For every action there is always a reason behind it Some people say they act without any expectations Others will not move without being persuasion Throughout our worldrsquos history there are many individuals who have enjoyed great prominence through their great deeds and accomplishments Whichever conclusion is met life proves that it takes action to get somewhere While many donrsquot solicit approval I believe that itrsquos necessary and important for everyone to know their importance

Basketball superstar Michael Jordan didnrsquot become a champion all by himself His glory was made possible with the assistance of his teammates and coaching staff Sure Jordan was the focal point of the team but everyone played a significant role In their absence many of us could argue that Jordan and the Chicago Bulls wouldnrsquot be champions In order for his team to reach prominence Jordan had to lead by example and also encourage them This meant acknowledging each of his teammates strength and weapons and letting them know how important they were for the success of the entire team

In life we are also required to inform our supporting cast (friends and loved ones) of their importance in our lives We must tell our friends why we value their friendships Let them know how your life has been enhanced through the experiences we share both good and bad A truly good friend can allow you to see yourself from a different perspective

Tell your parents how important they are Let your children know how important their success is to you Even that person who works relentlessly to bring the worst out in you let them know how great it really makes you feel It doesnrsquot matter if yoursquore bringing me up or trying to pull me down you role is still important in my life

When mother of two Deon Siler would take her boys to the barbershop when they were younger she was always displeased with the work and tried to let the barber know exactly what she wanted The barber then gave her

the inspiration that led her to find and follow her passion The words he spoke that day ldquoWhy donrsquot you do it yourselfrdquo would have offended the most average customer However not Deon 14 years later she is a prospering barber at the United Headlinerz Barbershop in Greensboro NC

Barbering is not known as a field for women but Siler has never let that shy her away from her talent She mentioned the 2002 comedy film Barbershop where the rapper Eve played the female barber in a male dominated industry Eve was portrayed as this extra tough woman who worked hard to make a name for herself as a talented barber

Silerrsquos knows this story all too well because it is her daily life that she has been dealing with from rude customers that have doubted her skills for many years to loving customers

that come back again and again ldquoIt was hurtful in the beginningmdashthere were many nights where I sat down and cried but Irsquove learned to bite that bulletrdquo said Siler

Siler plans on becoming an instructor so that she can bring more women into the barbering industry ldquoYou have to embrace having a talent and a skill and not feel like you donrsquot amount or compare to males or male barbersrdquo she says She wants to empower women and her community She is also an active member of the community organization ldquoLadies of the Triadrdquo

Even though there have been people that have refused her servicesmdashthose nights of tears are long gone So many established men have welcomed Siler with open arms She has cut the heads of many celebrities such as Plies Jadakiss Young Buck and Jim Jones She has also entered and won several hair shows that show that real talent cannot be denied Those local patrons that have shunned her have done nothing but pushed her harder

2nd Annual Hip-Hop Community JAAMS By Nia SmithPhoto by VB Still

On August 4 and 5 VB Still and Marty B will host the 2nd Annual Hip-Hop Community JAAMS (Joining Athletes Artists and Musicians for our Schools and Communities) at Aggie Park at 1 pm This event will give youth the opportunity to enjoy a weekend of the hip-hop culture fun entertainment and education

Vonda Sampson aka VB Still a poet educator mother and most of all a woman of her community started this event last year with the purpose of showcasing the hip-hop culture into a positive light ldquoSo many people look at hip-hop as negative because they associate it with rap music however they are two totally different thingsrdquo explains VB Still ldquoHip-hop in its originality is positive music that uplifts the community while rap music is usually secular music over a good beatrdquo For more than 20 years VB Still has been in the music industry in some way shape or form and has a deep love for the culture This love is shared by her son Marty B who has found his own way into the hip-hop community as well When her son started to work on his music she realized how effective hip-hop could be if used as a tool to reach our youth in a positive way

ldquoYou have to meet youth at what they love and young people love hip-hopmdashthey love musicrdquo said VB Still For the past 10 years VB Still has managed and guided her sonrsquos career along with being a youth mentor which gives her the perfect credentials to produce this hip-hop

community event Not only will this event feature the communityrsquos best musicians and artists she also makes it a point to incorporate athletesmdashanother way to broaden her reach to todayrsquos youth

This yearrsquos Hip-Hop Community JAAMS has partnered with The Carolina Cheetahs ABA the triadrsquos professional basketball team I Am A Queenrsquos Back to School Drive and Rock Roots Productions to support and encourage positivity in our young people

ady Shaersquos Hair Salon is uniquely in a class of its own From the time patrons enter the reception area to the time they depart they are treated as royalty The southern-style elegant architecture of the exterior of the salon gives way to a sleek sophisticated and modern interior As soon as clients enter Lady Shaersquos salon they are warmly

greeted by owner Shannon Hairston or any other member of the salon staff Itrsquos just one example of how the salon stands behind its mantra that ldquoLady Shaersquos is the place where everyone is somebody all of the timerdquo

