The College offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Sciencedegrees, preparing students for direct entry into the world of business or

for further professional training in law, medi-cine, business, government, teaching, or the ministry. Basic to the success of its program is a dedicated faculty, over 90% of whom holdearneddoctoratesintheirfieldsandallof whom devote their principal energy to teaching. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1.

STUDENTS RUN THEIR OWN ACTIVITIESStudent life is considered an integral part of the education process at Hampden-Sydney. Students conduct their own affairs through a student government elected by them and composed of members of all classes.A student-enforced honor code is a Hampden-Sydney tradition that continues to flourish, upholding the atmosphere of personal integ-rity, trust, and mutual respect essential to the operation of a dynamic academic community. Responsibility for maintaining the system is taken so seriously that students enjoy one of the freest campuses in America, where books and bikes can be left unattended and profes-sors can leave their classrooms during tests and exams. Student activities are numerous and

diverse, including publication of a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine, and operation of a radio station andvolunteerfiredepartmentalong with a wide variety of clubs and other organiza-tions. Whether they like drama, music, classical debate, hiking, and canoeing, or even electronics and short waveradio, studentscanfindcampus organizations that cater to their interests. The social life of the College is centered around 11 national fra-ternities and a strong organization of independents. Concerts, mixers, movies, and a variety of unusual programs are planned and carried out through a student-run college activities committee.

Hampden-Sydney is one of the South’s outstanding liberal arts col-leges. Nestled in the gently rolling countryside of south-central Vir-ginia, H-SC is the oldest of the country’s few remaining men’s colleges. Hampden-Sydney is committed to the belief that a liberal arts education provides the best foundation not only for a profes-sional career, but also for the great moral and intellectual challenges of life. Students learn that the pursuit of truth is a lifelong endeavor, requiring clarity and objectivity of thought, a sensitive moral conscience, and a dedication to responsible citizenship. As the College’s mission statement says, liberal education aims to assist stu-dents to free themselves from ignorance, malice, prejudice, and superstition; from thetyrannyofintellectualselfishness;andfrom impotence in judging the claims and values of experts. It teaches students to gather evidence patiently; it educates them to write and speak with force, precision, and clarity; and it encourages them to seek refreshmentandinspirationinthefinearts.

ONE QUALITY REIGNS SUPREME: LEADERSHIPFrom the beginning, the College’s intent has been to educate the whole individual “in an atmosphere of sound learning.” The Col-lege’s history speaks elo-quently of the powerful and enduring character of the ideals of self-reliance and service, and of its own two-hundred years of commitment to the value of self-reliant, disciplined intellect in public life. In proportion to its enrollment, Hampden-Sydney consistently is in the topfive percent of allcolleges and universities in graduates listed in “Who’s Who in America.” Since 1776, the Col-lege has provided the educationalexperiencenecessarytoproduceleadersineveryfieldofendeavor, including one U.S. President, 12 senators, 32 congressmen, 12 governors, well over 100 state representatives, and a host of minis-ters, attorneys, doctors and judges.

Young Tigers Look to Return to the Top of the ODACWith 18 New Faces on the 2009 Roster, Hampden-Sydney Looks for a Fresh Start

The 2009 Tigers will most likely come into the season the underdogs of the ODAC, yet this team will have every opportunity to rise on the ODAC and national level with a schedule that includes seven teams ranked in the top 20 (LAXnews). The 2009 team returns nearly all of its starting of-fense supported by 11 sophomores and 18 freshmen. The team will be led by three verteran captains in seniors Doug Carpenter, Andrew Mahoney, and junior Kyle Jett. Luckily for the Tigers, the three captains were the three leading scorers in 2008. On the defensive end, with the graduation of All-Americans Colin Dunn and Alex Pritzlaff, the Tigers will look for its young stars to step up. Coach Rostan is excited to coach a talented core of young, enthusiastic and very athletic defensemen, supported by three evenly talented goalies.

