A Guide to the SEE Program

Welcome! Your school district has enrolled in the IU 13 Student Enrichment Experience (SEE) Program for gifted students. The following guidelines apply to all districts enrolled. Please do not attempt to register your son or daughter for a seminar directly through the IU. Contact your district’s appointed SEE contact teacher to sign up. REGISTRATION

• Enrollment in each seminar is limited depending on class size preferences of the presenter or room capacity. • Adherence to registration deadline is required. Early registration is encouraged. • Attendance is taken at all seminars, and schools are notified of those not accounted for. Therefore, it is important that

teachers notify the IU of any changes in enrollment before bus departure time. Kindly follow your school’s procedures for parent permission slips. IU 13 permission slips and photo releases are also requested. TRANSPORTATION Transportation to the IU 13 building in your county is at the discretion of your district. IU 13 provides transportation to seminars off-site. PLEASE BE PROMPT! The IU 13 bus cannot keep the group waiting more than five minutes for latecomers. CHAPERONES All SEE Seminars are supervised by the SEE Program Coordinator and IU 13 certified substitutes. Students are always fully supervised on the bus or on field trips off-site. LEAVING EARLY Students need permission in advance from a parent or teacher to leave a seminar before it closes. LUNCH For seminars that end at noon, lunch arrangements are “on your own.” Students may bring a bag lunch to eat on the way back to school. For seminars that extend into the afternoon, lunch arrangements are specified on flyers. WEATHER CANCELLATIONS Seminars are cancelled/postponed for snow/ice if more than two participating schools are delayed or cancelled. Outdoor seminars may specify a rain date. Check the website, www.iu13.org for cancellation information. Emails will also be sent to participating schools. Which SEE topics shall we choose?

• While students should not be forced into a SEE Seminar that holds no interest for them, parents and teachers are encouraged to apply some guidance in choosing topics. SEE Seminars are usually fun, yet they should not be regarded as a “day off from school.” The purpose of the SEE is to offer a learning experience that challenges the imagination, the problem solving skills, and the perspectives of 4th to 12th graders. The seminars are especially valuable as a safe place to dabble in new interests and explore various careers.

• Expect “enrichment” from the SEE Program. It cannot provide the depth of an advanced placement college course in a one day experience. However, a SEE seminar offers a great opportunity to explore special interests and extend the curriculum.

• In some cases a seminar does not allow for more than two students to attend per group. Since it is difficult for students to venture into a group of strangers, we do our best to plan activities to give them a chance to make new acquaintances.

• Many students comment that the opportunity to meet students from other schools is the “best thing about SEE Seminars.” • Some seminars are reruns from previous years. We discourage students from applying for the same seminars they have

attended before.