Clients are made to feel right at home in the salonrsquos relaxed environment They are offered a choice of water tea coffee or hot cocoa as well as any of the available ldquotreatrdquo for the day In short clients are treated like a dear family member In fact thatrsquos exactly how each stylist at the salon describes the atmosphere They all agree-itrsquos just like a family teaching one another and helping each other out There is much to be said when a group of stylists varying ages personalities and skill levels unanimously testify to the secret of a salonrsquos success Similarly and perhaps more importantly it speaks volumes about the integrity of the salonrsquos management and ownership

Shannon Hairston began Lady Shaersquos Hair Salon in 2008 but she has been doing hair much longer than that For many years she worked at other salons and was pretty much content nevertheless circumstances necessitated she make a move and she hasnrsquot looked back since She grew up doing hair and always knew she wanted to do hair She was that girl who was always styling friends hair in high school as well as playing the part of kitchen-tician at home especially on Sunday mornings She just loves helping people out and serving others She says ldquoService is service however you do it make a differencerdquo Itrsquos not just something she says but she lives it ldquoIrsquom still the person that helps the little lady with groceries It pleases me to please others Thatrsquos just my personality Thatrsquos just merdquo says Hairston

Her desire to help and serve others isnrsquot just confined to the individuals who sit in her styling chair She is reaching out through other avenues as well Over 10 years ago when she initially began her career in the hair field she like many others was inclined to acquire a part time job to help fill-in the holes in her finances until she built a stable clientele She became a licensed CNA and began working at a group home Of course being that she loves to serve people she found that she really enjoyed working with the individuals at the home and providing assistance However having to punch a clock and check in has always left a sour taste Hairstonrsquos mouth

She has never been one to shy away from work she just feels if she has to push that hard it should be for herself Which is exactly what she did ldquoItrsquos just my personality As long as God allows me I will never work for anybodyrdquo says Hairston She had the experience she just needed to know the set-up process Hairston spent a considerable amount of time simply researching and planning It wasnrsquot long before she opened the doors to her very own group home A Brighter Day She admits itrsquos a delicate balancing act operating as an owner-stylist as well as owner and manager of a group home Itrsquos her ambition and proactive mentality that enables her to make it all seem so easy She says she just does what she has to do and gets the job done

The group of Lady Shae stylists have been known to participate in many community service projects together From providing their time and services at Back to School hair events to various drives to participating in one of the local health organizations events such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association the ladies of Lady Shae Hair Salon are all concerned about providing community service and support as well as industry support Likewise the stylists are really able to support assist and connect with their clients in a more personalized manner Traditionally stylists work with their patrons in an open area side-by-side However the Lady Shaersquos Salon is uniquely designed so that each stylist has their own styling room Itrsquos an accommodation that Hairston is particularly proud She says that feature allows the hair stylists to give clients their undivided attention as well as

provide a singular area that is inspired by and reflective of each stylistrsquos personality

The individual rooms and main floor area (for two of the stylists) is what provides hair stylist Crystal Johnson from Siler City NC the opportunity to showcase her artistic personality Although Johnson has been doing hair for 18 years two and a half of which have been at Lady Shaersquos Salon she also boasts a degree in art Her room is the physical manifestation of her creative personality The footprint of her artistic ability is evidenced in everything she does from her love of color application and treatment to her unique hair styles ldquoI dream hair I live hair I think about it all the timerdquo she says Johnson also holds her instructors license

Kimberly Johnson has been a stylist for over 20 years She also recalls doing hair in her local Greensboro neighborhood since she was a child For the past one and a half years Johnson has been showcasing her skills at Lady Shaersquos Salon especially her skills in the use of weave She definitely knows her way around a weave In fact she is considered a master weaveologist In addition she is a make-up stylist with an impressive clientele list She pursues both areas with vigor and passion

Originally from New Jersey Kenya Howell has been at Lady Shaersquos for six months but she has been in the industry for 20 years She says she specializes in making sure her clients understand the importance of and have healthy hair She too has always wanted to be a hair stylist There was really no other option Howell is trained in the application of the high-end Fusion hair extensions-a form of permanent extensions that are literally fused to the hair for a natural and long-lasting effect She says she gets great joy just seeing the smile on her clients faces after she has done their hair

