhichdemonstratesrelevantworkand/orvoluntary

experience.Ifthisisnotpossiblethenthestudentmustgiveaclearjustificationforwantedtoundertakeaplacementsee5below

Entry toHUMS301/401mustbeapprovedbyboth theDepartmental supervisorandtheHUMScoordinator.Allstudentsmustgettheiradmissiontothispaperformallysignedoff.Allstudentsarestronglyencouragedtodiscusstheiradmissionandtheproposedinternshipwith the Departmental supervisor prior to applying for the paper. There is no automaticrightofentryforadmissiontoeitherHUMS301orHUMS401

Enrolment

Interested students should talk with a member of staff in the relevantdepartmentabouttheirinterestinthispaperandpossibleprojects.Ifthestaffmember agrees to look after the internship they will act as departmentsupervisor.

Thestudentshouldchecktheselectioncriteriaabove.

The department supervisor should contact the Humanities coordinatorAssociate Prof.Alex Trapezniktoindicatethatyouwishtotakethispaper.

Thestudentandsupervisor shouldcomplete theshortpro-formaandsendacopy to Alex Trapeznik to get sign off on behalf of the division. The fullagreementshouldbecompletedwhentheinternshipstarts.NotethatthereisadifferentProformaforsummerschoolstudentsanddistancestudents.

ThestudentshouldapplytotakethepaperandrequestspecialpermissionineVisiontoenrolineitherHUMS301orHUMS401

WorkloadFor undergraduate study 1 point = 10 hours, e.g. the expected student workload is 180hoursforan18-pointpaper,200hoursfora20-pointpaper.Everypaperhasapointvaluethatindicatesitscontributiontothequalificationenrolledfor(ortoanyotherqualificationtowhich that paper can contribute). AssessmentProceduresforbothHUMS301and401Therewillbethreecomponentstotheassessmentprogramme:1. ReflectiveFieldNotes. In thisexercise, the studentwould completeaweeklydiaryof

work events that they reflect upon, comparing practice to theory and the differencesexperienced by them as interns. Reflective Field Notes should be discussed with thedepartmental supervisor at the fortnightly meetings. While there is no set formatapproximately1pageperweekisreasonable.

2. Preparation of a report, portfolio orhybrid, by the student for submission at end of

placement. which is designed to develop student’s research skills within a workenvironment, using a varietyof sources fromboth theworkplace andacademia. It isalso designed to demonstrate the student’s ability to undertake an applied task orresearchbasedassignmentwithaquantifiableoutcome.i. Report: this takes the form of a research report and is used where the student

spendsmostoftheirtimeresearchingaparticularissueoftopicforanorganisationandattheendoftheplacementprovidesareporttotheorganisationonthetopic.Notethatyoumaybeaskedtomakechangestoyourreportbyyourdepartmentalsupervisor tomakethereportappropriate for theorganisation.Pleaseensurethatthese changes are made as it is required that the report be received by theorganisationforyoutobedeemedtohavecompletedthepaper.

ii. Portfolio: this applies where there has been a large practical component in theinternship.Thiscan includematerialsproducedduringthe intershiporevidenceofthematerials produced.Where there are no actualmaterials (e.g a performance0thenothertypesofevidencecanbeincluded.Aswellasthematerial,whichshouldbe included as attachments the portfolio should include an explanatory andreflective section which explains the various tasks undertaken , how these wereachieved, any problems and how these were addressed and any other salientmaterial.Thisportioncouldalsobeareferencetypeliteraturesection.

iii. Hybrid; this containselementsofa research reportandpracticalmaterials suchasformpartofaportfolio.ThefirstpartoftheHybridwillbetheresearchreportwithmaterialsaddedthatindicatethepracticecomponentsofthehybrid.

At the start of your internship you shoulddiscusswith yourDepartmental supervisor theform your submission will take. It is possible that the form of your final submission willdevelopasyourinternshipprogresses,thisisalsoentirelynormal,whatmattersistokeepdiscussingyoursubmissionformatwithyourdepartmentalsupervisor.Againthelengthandformatwilldependonthenatureofthetaskanddepartmentaladvice.As a general guide students doing a portfolio with a large practice component will haveshorterreportswhere3,500-4000wordsisnormalwithamaximumof7000foraresearchtypereport.

