Keel cooling first appeared inthe early 1800s when a coppertube was hung over the side of aboat to condense steam. This laterevolved into pieces of channelwelded onto the hull. These channelcooling systems offered importantadvantages over raw water cooling.They eliminated silt and sandbuildup in engine jackets andprotected engines against salt watercorrosion. Unfortunately, their sheerbulk reduced a ship’s capacity andincreased its drag. They were alsoprone to external fouling. Today, keelcoolers are closed circuit coolingunits mounted to a vessel’s hullbeneath the waterline. This closedcooling system eliminated the needfor an inboard heat exchanger, rawwater pumps and strainers as well ashigh maintenance.

Engine jacket water is piped directly to the FERNSTRUMGRIDCOOLER keel cooler, which cools the water andthen sends it back to the engine. The GRIDCOOLERkeel cooler is in constant contact with the sea water fortransfer of heat.

STACKED GRIDCOOLER keel coolers produce twicethe amount of cooling with less space required.

To ensure that you get precisely what you need, webegin by asking a lot of questions. We’ll need toknow your engine make and model number,power rating, heat rejection, freshwaterflow rate, and the temperaturerequirements of the water entering andleaving the cooler. If you don’t have allthis information, we’ll get it for you - we maintain current files onall major marine engine manufacturers. We’ll also need your vessel’shull design, it’s minimum speed at full rated power, and the maximum water temperature in which it willoperate. With this data, we can determine exactly what size GRIDCOOLER® keel coolers your vessel will need- under it’s most severe operating conditions.

E-OPTION GRIDCOOLER keel coolers have zinc anodesmounted at the ends of the units. This modification is availableupon request at no additional charge and works well for fishingvessels where entanglement of nets is a concern.