The 2009 Tigers understand the highly competi-tive battle within the ODAC after coming off of itsfirstlosingseasonsince1993.Since1995,theTigers have won as many or more games than any team in the ODAC with a 70% winning re-cord. The 2009 team understands the Tiger tradi-tionandwillworktowardsafifthODACCham-pionship and an NCAA Tournament berth. ATTACKThe 2009 Tiger attack will be fully loaded and readytofireastheygraduatednostartingattack-men from 2008 and return one of the top attack-men in the ODAC with Andrew Mahoney. Last season, the junior was the third leading scorer with 14 goals and the top assist man with ten. Mahoney comes back this season a senior cap-tain, looking to lead the Tigers back to domi-nance. Joining him in the attack position will be a combination of several players that have looked good in preseason training. Senior Ken Mathi-son, a New York native, comes into his senior campaign coming off a career year in which he played in all 14 games, notching 11 goals in the process. Junior Kevin Coats has continued to im-prove each year, and will be looked upon to be a scoring threat in 2009. Four freshmen will immediately contribute on the attack. 6-foot-4, 190 pound Micah Keller has great size and athleticism and will most likely start. Ben Clarke, Nate Cundy, and Carter Mavromatis have shown great work ethic and savvy and will have an immediate impact in the Tiger of-fense. Juniors Harrison McCorkle and Hunter Phillips, along with sopho-more Lance Landvater, will continue to compete for playing time in the Tiger attack.

MIDFIELDER Themidfieldwillbejustasexplosiveandbalancedastheattack,astheTi-gersreturneveryoffensivemidfielderfrom2008alongwiththeadditionof several athletic freshmen. With the return of the top two scorers and Honorable Mention All-ODAC performers in 2008, Doug Carpenter and KyleJett, lookforthemidfieldtoberunningonallcylinders.Carpenter’s

savvy and stick skills have proven to be lethal as he is coming off a career year in which he lead the team in goals with 24, was second in assists with eight, and lead the team with 32 total points. Junior captain Kyle Jett returns as the Tiger’s second leading scorer in 2008 with 23 goals. Jett has a lethal combination of speed, athleticism, and a great sense of the game, and has worked hard to be a leader. Look for Carpenter and Jett to formoneofthebestmidfieldtandemsinDivisionIII.Twootherjuniors,Andrew O’Shea and Thomas Hovis, will also be major factors in the Ti-germidfield.O’Shea,whoisnotonlyascoringthreat,butisalsoagreat

distributor and creator. In 2008, he tallied nine goals and was second on the team with nine as-sists. Hovis, also the starting linebacker for the Tiger football team, brings a tough, physical game to theTigermidfield.Twosophomores,Cole Hawthorne and Dudley Locke, have im-proved their games greatly in the offseason and will look to have major roles for the Tigers this season. Hawthorne has looked extremely quick andconfidentafterscoringfivegoalsasafresh-man; he will be a major contributor on the Ti-ger’sfirstmidfieldlinein2009andisoneoftheup-and-comingmidfieldersintheODAC.Dan-iel Deck, Jon Kilbourn, and Carter Mavromatis bring both speed and an offensive sense, and will contribute right away on the Tiger’s top twomidfield lines.SeniorTeddySchwabwillalso compete for an increased offensive role as anelderstatesmanontheTigermidfield.

With the graduation of defensive short-stick midfielderKyleFrazier, theTigerswillturntosophomore Jake McDonald. At 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, McDonald has great size and speed for the position and has greatly improved his game, hoping to be a lock down short-stick defender inthemidfield.JuniorMarioWashingtonwilluse his quickness to compete as a face-off wingman/defensivemidfielder.

At the face-off “X” spot, the Tigers will look to face-off specialists junior Whit Kelley and sophomore Bill Tunney to take most of the load. Kelley will return in 2009 after being sidelined for most of 2008 with a shoulder injury. In his six games last season, he won 17 of his 40 face-offs (.425). In his freshman season, he won an impressive 78 of his 141 attempts (.553). When Kelley went down last season, the Tigers turned to then-freshman Bill Tunney. He did an excellent job, not letting the level of play drop, as he won 72 of his 155 face-offs (.465). Both Kelley and Tunney are tough, gritty players who will be key to the Tiger’s success.

