DESCRIPTION

HTML5 is fast emerging as the industry standard for building rich interfaces. However, not all browsers support it consistently. With Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod devices choosing HTML5 over Adobe Flash, HTML5 has the potential to become very important in all the upcoming classes of portable devices. What does HTML5 mean for eLearning developers and tool makers, and does it have a role to play in mLearning?

What is HTML5?

• New standard of HTML from the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

• Supports new tags that enable rich user experience• Tags to support multimedia content

• <video>• <audio>• <canvas>

• Tags to improve semantic richness of documents• <section>• <article>• <header>

Which browsers support HTML5?• Currently supported by many desktop browsers except Internet

Explorer 7 & 8• Existing browser support is inconsistent

• HTML5 is an emerging standard• Mozilla FireFox, Google Chrome and Apple Safari support HTML5 to

varying degrees• Internet Explorer 9 to support HTML5

• To release later in 2011• IE 9 Beta is available for download

What devices support HTML5?

• iPhone & iPad support HTML5• Android supports HTML5• Traditional mobile handsets did not support even HTML too

well• Increasing number of mobile device manufacturers are

adopting Android• Hence HTML5 is making it to mobile devices very quickly

Where can HTML5 be used?

• Once more browsers and devices come onboard, HTML5 will be used for many things

• SEO-friendly rich websites for desktops and mobiles• Web-based applications will have HTML5• Many apps for mobile (iPhone apps, iPad apps, Android

apps) will be written in HTML5

Where can HTML5 be used?

• A lot of web content currently in HTML can move to HTML5• Video and audio• Articles, White papers & eBooks (It doesn’t have to be

just PDF anymore!)• In e-Learning:• On-the-field training (Mobile learning)• Edumercials• SCORM can be supported in HTML5 using JavaScript

Can I Create HTML5 like I Create HTML?

• Yes and No!• HTML5 is just a markup with additional tags, so YES, you can

write HTML5 like you write HTML• BUT• Common misconception is that “HTML5 automatically

supports animation etc.”• Animations are usually supported through CSS3 and use

of JavaScript• Real power of HTML5 is unleashed when it is used along

with CSS3 and JavaScript

Challenges for HTML5 adoption in eLearning

• Adobe Flash will be the dominant medium for eLearning content for a while• A lot of eLearning content is written in Flash and will

remain that way• A lot of Flash programmers work on creating eLearning

courses• Web developers will adopt HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript

combination, but they are not necessarily content developers

How can I create HTML5?

• There are tools available today using which you can create HTML5 elements and interactions• Adobe added support for HTML5 creation in

Dreamweaver in mid-2010• Raptivity (raptivity.com) supports creation of some

interactivities in HTML5• SiteJazzer (sitejazzer.com) helps create HTML5 using

some templates and no programming• Lectora announced that it will support HTML5 soon

(only Ogg format is supported)• HTML5 only supports limited audio formats

(Ogg, MP3, WAV)• HTML5 support on browsers is inconsistent at best