3. Symposium:End of placement assessment and presentation conducted as part of a

HUMSsymposiumandattendedbytheHumanitiesCoordinator,departmentalandthementor from the organisation. This session is open to students, supervisors, invitedguestsandinterestedmembersofthepublic.Familyandfriendsarewelcometoattend.Students must ensure their workplace mentor has a copy of the End of PlacementAssessmentForm,andthisshouldbereturnedtotheDepartmentalSupervisorbeforethesymposium.Submissiondate:Thereflectivefieldnotesandthereport/portfolioshouldbecompletedby the date of the End of placement assessment and presentation session. Anyextension to this date must be negotiated with and agreed by your departmentalsupervisor.

All students must attend 2 joint meetings with the Humanities Course DirectorA s s o c i a t e ProfessorAlex Trapeznik. These are meetings to be jointly attended byall interns from allparticipatingdepartments.Therewillbeameeting in thesecondorthirdweekofsemester,mid semester- theweek after themid semester break. Dates areprovided on the HUMS instruction sheet. All students are expected to attend the fullsymposium day and to thus also support fellow internship students. Students shouldinform their departmental andorganisationsupervisorof thedate for thesymposiumatthestartoftheinternship.

Whyundertakeaninternship?

TheUniversityofOtagohasanumberof internshippapers,usuallyrelatedtospecificandoftenprofessionalcourses.ThispaperofferstheopportunitiesidentifiedinthosepapersforstudentsstudyingintheHumanitiesDivision.TheprimaryaimofHUMS301andHUMS401is to enable students to develop their workplace skills and in doing so enhance theiremployability post-study. These skills are valued by both students and prospectiveemployers.

Expectations

Yourworkplace in conjunctionwithyourdepartmentand theHumanities coordinatorhasagreedtoaplacementthatfulfilstheacademicrequirementsforthepaper.Shouldyoufeelthattheseacademicrequirementsarenotbeingfulfilledandthetermsagreedbyallpartiesnot being adhered to then youwill need to discuss these concernswith theDepartmentsupervisorand/or theHumanities coordinator. Similarly should theotherparties feel thatyou are not adhering to the agreed placement terms then they should also discuss theirconcernswiththeDepartmentsupervisorortheHumanitiescoordinator.

Transport

If therearetransport issuesandifyouneedtousetransportduringyour internshiptheseshould be discussed with both your academic departmental supervisor and yourorganisationmentor. Any transport costs necessitated in carrying out your organisationaltaskshould,withinreasonbesupportedbytheorganisation.

Studentcontacts

During the semester inwhich your internship occurs therewill be opportunities tomeetwith other internship students. Two formally identified opportunities for internships tomeetwillbearrangedbytheHumanitiescoordinator,otherscanbearrangedbystudentsatmutuallyagreedtimes.

Organisationalinformation

Student interns should be aware that organisations that agree to take on an intern willrequire their commitment and support and will take resources and time that in normalcircumstanceswouldbededicated to theirownwork related tasks.Students shouldatalltimesbemindfulof thisandmakeeveryeffort to facilitate thegoodandeasyworkingoftheirplacementorganisationanditsstaff.

Whytakeonanintern?

TheUniversityofOtagohasanumberof internshippapers,usuallyrelatedtospecificandoftenprofessionalcourses.ThispaperHUMS301/401offerstheopportunitiesidentifiedinthosepapers to students studying in theHumanitiesDivision. Theprimary aimofHUMS301andHUMS401 istoenablestudentstodeveloptheirworkplaceskillsand indoingsoenhance their employability post-study. These skills are valued by both students andprospectiveemployers.Foremployers thisoffersanopportunity tobenefit fromtheskillsoffered by a high achieving andwell-motivated student. The student can assistwith andundertake tasks or a research project that benefits the organisation but that theorganisationmaynormallyfinddifficulttoresource.Throughthestudentstheorganisationcangainabetterunderstandingofthetypeofskillsandpotentialofferedbynewgraduatesandinturnprovidefeedbacktotheuniversitythatcouldusefullyinformuniversityteachingand student skill development. The internship offers organisations a chance to developrelationshipswiththeuniversityandfuturegraduates,helpingthemdevelopskillsthatwillsetthemingoodsteadfortheircareerdevelopment.Whilethestudentmaybeworkingona particular task or in a specific area we would hope that they will also be given theopportunitytoobserveandlearnfromthebroaderactivitiescoveredbyyourorganisation.The internship lasts for one semester and covers approximately 12 weeks. The studentshouldideallybepresentintheorganisationforapproximately1dayperweekorequivalenttime.

