The Bemidji State soccer team begins a new campaign following a topsy-turvy season. The 2008 Beaver squad became the first team in school history to go undefeated in nonconference action (7-0), but a 5-7-1 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) saw the Beavers narrowly missing out on the NSIC Tournament, placing ninth out of 14 teams.

Bemidji State will look to rebound and earn one of the eight spots in the regular season-ending conference tourney. Numerous players will be called upon to step up and to make contributions this year. Despite losing five players from last year’s team, the green and white bring back top-to-bottom talent at every position and have added skilled players to make up for what was lost.

Bemidji State finished the year 12-7-1 tying the school record for most wins in a season. It was the fourth time in the last five years the team hit the double-digit win mark. Bemidji State also allowed just 19 goals, which tied the school record for least goals allowed in a season and the eight shutouts tied for second-most in school history.

The Beavers haven’t had a losing season since 2004 and they have had nine or more wins each of the last five years. Bemidji State placed second in the NSIC in both 2005 and 2006, and finished fifth in 2007.

Head coach Jim Stone is beginning his eighth year and he has brought in four freshmen and one junior college transfer to go along with 20 returnees.

The 2009 captains are forward Jamie Ford (Sr., Edina, Minn.) and defenders Maddie Pletta (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) and Linsey Olesiak (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.). Ford finished with 11 goals and five assists for 27 points. Her points were fifth most by a Beaver in a single season and her 11 goals are tied for fifth most in a single season. These three will look to provide experience and leadership to a talented squad.

Bemidji State returns five of the top six leading scorers from last season, including All-American outside mid/forward Ashlee Ellefsen (Jr., Hugo, Minn.). Ellefsen finished 2008 with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points. Her assists tied for the most by a Beaver in a single season in school history and her goals and points were both third-most in a single season by a Beaver. Ellefsen was also named a Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention and a Daktronics All-Region First Team member. She became the second player in school history (Kari Torgerson, 2005) to be named an All-American.

The combination of Ford and Ellefsen up front tallied 58 points, making them the highest-scoring tandem in school history. They narrowly edged out the 57 points put up by Katie Meinhardt (38) and Whitney Sengthao (19) in 2004. Ellefsen and Ford were both named to the All-NSIC Second Team.

Other double-digit scorers who return include forwards Jenny Stromberg (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) and Analey Skog (So., St. Francis, Minn.). Stromberg finished 2008 with six assists, which tied for fourth-most in a single season in school history. She also finished third on the team with her 12 points and tied for third with three goals. She set the school record for most assists in a single match with three against University of Wisconsin-Superior on Oct. 26. Skog notched three goals (tied for third most last season) and five assists (tied for third most) for 11 points (tied for fourth most).

Four players were lost from last season, including captains Kelly Hyvare and Katherine Wheeler. Lauren Olivares and Kelsey Robinson also played their finals games as Beavers.

Goalkeeper Samantha Ross (So., Stillwater, Minn.) will start the season in net for Bemidji State. She played in all but one game and made 18 starts last year in her first year as a full-time starter. She finished 2008 with a 0.97 goals against average and a .890 save percentage (sixth best in the country). Both marks were second-best in a single season in school history. She recorded three shutouts and finished with a 10-7-1 mark in 1490:34 of action. Her 10 wins were third-best in a single season in school history and she currently owns the record for lowest career goals against average at 1.05.

SCHEDULEThe 2009 schedule for the Beavers will provide many new opponents and tough tests week in and week out. Along with the difficulty that will come with one of the best conferences in the NCAA, Bemidji State will also play University of Wisconsin-Parkside (first-ever meeting), Cardinal Stritch University (first-ever meeting), Northwestern (IA) College (1-0 all-time), Dordt College (first-meeting), Jamestown College (5-5-2) and University of Wisconsin-Superior (4-0) in nonconference action. UW-Parkside finished last year ranked sixth in the country with an 18-1-2 mark.

“We’re excited to go down to Milwaukee,” said heach soccer coach Jim Stone. “This will be the first time our program has played Wisconsin-Parkside, one of the better teams in the country.”

“We’re also excited to go down to Iowa and play another team we’ve never played before in Dordt, “ Stone added. “They won their conference last year and it will help us get quality competition in our nonconference schedule.”

BSU will open its season Aug. 27-28 in Kenosha, Wis., where the Beavers will face UW-Parkside and Cardinal Stritch. Next on tap is a Sept. 4-5 trip through Iowa, as the Beavers face Northwestern and Dordt, followed by a nonconference tilt at University of Minnesota, Crookston. The first home game is set for Sept. 11 against Jamestown and the Beavers open NSIC action Sept. 19-20 against Minnesota State University, Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State University.

GOALKEEPERSRoss will enter the season as the starting goalkeeper and she will be looking to build off one of the greatest seasons by a BSU keeper in school history. She will be backed up Abby Kjonaas (So., Fargo, N.D.), who saw action in seven games during her rookie campaign. She recorded a 2-0 record and had one shutout in 356:14 of action. She finished 2008 with a 0.76 goals against average and had an .897 saves percentage. “We have really two quality goalkeepers,” Stone said. “They’re different and unique, and they both have their own strengths.”

“Abby Kjonaas has really grown as a goalkeeper and I think Samantha Ross is one of the better goalkeepers in our conference. We’re very fortunate to have both of them and I have complete confidence in our goalkeeping this year,” Stone added.

DEFENDERSOne of the biggest strengths for Bemidji State comes from the defense, as the team returns all four starters from a year ago. The leader on the backline is center back Alysha Domiano (Jr., Dayton, Minn.), who was named All-NSIC Honorable Mention for the second-straight year. Joining her in the middle will be captain Olesiak. The rotation at center back will also include Kelly Pointon (So., Woodbury, Minn.). Captain Pletta will be the starting right back and the left back position could belong to Kari McAllen (So., Fargo, N.D.), Kathryn Bjorge (So., Prior Lake, Minn.) or Kirsten Erickson (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.). Versatile Sara Dalton (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.) will also be in the mix.

