Dear parents/carers, colleagues, students (present and past) and friends of the school. I am writing to ask for your help with a project to improve the school’s resources over the next twelve months. The following outlines the background to the project and some possible ways in which you could help. I would like to think that everyone associated with the school in any capacity, present or past, will give serious consideration to contributing to the learning opportunities of the current students and many future generations to come. We are always looking to improve learning opportunities at school by developing building resources. When it opened in 1963 (consisting then of the A, B and C corridor classrooms, hall, dining hall - now library - and gymnasium), the school was designed for just 300 students. Now there are almost 1000. Over time the building facilities have been added to and, most recently we have seen a new maths block, arts college developments, refurbishment of two science labs, the library and the sports hall and changing facilities. We are now looking to improve facilities further by replacing the mobile classroom facilities and with brick built sixth form accommodation which we hope will benefit everyone in the school and also be a resource that may become bookable for evening lettings. We have been offered some Diocesan funding totaling £300,000 as long as we can get a building project commissioned and underway by the end of this financial year. We have had plans drawn up but it is likely that the accommodation that we are seeking to provide would cost in excess of £400,000. Whilst we have some reserve capital we estimate that we need to raise an additional £90,000 over the next ten months to secure the project and the Diocesan funding.

BUILDING APPEAL NEWSLETTER We need your help!!

“Your education is your life; guard it well.” (Proverbs 4:13)

Whilst this seems an incredible sum to have to find, we realise that it is an opportunity we must not miss for, in the present climate, who knows when such an opportunity might arise again? Dividing the sum to be raised between all the present members of the school community and many generations of previous families immediately makes the sum more palatable and even more so when divided further into ten monthly chunks. For example, 2,000 people contributing £4.50 per month for ten months would generate £90K!

I have spoken to current students in assembly and there appears to be an overwhelming commitment to making this happen ..... but we need as much help as possible. It would be really great to have something to celebrate at the end of this financial year by way of a new teaching and learning resource to replace the dilapidated mobiles. We have lots of fundraising ideas, ranging from mufti days to special events to selling ‘bricks’ but major fundraising is best secured by short term standing order commitments. This is even more lucrative when ‘gift-aided’ by tax payers and the school can reclaim tax paid on these contributions to the tune of an extra 28p from the Inland Revenue for every £1 donated. To this end, I should be very grateful, if you would consider making such a pledge at the outset for a period of ten months. The first 300 donations/pledges received by 30th September will be entered into a prize draw to lay the foundation stone for the building. With the time scale being very short - just ten months - we plan to keep the campaign very high profile with further newsletters and information on our website to let you know how we are progressing towards our target. If you would like to help please complete, detach and return the form opposite and (if appropriate) a single donation or the attached standing order mandate - in a sealed envelope marked ‘BWH building appeal’ and for my attention via the school office. Every contribution helps and we are very grateful for your support which will be fully acknowledged unless you specifically ask that it be made anonymously. An example of how to complete the standing order mandate is provided on the back page of this newsletter. If you are party to any body which you think may be able to help (eg. trade, charitable trust) then please make contact with the school with a view to assisting further with the project. Thank you on behalf of everyone associated with the school. I sincerely hope that I will shortly be able to welcome you to the dedication of new facilities at school and celebrate a very successful campaign with your support. Yours faithfully, Nigel Dudley,

“Your education is your life; guard it well.” (Proverbs 4:13)
