Hymn: TiS 203
1. Fairest Lord Jesus,
Lord of all creation,
Son of God, and Mary’s son:
you will I cherish,
you will I honour,
you are my soul’s delight and crown.
2. Fair are the meadows,
fairer still the woodlands
robed in the greenness and bloom of
spring:
Jesus is fairer,
Jesus is purer,
he makes the saddest heart to sing.
3. Fair are the flowers,
fairer still the children
in all the freshness of youth arrayed;
yet is their beauty
fading and fleeting;
Lord Jesus, yours will never fade.
4. Fair is the moonlight,
fairer still the sunshine,
fair is the shimmering starry sky:
Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines clearer
than all the heavenly host on high.
5. Jesus, all beauty,
heavenly and earthly,
in you is wondrously found to be;
none can be nearer,
fairer or dearer
than you, my Saviour, are to me.
Anon., Münster 1677
tr. Joseph Augustus Seiss 1823–1904 and
others
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and
trust shall be your strength. Isaiah 30.16
3
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
Kyrie eleison (Kew Setting)
4
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant)
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
5
Prayer of the Day
Eternal God, you draw near to us in Christ and make yourself our guest:
amid the cares of our daily lives, make us attentive to your voice and
alert to your presence, that we may treasure your word above all else.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns
with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: Amos 8.1-8
1 This is what the Lord God showed me—a basket of summer fruit.
2 He said,
‘Amos, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘A basket of summer fruit.’ Then the
Lord said to me, ‘The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again
pass them by. 3 The songs of the temple shall become wailings on that day,’
says the Lord God; ‘the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in every place.
Be silent!’ 4 Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the
poor of the land, 5 saying, ‘When will the new moon be over so that we may
sell grain; and the Sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will
make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practise deceit with false
balances, 6 buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and
selling the sweepings of the wheat.’ 7 The Lord has sworn by the pride of
Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. 8 Shall not the land
tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise
like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
7
Psalm: 52:1-8
1 Why, you that are powerful, do you boast all the day long:
of mischief done to those that are faithful to God? 2 You contrive destroying slanders:
your tongue is like a sharpened razor,
it cuts deceitfully. 3 You have loved evil, and not good:
to tell lies, rather than to speak the truth. 4 You love all words that may do hurt:
and every deceit of the tongue. 5 But God will destroy you utterly:
he will snatch you away
and pluck you out of your dwelling,
he will uproot you from the land of the living. 6 The righteous shall see it, and fear:
they shall laugh you to scorn, and say, 7 ‘Here is one who did not take God for strength:
but trusted to the abundance of riches,
and found strength in slander.’ 8 As for me, I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God:
I will trust in the goodness of God for ever and ever.
8
Second Reading: Colossians 1.15-23
15
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16
for in
him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have
been created through him and for him. 17
He himself is before all things, and
in him all things hold together. 18
He is the head of the body, the church; he
is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have
first place in everything. 19
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to
dwell, 20
and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things,
whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his
cross. 21
And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil
deeds, 22
he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to
present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him— 23
provided
that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without
shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has
been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant
of this gospel.
Response:Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 448
1. Blest are the pure in heart,
for they shall see our God;
the secret of the Lord is theirs,
their soul is Christ’s abode.
2. The Lord who left the heavens
our life and peace to bring,
to dwell with us in lowliness,
our pattern and our King:
3. still to the lowly soul
he will himself impart,
and for his cradle and his throne
chooses the pure in heart.
4. Lord, we your presence seek;
this blessing now renew:
give us a pure and lowly heart,
a temple fit for you.
John Keble
1792–1866
(vv. 1,3) and others

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we
greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 10
beginning at the 38th
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
38
Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a
woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39
She had a sister
named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was
saying. 40
But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him
and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the
work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ 41
But the Lord answered her,
‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; 42
there is
need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be
taken away from her.’
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
12

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
Offertory Hymn: TiS 547
1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,
naught be all else to me, save that thou art
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
2. Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father, thy child let me be;
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.
3. Be thou my armour, my sword for the fight,
be thou my dignity, thou my delight;
thou my soul’s shelter and thou my high tower;
raise thou me heaven ward, O Power of my power.
4. Riches I scorn and the world’s empty praise,
thou my inheritance, now and always:
thou and thou only the first in my heart;
high King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
5. High King of heaven, after victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O ruler of all.

He lives, he lives, who once was dead;

he lives, to plead for me above;
he lives my hungry soul to feed;
he lives to help in time of need.
3. He lives, and grants me daily breath;
he lives, and I shall conquer death;
he lives, my mansion to prepare;
he lives, to lead me safely there.

what joy the blest assurance gives,
I know that my Redeemer lives!