Expectations

The organisation will provide an internship placement that provides a real and positivelearningopportunity for the student thatwill be appropriately supported andmonitored.Yourworkplaceinconjunctionwiththestudent’sacademicdepartmentandtheHumanitiescoordinatorhasagreedtoaplacementthatfulfilstheacademicrequirementsforthepaperaswell as the organisation’s agreed internship tasks and role. Should you feel that theserequirementsarenotbeingfulfilledandthetermsagreedbyallpartiesnotbeingadheredtothenyouwillneedtodiscussyourconcernswiththeDepartmentalsupervisorand/ortheHumanitiescoordinator.Similarlyshouldtheotherpartiesfeelthatyouarenotadheringtothe agreed placement terms then they should also discuss their concerns with theDepartmentsupervisorortheHumanitiescoordinator

Theprimary aimofHUMS301andHUMS401 istoenablestudentstodeveloptheirworkplaceskillsand indoingsoenhance their employability post study. These skills are valued by both students andacademicdepartments.Foracademicdepartmentsthereisanopportunitytobenefitfromtheskillsofferedbyahighachievingandwell-motivatedstudentandwhoseexperiencewillenhance their commitment to and their ability to see the potential offered by theirdisciplinary knowledge and skills, particularly with respect to post study careeropportunities. The internship offers departments an important avenue to highlight thepotentialofferedbytheirdiscipline,toengageattheindividuallevelwithintelligenthighlymotivated students and can provide marketing opportunities for the department. Whilesupervising an internship placement student is a commitment it also offers excitingopportunitiesforthestudentandawaythatdepartmentscansupportgoodandcommittedstudents. You are strongly encouraged to identify potential internship opportunities forstudents, especially those that can be used in supporting development of a long termrelationshipwithorganisationsthatcanprovideplacements.

Expectations

Thedepartmentprovidingtheinternshipplacementmustensurethattheplacementoffersarealandpositivelearningopportunityforthestudentthatwillbeappropriatelysupportedandmonitored.Yourdepartmentneedstoensurethattheplacementfulfilstheacademicrequirementsfora300or400levelpaperandthatthestudentcantakethepaperandstillmeettheirdegreerequirements.

Shouldyoufeelthatanyofthecontributingparties,thatistheorganisationorthestudentare notmeeting the agreed terms and conditions then you should discuss your concernswiththeHumanitiescoordinatorassoonaspossible.SimilarlyshouldtheotherpartiesfeelthatyouarenotadheringtotheagreedplacementtermsthentheyshouldalsodiscusstheirconcernswiththeHumanitiescoordinator.

Workingwithastudent:Yourrole:Responsibilitiesandexpectations

1. Toassess the task/setof responsibilitiesor researchproject beingproposed tomakesurethatitmeetsthedepartmentanduniversity’sacademicrequirements

(25%),Finalreport/portfolio(60%)andtotakepartintheendofplacementsymposium(15%)with the student and theHumanities coordinator. TheDepartmental supervisorshouldnegotiateanyworkloadimplicationswiththeirHeadofDepartment.

Attheendoftheplacementtheorganisationcompletesanassessmentofthestudent’splacement,seeAppendixB.Youareinvitedtoattendtheendofplacementsymposiumpresentation.ThistakestheformofasymposiumwhereallstudentstakingHUMS301and401givea15minutepresentationontheirinternship.Youarewelcometoattendasmuch of the symposium as youwish.