DEFENSEWith the graduation of nearly the entire defense of 2008, including All-Americans Colin Dunn and Alex Pritzlaff, the Tigers will have many new faces in 2009. Junior Daniel Martin returns with experience and athleti-cism after proving himself as a lockdown defender in 2008. Martin will

(L to R): Seniors Andrew Mahoney, Kenny Mathison, and Teddy Schwab. These seniors, along with Carpen-ter will look to lead the young Tigers of 2009 back to prominence. In 2008, Mahoney, Mathison and Carpen-ter combined to score 49 of the team’s 129 goals. With all five seniors returning to the Tiger offense, look for a balanced attack in 2009.

be looked upon to lead the young defense and mark opposing team’s best attackmen. Joining Martin will be sophomores Peter Foley and Tim Van-Benthuysen. Both Foley and VanBenthuysen are tough, physical defend-erswhogainedawealthofknowledgeandunderstandingintheirfirstyearon a collegiate team. These three will also receive help from a freshman with a familiar name to Tiger lacrosse fans: Andrew Pritzlaff. A quick and talented defenseman, Pritzlaff will look to compete to make an immedi-ateimpactonthefieldfortheTigers.JuniorFrankieMcGuireandfresh-man Jack Gibson are both smart defenders with the ability to take the ball away; both should push for playing time in 2009.

GOALIESWith the graduation of starting keeper Phil Hage, there will be a three way battle for the starting nod in 2009 between junior Mark Bagby, sophomore Ben Hansell, and freshman Morrow Boggs. All three net minders have proven to be very capable, talented goalies who each could start between the pipes on Feb. 21.

2009 SCHEDULEThe 2009 schedule for Hampden-Sydney is certainly not an easy one. Hampden-Sydney faces seven teams listed in LAXnew’s preseason Top 25. The Tigers will open up their schedule at home facing the University of Mary Washington on Feb. 21.

Just three days later, on the 24th, the Tigers will head to Lynchburg, VA tofacetheRandolphCollegeWildcatsfortheveryfirsttime.Randolph, formerly Randolph-Macon Women’s College, is coached by former Hampden-Sydney All-American Scott Ketcham. Though Randolph is in

the ODAC on the women’s side, the men will not join the conference until 2010 for lacrosse, so it will not count as an ODAC game.

Before February is over, the Tigers will travel to Gettysburg, PA to face the No. 2 Gettysburg College on the 28th. After getting a week to prepare, Hampden-Sydney will return home to face Marymount College on March 7. In the middle of March, the Tigers will look at arguably the toughest part of an already hard schedule. On March 11, they will face the No. 8 Shore-men of Washington College. Though the two teams have not met since 2005, this has been a rivalry game as both teams have been storied, suc-cessful programs throughout the years. The Tigers will then hit the road on the 14th to play No. 3 Cabrini College. This young lacrosse program has been quick to become a national power and will be a big test for the young Tigers. Hampden-Sydney will stay on the road for one more game as they face No. 13 Haverford College at a neutral site in the Washington DC area.

The Tigers will then return home at the end of March to begin confer-ence play as they will face the Guilford Quakers on March 28. They will then face arch-rival Randolph-Macon on April 1, this year at Hampden-Sydney. The schedule does not let up in April, as the Tigers travel to No. 10 Roanoke on the 4. Though the Tigers return home on the 8th to face Greensboro College, they go back on the road for a two game stretch travelling to Virginia Wesleyan on the 11th and No. 6 Lynchburg College onthe15th.Hampden-Sydneywillfinishouttheregularseasonathome,facing the No. 14 Generals of Washington and Lee and then the Captains of Christopher Newport on the 21st.

The top four teams in the ODAC will then advance to the conference tournamentwiththefirstroundbeingplayeronApril25,thesemi-finalson the 29th, and the Championship game on May 3. The winner of the conference will then advance to the NCAA Tournament and have a chance to play on May 24 at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts for a National Championship.