Jodie Briggs has been styling hair since 2002 The Richmond VA native began doing hair on the side as a sophomore at Norfolk State University Ironically she ultimately received a degree in journalism Although Briggs is

capable of styling all hair types she specializes in all things related to natural hair She loves the fact that as a stylist she has a hand in cultivating and building confidence in her clients simply by encouraging them to love their hair

With over 28 years in the hair care industry under her belt Kimberly Moorman has a great deal of experience in the industry She teaches cosmetology at Guilford Technical Community College as well as Rockingham Community College Her take on hair is very interesting She studies it She wants to know why it does what it does Perhaps she could be described as the ldquohair scientistrdquo of the group She loves getting her clients to step outside of their box and try different looks

the average person to increase their net income and net worth almost on autopilot But doing the same in todayrsquos market requires a different game plan

amela Green is the founder owner and operator of PSG Event Management a full service event design and planning company The Sanford NC native says she specializes in all the ldquofun stuffrdquo From retreats to reunions anniversaries to retirements and weddings to church events PSG is more than capable of handling

it all Each event is custom designed and tailor-made for each client

The exploding business was inaugurated only four short months ago and although it may seem to be a bit ldquogreenrdquo in relation to its founding Pamela Green is certainly not a novice or a ldquowet-behind-the earsrdquo business woman In fact she boasts over a decadersquos worth of related education and experience After graduating in 2001 with a degree in business management from Shaw University she took the first step on the path that would lead to an impressive career in the hospitality and service industry

Green immediately landed a front desk position at a hotel It wasnrsquot long before she had risen in the ranks past that entry-level position to hotel general sales manager catering director and ultimately general manager From there she gained experience in sales and market development for a major national firm Before long she was recruited by another major player in the hospitality industry and subsequently returned to her roots-the hotel business Nevertheless in late 2011 within a few short months of accepting the new position she became a victim of the slow economy and was released from her job when the company was forced to downsize

She was undoubtedly shaken by the abrupt life-altering event that had taken place but she never deviated from her optimistic outlook on life Her thoughts may have lingered in the uncertainties of what lie ahead but she whole-heartedly trusted that God had divinely orchestrated that major life-event to force her into her lifersquos purpose In addition she says all the knowledge and information she garnered was invaluable

ldquoI truly believe things happen for a reason If God had kept me on that job I wouldnrsquot be where I am right now Irsquom certain I wouldnrsquot own my own businessrdquo says Green ldquoI would have put it on the back burner I would have been thinking about it talking about it but I wouldnrsquot have done itrdquo

It eventually dawned on Green everything she had been doing for someone elsersquos company all the expertise she had she could just as easily do it for herself She took the initial leap and established the company From inception PSG Event Management has handled an array of projects and dealt with different customers with various event design and budget needs She believes itrsquos important for contracted or potential clients to realize they are not relegated to have a mediocre or less fulfilling event just because there may be financial limitations

Green recalls an extremely rewarding event she was contracted to coordinate ldquoI was able to work with a family who was struggling financially yet the husband wanted to do something really nice for his wiferdquo she explains ldquoHe didnrsquot have extra income but with a monthly budget structure and a lot of ingenuity I was able to create a memorable 30th birthday celebration for her I knew when I saw the tears in his eyes on the evening of the event this is what I was born to dordquo

Regardless of the budget Green says there is a level of elegance and professionalism that every PSG event will have regardless ldquoYou may have a limited budget but thatrsquos why you have a great planner to do the thinking and lsquoworking outrsquo for yourdquo she says ldquoFor example you may think plastic tablecloths and utensils are cheaper [therefore the best route] for an upscale event but I can get real china and linens for the same costrdquo She is able to reach back and utilize the great contacts connections and relationships she made with vendors while working in

Jimmie ldquoJJrdquoJeterinston-Salem NC native Jimmie Jeter is a triple threat mdash he sings acts and dances He has worked with the North Carolina Black Reparatory Company the Kernersville Little Theater North Forsyth High School Theater

West Side Civic Theater Company and the Community Theater of Greensboro He is also a member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church As talented and gifted as he obviously is he confesses that his life would be nothing without the mercy and love of God stating that he is the ultimate ruler of his life and refuses to have it any other way

Jeter is the son of Steven and Sonya Waddell and brother to Joi and Jasmine Jeter ldquoAs I look back over my life I guess all those whoopings workedrdquo he says In his 18 years of life on Earth he says there have been many challenges but the greatest struggle he says was finding out why he truly loves God ldquoIrsquom sure most kids my age and younger can agree that we are ldquotoldrdquo most of our lives to believe God but never really given the opportunity to genuinely experience him for ourselvesrdquo he says ldquoIn this past year I have experienced God for myself and in a new light so the challenges that I face every day are now minor because nothing really is greater than my love for Christrdquo