“We have a good defensive unit. Our back line is really led by Alysha, she’s as good as it gets at this level or really any level,” Stone said. “She’s incredibly skilled and a very intelligent defender, and her leadership has really grown over the years.”

“We feel like we have a lot of strength in the back and a lot of depth which will give us a lot of options,” Stone said.

The depth of the backline will provide Stone with plenty of quality substitutes and he has added even more depth to one of the biggest strengths of the team. Newcomers Kara Annoni (Fr., Hermantown, Minn.) and Mallory Lowe (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) will look to provide help on defense.

MIDFIELDERSThere are plenty of options for starters at midfield this season, beginning with center mids Kim Sorteberg (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) and Kara Smyth (Jr., Cary, Ill.). Smyth led the team in assists her freshman year before a sophomore campaign that saw her record two goals and three assists for seven points. She currently has nine career assists, which is tied for 10th all-time in BSU history. Sorteberg recorded career-highs with four assists and six points last season. Also battling for playing time in the middle will be Rachel Gustafson (So., Ham Lake, Minn.) and newcomers Alex Petes (Fr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Tiffany VanHaaften (Fr., Chaska,

Minn.). The starter on the left side will be Bri Scanlan (So., East Grand Forks, Minn.), who capped off her rookie season with one goal and four assists for six points. The right side will be manned by either Stromberg (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) or Brianna Duff (So., Ramsey, Minn.). Stromberg notched three goals and six assists last season, finishing third on the team in scoring. She also broke the school record for assists in a single game with three against Wisconsin-Superior. Duff played in the middle last season but can play in either spot. She recorded three points last year.

“This year we have a lot of strength up the middle and we’re going to tailor our system to take advantage of the strength,” Stone said. “We feel like freshman Alex Petes will be able to help out and do some things for us right away. Kim Sorteberg and Kara Smyth will return and give us some good play in the middle. Also Tiffany VanHaaften will be able to help us out as a freshman.”

“In more of an attacking midfield position Yesenia Garcia (Jr., Great Bend, Kan.) will be looked uopn to really distribute the ball and to score goals herself,” Stone added.

FORWARDSThe starters up top in 2009 will be returning members of the All-NSIC Third Team Ford and Ellefsen. Ford will captain the Beavers after more than doubling her career-high in point production last season. She recorded 11 goals and five assists for 27 points, which was sixth best in the NSIC a year ago. Ellefsen is returning after putting together one of the most impressive seasons in school history. She finished third in the NSIC with 31 points (12 goals and seven assists) and she was named a Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention and a Daktronics All-Region First Team member. The dynamic duo will both be chasing BSU career scoring records this season. Ford is already in the top five in career goals, assists and points (21G, 11A, 53P) and Ellefsen is sixth in goals and points and tied for 10th in assists (19G, 9A, 47P).

However, Ford suffered a serious knee injury and it is not clear on how soon she will be able to get back in the lineup for the Beavers.

“The possible absence of Ford gives our other forwards the ability to step up and make big plays for our team this year,” Stone said. “We’re going to look a bit different up top this year than we have before in the past.”

“Ashlee Ellefsen is extremely special and a very good player when she is on top of her game. She’s fun to coach and difficult to defend,” Stone added.

Coach Stone said he also expects Bethany Fluto (So., Bemidji, Minn.) and junior college transfer Garcia to contribute up front for the Beavers.

BEMIDJI STATE UNIVERSITYWomen’s Soccer 2009

On July 23, 2002, Bemidji State University took an integral step toward developing a competitive women’s soccer program with the hiring of Jim Stone as head coach. The BSU soccer program had never won more than the four victories Stone’s squad achieved in 2002.

Stone has the highest win percentage in BSU history (.480), along with the most wins (51). He is the only coach in BSU soccer history with a record higher than .500 in conference play (.509).

The 2005 season was a record-breaking year for the Beavers. As a team BSU set or tied numerous records, including most wins (12) and most shutouts (10) in a season. The Beavers were also the 12th most improved team in the nation that year.

Under Stone’s guidance BSU has been well represented on the NSIC All-Conference teams and garnered its first ever All-American in 2005. Juniors Ashlee Ellefsen (Hugo, Minn.) and Alysha Domiano (Dayton, Minn.) both garnered postseason honors during their freshman campaigns, with Ellefsen being named to the All-NSIC Second Team and Domiano earning All-NSIC Honorable Mention honors. Ellefsen was then named All-NSIC Third Team, Daktronics First-Teal All-Region, and Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention in her sophomore year.

Former goalkeeper Kari Torgerson was named an NSCAA Second Team All-American, along with winning the NSIC Defensive Player of the Year award and being named to the first team All-Region squad in 2005 (2004 third team). Katie Meinhardt (2005 third team) and Tegan Moehn (2005 first team) have also been named to an NSCAA All-Region team during Stone’s tenure at BSU. Kelly Hyvare (Coon Rapids, Minn.) was named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team her freshman year, and was named to the All-NSIC First Team her sophomore year.

Domiano (2008 third team), Megan Wallner (2007 third team), Erin Foss (2005 second team) and Cristina Egnell (2004 third team, 2005 first team) have all been named to CoSIDA Academic All-District squads under Stone’s tutelage.

Before his arrival at BSU, Stone served as head girl’s varsity soccer coach at Spring Lake Park High School during fall 2001. He helped transform a team which went 3-16 the previous year to an 8-6-2 squad in just one season. He also coached in the Wings Soccer Club.