2008 Recap: Tigers Hang Tough All SeasonThe Tigers had a roller coaster year in 2008 experiencing the program’s firstlosingseasonsince1993andonlyitssecondsince1983.TheTigersshowed grit in only a one-goal loss to the eventual ODAC Champions and had an exciting overtime victory over the 2006 and 2007 Champions, yet performed inconsistently in many games throughout the season. Offen-sively it proved to be a rebuilding year as 2007 graduated All-American midfielders Ryan Harrington and Thomas Jennings. The Tiger offensewas very young with only one senior veteran in co-captain Joe Daugh-erty(Charlottesville,VA/St.Anne’s-Belfield).Theyoungoffensewouldlook heavily to the veteran defense, under the leadership of seniors Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling), Alex Pritzlaff (Castle Rock, CO/Kent Denver), Ian York (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield),WillAshwell(Warrenton,VA/NotreDame Academy) to guide them. Senior goalie Phil Hage (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy) was a first-year starter between the pipes.

Inthefirstgameoftheseason, itwasadefensivebattlethat the Tigers dominated, giving up just two goals in the 5-2 win over the University of Mary Washington. With the 1-0 start to the season, the Tigers then faced theirfirstofmanytoughteststhroughouttheseasonwith the No. 2 Gettysburg Bullets. Though the Bul-lets prevailed 13-5, the Tigers bounced back quickly defeating Christopher Newport 17-9.

Hampden-Sydney took a tough three game losing streak, facing two top ten teams, Cabrini and Hav-erford, along the way. The Tiger bounced back yet again, winning back to back games against Messiah and Greensboro. The two wins came at a great time as they were the last two games before conference play began.

The Tigers were being lead offensively by their recent hot hands, junior Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul’s) and sophomore Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanes-mond Suffolk), who accounted for 17 of the Tigers’ 37 goals in the four game stretch leading into ODAC play.

The Tigers battled the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins in the first ODACcontest. Though the result was a 9-7 loss, Hampden-Sydney fought the wholegame.Theyfell3-0inthefirstperiod,butCarpenterandJettcon-tinued to score, keeping their team in the game as he brought the score to 3-2. Though the Marlins would later make a run putting the score at 7-3, Hampden-Sydney never gave up, and rallied outscore the Marlins 4-2 in thefinalstretch, butwouldultimatelyfallshort.

AstheTigersputtheirfirstconferencelossbehindthem, theytravelledtoGuilford College, to yet again bounce back from a tough loss, beating the Quakers 14-7 while being lead by senior Robbie Thomas (Latham, NY/Trinity Pawling) who notched three goals.

With momentum on their side, Hampden-Sydney felt ready for a big test in the Maroons of Roanoke College. In a back and forth battle, the Tigers

found themselves down 12-10 with under four minutes to play in regula-tion. Senior Mark Miller (Esmont, VA/Monticello) cut the lead to one with just minutes to play. Carpenter then would score the equalizer with 0.7 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime. Not wanting to lose to his rival, Colin Dunn scored an incredible behind-the-head goal minutes into overtime to give the Tigers the victory in one of the most exciting games in recent years.

Hampden-Sydney put seven players on the All-ODAC squad. Senior defensemen Colin Dunn and Alex Pritzlaff received first team honors. Dunn, afour-time first team All-ODAC selection, provedto be one of the best long-pole defensemen on the national level. In 2008, Dunn scooped up 66 ground balls, scored six goals, and tallie four assists. Alex Pritzlaff, another two-time All-American, had a tre-mendous year shadowing the opponents’ top attack-man in nearly every game. Pritzlaff won 46 ground-balls while keeping all opponents to a total of eight goals for the entire season.

Senior defenseman Ian York earned second team honors. York, a staple in the Tiger defense had great size and speed to lock down his man. An incredibly dependable defenseman, York managed to grab 35 groundballs while adding two assists.

Seniors Kyle Frazier (Forest, VA/Virginia Episcopal) and Will Ashwell along with junior Doug Carpenter and sophomore Kyle Jettearnedhonorablementionaccolades.Adefensivemidfielder,Fraziermanaged to scoop 42 groundballs while adding two goals and an assist. Ashwell, rounding out the talented defense, picked up 19 groundballs as well as a goal. Carpenter was the Tigers’ go-to-guy on offense tallying a team high 24 goals as well as eight assists. The young Kyle Jett was not far behind as he racked up 23 goals and four assists.