He is a recent graduate of the 2012 high school drama program of the North Carolina School of the Arts There he was challenged in every aspect of his life mentally physically emotionally physiologically and spiritually Some of his academic accomplishments include the Sharon Poindexter Citizenship Award of North Forsyth High School Humanitarian Award - Human Relations Committee of Winston Salem Best Male Actor- North Carolina Theater Company Best Leading Male- North Carolina Theater

Company and he is a Honor Roll student

Not only did God give Jeter the opportunity to go to the best high school for Performing Arts but He also opened the door for Jeter to attend the best college for Performing Arts mdash The Juilliard School in New York City with his tuition paid in full through scholarships He says his aspirations are to continuously work as an actor whether in movies stage plays or television He also desires to work professionally with Denzel Washington Will Smith Idris Elba and Johnny Depp ldquoI would also like to one day become an artistic director of a theater companyrdquo he says

becoming a salon owner She is inspired by the satisfaction of her clients express after receiving her service One in particular is Mrs Lillian Graves ldquoShe walked into my salon after her first treatment of chemotherapy and asked me to be strong for her It was my first time ever having a client with cancer and also one still in the process of receiving treatmentrdquo she says Mrs Graves had faith in her and she says she knew that she could not let her down As she draped her she says she noticed a couple of strands of hair were on her towel Once the water from the shampoo bowl touched her hair she says the hair from her head began to fill the bottom of the shampoo bowl ldquoI had to fight back tears as I took my hands to remove all the long hair she had on her head and place it in the trash because it was clogging the sink before I could continue to shampoo her hairrdquo she says

When she was finished shampooing her hair Pickard says she was bald with little strands of hair still on her head She says this was the hardest moment in her life and career As she began to look in the mirror Mrs Graves said ldquoitrsquos gone and but it could have been worse I am still here and it is just hairrdquo Pickard says she thanks God for allowing her to share that

experience with her client She is now a breast cancer survivor and has regrown all

of her long thick beautiful hair

Pickard says that if it wasnrsquot for God she wouldnrsquot be the person she is today lsquoI wouldnrsquot be fortunate to have

atrina Tia McKenzie is very energetic and outgoing besides her love to read and dance She is a huge sports fanatic and professes the Dallas Cowboys and the Boston Celtics as her 1 teams She attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and graduated

with a bachelorrsquos degree in biology and chemistry and a masterrsquos in chemistry She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated and says she is addicted to physical fitness

ldquoI have always struggled with my weight my entire life I was introduced to Weight Watchers at a very young age and tried every fad diet that was out there when I was growing up and never lost much weightrdquo she says Twice in her life she says she found herself wearing a size 16-18 and weighing well over 220 lbs ldquoThen I found weight lifting and my world changed I am now a Funky Fit Aerobics Instructor and bodybuilderrdquo she states

McKenzie began working out in 1998 at Quincy Roberts Elite Fitness Center Inc in Greensboro NC She was introduced to owner Quincy Roberts and was asked if shersquod ever thought about being in a bodybuilding contest ldquoOf course my answer was lsquoNO WAYrsquo I have never even owned a two piece swimsuitrdquo she says Roberts was great and encouraged McKenzie to do it ldquoHe said lets train like you are going to do a show if you arenrsquot ready we will not do it but if you are then letrsquos go for itrdquo she says

McKenzie says what she loves most about bodybuilding is the transformation that happens to your body ldquoIt is the best way that I have found to sculpt my body to look the way I want it to look It is also a great way to relieve stressrdquo she says Even with limitations she says bodybuilding allows her to feel that shersquos as good as everyone else and like there is nothing physically wrong with her

One of the biggest challenges she has faced during her life was when she was diagnosed with a bone disease in 2009 Her whole life she says she knew something was wrong with her left femur but no doctor ever could find out what it was She was told in the fifth grade that she had a hairline fracture and it would heal on its own It never did ldquoI just got used to limping and to the fact that I would have this hairline fracture foreverrdquo she says ldquoIt caused me to not be able to be as active as I wanted to be when growing up When I found bodybuildingweight lifting I realized that if I strengthened my leg muscles the pain was lessenedrdquo

However in 2009 an orthopedic doctor finally found out what the problem was She was diagnosed with Fibrous Dysplasia She was born with the disease active in certain parts of her bones as it replaced the bone marrow with a fibrous material This exchange had been occurring in McKenziersquos femur for a while and by 2009 the whole top half of her femur was a fibrous matter ldquoI was immediately taken to surgery and told that she could step off of a curb at any moment and her bone could shatter

