please, no aaaawws... this is my life.“Family man” ???

Fulfilling my Darwinian Destiny by passing on my genes?

Conforming to the norm of society going for the kids, the house, the car, the vcr?

Committing to the group to ensure that others value me and what I do?

Projecting all of my unfulfilled dreams onto my children, who will, in the end, either please me or disappoint me?

Claiming status in society?

BIG themes in social science

• Nature VS. Nurture – environment vs. genes• Gender & Race – how does that impact us?• Disfunction – what if we don’t fit in?• Control – are we in control of our destiny?• Happiness, Self-Esteem, Success – How are

they achieved? Lottery?

•5 tips to the social sciences

Page 7: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

#1: The sooner you have an opinion, the better

... Seems like a feel good statement ...* If you asked this guy about urban poverty, he’d likely say that people’s choices put them there. Then he’d create a beautiful research essay, and get a 90%, because he found lots of other people’s research that say the same thing as his opinion, quoted it, then wrote in his own ideas.

Page 8: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

The sooner you have an opinion, the better (the flip side)

Well ... If you were of the opinion that poverty is a systemic problem, this guy would be not right, in your mind. If you were the teacher, you’d have given his research a 55% (not really ).

On the other hand, Sociological Theorists, such as Emile Durkheim, and Karl Marx would say that society creates poverty, and it’s just a part of how things work when we have social classes.

# 2 – Apply, not regurgitate (vomit)

• Every good piece of writing has quotes from authors, textbooks, websites, journal articles

BUT• If you don’t take other people’s theories and

information and use it to form your own opinion, then you might as well copy and paste from the first website that comes up on google.

Page 10: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

#3 – Read the book & use the Wiki

• I’m as guilty as the next guy who got through high school reading as little as possible.

However ... • The moment that I found greater success

in school, was the moment I actually “read the book.” One other thing helped me a lot ... go ahead and ask...

#4 – Listen & Watch

• To enjoy this course, and to enjoy feeling a bit like a social scientist, you’ll need to:

LISTEN – TO ME. To conversations around you. To the radio/TV news and advertisements. To what comes out of your mouth, your friends mouths, your mom and dad’s mouths.

WATCH – ME (??). Watch interactions in the hallways, facial expressions, gestures. Watch for the norms and values of people in the way they interact with others. Q: Are those guys fighting?

Page 12: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

I was in Toronto, on the Subway, reading the Ads. When lo and behold, I saw this beauty. It screamed, ``take a picture of me! I`m ridiculous!``

The day I returned to Ottawa, I heard on the radio that this picture was being removed from all public places, and a formal apology was being written by the Toronto Argonauts marketing team. What were they thinking???

#5 – Participate in Discussion.

• I take note of this and include it as participation marks. When it comes down to you getting a 65 or a 70 … you’ll want to have some thoughtful participation on your side.

#5 cont’d

Yes, we all wear “masks.” We mostly have no problem with it because we enjoy doing what’s expected of us culturally. Guys enjoy throwing another cheap shot in on their friend after a teacher tells them to stop ‘horsing around.’ Girls enjoy saying nasty comments about the teacher in the bathroom. And we don’t feel bad about it ... That’s what we’re expected to do ... Culturally ...

Page 15: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

# 5 cont’d• Everything you do has a purpose. Because we

all think differently, others may not understand your purpose. For example, you may go to MacDonalds at 1:30am on a school night.

Your mom’s interpretation – ‘she’s probably on drugs!!!’

Your purpose – to feel independent and be someone who does this type of thing ...

3 Things to get along with me

Page 17: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

• 1) Honesty. I’d actually prefer you tell me that you were at the plaza and wanted to stay there instead of being on time. I will still scold you and perhaps call your parents and school administration. After all, no teacher is ever truly fooled.

• Doesn’t it just feel better to be honest?

Page 18: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

2) Effort• I have a lot of patience for

people who need help. I will help you, always.

• I do not have a lot of patience for people who don’t try. Oh yes, they need help. But it’s like trying to toilet train a monkey that would rather throw it’s poop away.

Page 19: HSP3M – Intro to Social Sciences Mr. Tarrant. Me, Mr. T Education – B.A.H. from the University of Guelph (Awesome place), Major in Sociology (with lots

#3 - Product

• Your effort, planning, self-esteem, and personal goals effect your product.
