Human Landscapes

Thoughts settle like dew and trickle down, tracing the lines of this collection of figurative artworks. They evaporate and come anew as we move through their human landscapes portraying different moods. C F John’s meditative quality delves inward into layers of consciousness, making us reflect on our responses to the subject’s introverted eyes and sombre frame. Gujarappa B G’s solemnly compelling figures share a similar introspective character. Are their stories untold, unfinished or are they searching within for something still undiscovered? We are left to draw our own conclusions. Gopinath S’s pensive sculpture presents a heavy, curious and almost resigned mood. Questions are raised by Pramod Thakur’s painting of a faceless woman, invoking themes of anonymity. Who is she? When was she that?

An anonymity is also seen in Ranjana Ramchander’s paintings, capturing a sort of namelessness where the subjects share proximity, like they share a canvas, but are still seemingly distant from one another. In contrast, Laxman Aelay’s works present warm everyday interactions; a quick acknowledgement as one passes by for work and gossiping with friends outdoors. Revati Gangal explores the individual and harboured aspirations through themes of day to day unpredictability, instability, contemplation and leisure. Everydayness meanders through other works as well. Achala Gangadhar’s works glimpse into the ‘everydays’ of village life. Siva Balan S’s colourful women, carrying pots and leading camel, present beauty in the quotidian. Another universal theme, memories of childhood and play, are addressed in the works of Ajay Kothawale. Portraying its own child-like playfulness, Subramaniam G’s collage rendition of Radha and Krishna, with bold hues of blue against a vibrant yellow, brings a smile to the face. The same subjects find flesh in Priya Vimal’s evocative sculptures. Shyamal Mukherjee’s caricature depictions of upper class Bengali society, with exaggerated features and a distinct style, glint of humour.

A joyous thread runs through Dnyaneshwar Bembade’s depictions of a community enjoying music and art. Animals, like a cow and elephant, are seen in his works, and also in Dewashish Das’ paintings where a tiger is symbolically juxtaposed with a woman. Manish V Bobade’s paintings illustrate a relaxed environment; a cow and goat graze, a man enjoys a restful break while another is accompanied by his dog. TM Aziz’s sole piece in the collection exudes wonder with its fantastical background. Where is the child with his back towards us going? Towards the future or into his own imagination? We all look at the same picture and see different things. While somethings can be measured with certainty- 57 artworks by 17 artists, the experiences they invoke, as one moves through this human landscape, cannot be quantified.