The doctors were astonished that she was in the process of becoming an aerobics instructor at the time and doing aerobics up to four hours a day She says the surgery involved screwing a steel plate onto the side of her thigh bone ldquoIt was as painful as it sounds I was out of work for six weeks and had to go from a wheelchair to a walker then to crutches I recovered slowly and was back working out almost full strength after six monthsrdquo she says

Almost a year to the date she was taken back to surgery to the operating room to have Arthroscopic knee surgery on the opposite leg because no cartilage was there Back to the crutches she went and out of work for another six weeks She slowly recovered from that after another three months Soon she was back up to 213 lbs and miserable again she says ldquoI tried to lose weight again to no avail Then I remembered how I lost the weight back in 1999 - bodybuilding So I went back to my first love and with new limitations from my surgeries I decided to train for another show after ten yearsrdquo she says Her new ambitions were supported by personal training from IFBB Pro Henderson Gordon at MaxFit Customized Personal Training Center in High Point NC

She says she dieted for 365 days and on March 31 2012 she was back on the stage again competing in a body building contest She went from 213 lbs and 345 body fat to 144 lbs and 19 body fat She says she pulls her inspiration from people that have come in contact with at the gyms throughout her life These facilities include Elite Fitness Center in Greensboro AC Fitness in Greensboro NrsquoShapewithrsquoN Fitness and Image Studio in Charlotte Peak Fitness in Charlotte Hayes Taylor YMCA in Greensboro The Rush located on Randleman Road in Greensboro and MaxFit Customized Personal Training Center in High Point

We have to do it againmdashGod blessed us on Saturday June 16 with beautiful weather and a great atmosphere It was such a great experience for everyone involved There was so much food so many people and a wonderful time The first Huami Magazine Community Cookout was a huge success Alana Allen Deputy Editor for Huami Magazine said it best We all contributed for one cause to give back to our community with selfless acts and compassion

The cookout was a free event for anyone who wanted to enjoy a family-fun filled day at the park in downtown Greensboro We had great music thanks to Duncan Butler Agape Muzic Douglas Willett Signature Soundz Justin the Beloved and Bryce of Destiny Christian Center in Greensboro The master of ceremony DJ Big Boi came through in a big way by keeping the audiencersquos attention with his skillful techniques What is a cookout with a grill master Dave Hughes didnrsquot miss a beat and kept the flames jumping and hotdogs smoking

Most importantly this event could have never happened without the sponsors and volunteers The volunteers who filled every gap from attending the inflatable jumpers serving snow cones serving food and more The volunteers made the difference This event showcased the love that so many of us have for others in our community There is no way we could have fed nearly 800 people without them

A common challenge for patients diagnosed with MS is affording the treatment and

medication With her event Haithrsquosrsquo goal was to increase my knowledge about her ailment and that of her family and friends also When her uncle Clark who had been battling cancer was told that he only had six months to live she wanted to include his fight in her event as well ldquoMy uncle always loved to have a good time He was called superman because no matter what the situation he was always there for his family and friendsrdquo says Haith

She says she truly believe she will be healed Plans are in action for the 2nd Annual Prosperity For Life event in 2013 Haith says she also wants to produce other fund-raising and awareness functions throughout the year as well ldquoI hope to reach as many people as possible Life is a journey you never know the outcome all you can do is not to take life or people for granted and to thank God to be here everydayrdquo she says

hen it comes to the summer our kids enjoy having fun hanging with friends during their two and a half month break from school However when August peaks its beautiful head parents have to prepare their kids to get back on the routine of a bed time attend school orientation and back to school shopping

The most important thing is the necessary supplies all of our children need in order to be successful It doesnrsquot matter what grade it goes from Pre K-12th graders needing school supplies However what happens to those children who donrsquot have the same opportunity as their peers What about the parents who have to focus on paying the bills and worrying about school supplies later This is the real truth of so many children in our communities not being prepared to go back to school

However I Am A Queen Footsteps to Follow and James B Dudley High School Athletic Booster Club is changing the stigma that our youth go through on the first day of school All of these organizations have collaborated together to impact the community in a positive way with the 4th Annual Back to School Drive at the Windsor Recreation Center located at 1601 E Lee St Greensboro NC on Saturday August 4 from 11 am to 1 pm

Last yearrsquos goal was set at 100 back packs and the organizations exceeded that goal of securing 106 with all supplies needed This yearrsquos goal is to secure 200 back packs along with other supplies which means 200 kids in the triad will be helped Supplies needed include

All donations are tax deductible through the partnership of James B Dudley High School Athletic Booster Club a 501 c 3 tax exempt organization
