Continued increase in overnight stays at hotels, hostels and vacation villages In November 2009 nearly 710,000 overnight stays were made in the county’s hotels, hostels and vacation villages. That is 2 percent more than during the same month in 2008. At the same time, overnight stays declined somewhat in the country as a whole. This rise is localized to facilities in the city, while elsewhere in the county, the number of guest nights was unchanged. These good results are attributable to a rise in numbers of foreign visitors. In the period from January to November 2009, 8.2 million overnight stays were made in Stockholm County. That is 17,000 more than during the same period in 2008. Camping is not included in these accommodation figures. Where do the visitors come from? Over 521,000 overnight stays were made by Swedish visitors in November. The number of Swedish overnight stays was practically unchanged for the month and for the year in general. In November, Swedish visitors accounted for 73 percent of all overnight stays. For the year as a whole, that number is lower, at 66 percent.

The positive growth for the Nordic markets continues. In November, the number of overnight stays rose sharply by 20 percent, to reach 37,000. For all nationalities, including Iceland, the number of stays grew significantly. With just one month remaining in 2009, 525,000 overnight stays have been made at hotels, hostels and vacation villages in Stockholm County. That is 64,000 or 14 percent more than the same period last year.

Even non-Nordic visitors from Europe made more overnight stays that month than in November 2008. Here, the increase was by 4 percent. For the entire year, the variation compared with 2008 was very little. Some months entailed a slight increase, while others a notable decline compared to the previous year. Overall for the year through November, the number of overnight stays for this category of visitors was practically unchanged.

After a negative start in autumn, the number of stays made by non-European visitors visiting Stockholm began to grow once again. Just over 48,000 overnight stays in November equals 6 percent more than last year. The major contributing factor was that the US market showed growth (+ 3 percent) for the first time in 2009.

Trends in Sweden’s major cities For both Stockholm and Malmö, November was a more positive month than for Sweden overall. This is primarily true of the cities, while the surrounding regions underwent more moderate development. In Göteborg, the number of overnight stays stopped at just under last year’s level – a development in line with the development witnessed throughout much of Sweden.

With one month remaining in 2009, we can conclude that visitor numbers, measured in the number of overnight stays, were highest in Malmö and greater Malmö in 2009.

The average rate for a booked room – with just a month remaining in 2009 – was 6 percent lower than in 2008 in the county and 7 percent lower in the city.

Hotels’ total lodging revenue rose in November by 4 percent in the city, to SEK 381 million. In the county, revenue increased 2 percent, to SEK 535 million. The year overall, however, ends with lower revenue in the order of 10 percent.
