The Hilo Photography Club is a photography club based on the Big Island of Hawai’i, and has been meeting monthly since 1978. Our members all have a common interest in photography and in sharing their craft/profession/hobby with others. Skills range from novice to professional. We currently have around 50 members from all parts of the Big Island.

The club holds a meeting every month in Hilo. In addition to a business meeting, we often have demonstrations, slide shows from members or invited photographers, invited lectures, in-club photo contests and exhibits, discussions about upcoming contests, photographic technique, technology, equipment, digital manipulation, darkroom, etc. This monthly meeting is usually the 3rd Wednesday of the month, at 7 p.m, at the Kamana Senior Center on Kamana St. in Hilo Google Map.

Notes from the Second BananaSteve Godszak

“Character, like a photograph, develops in darkness.”

- Yousef Karsh

Happy New Year to one and all! Here's hoping that 2010 will be a much better year overall than 2009. On a personal note, I plan on being much more careful and watchful when I'm out and about photographing. While in Arizona for the holidays I had another disaster and broke another lens. That's 2 in 2 years! And it's due to my inattentiveness.

Thus, my New Year's resolution is to be more attentive (should have seen that basketball headed towards me) to my surroundings and carefully placing (who knew that gust of wind was forthcoming) and securing my equipment.

So I'm shopping which brings me to the crux of this piece. December 2009 Consumer Reports contains the latest camera and lens ratings for those of us shopping for new equipment. The current ratings show Nikon, Olympus, and Canon on top, but I am confused by their placement of Nikon's D90 in the Basic category. It certainly seems pretty Advanced to me. Anyway, they've selected several cameras and lens as Best Buys so if you're shopping, there's another source to review. And cheers for any and all after-the-holidays sales!

2010 is the year of the Tiger....great!

Steve

Aloha and Happy New Year to everyone!

It truly feels as if this will be a banner year as we shed the past and look towards a brighter future. With this in mind the newsletter could use more articles on or about photography. Do you have a particular passion or expertise? Make it a New Year's resolution to write one. Let me know if you need help and we can assist you in numerous ways.

Over time there have been numerous nice comments made about the newsletter however a huge amount of the credit is due Mary Goodrich. If it weren't for Mary's undying devotion and contributions I would be lost. She is an angel.

For those who missed it, Doug Halsted's tripod presentation is up on the website.

Bill Irwin - Traveling the Fiesta Trail

Our January 20th meeting will feature Bill Irwin who will present his colorful images from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. This will be an exciting historical and cultural slideshow that Bill calls “Traveling the Fiesta Trail”.

Page 7: HPC - January 2010

He will discuss some of the problems he encountered in covering the event and using photography to tell a narrative story about events such as the Fiestas. Bill will be pointing out historical connections and how they relate to the present day cultural situation in Mexico.

Bill has been to San Miguel many times and he does speak some Spanish. He has some academic training in Mexican history and studied Mexican archaeology, ethnology and culture. This promises to be an HPC night to remember

– Bill Irwin is an exceptional photographer with a keen eye for excellent composition, color and dynamic imagery.

Member's Choice will be Joy San Buenaventura. She will show photos from her recent trip to Egypt, Jordan and Israel.

Review of Membership Meeting November 18, 2009

President Doug Halsted opened the meeting with a few announcements about upcoming events, shows to see, and a possible portrait project for HPC members.

We are planning to approach Kamana Center about doing free portrait photographs of some of the elders who use the Center. For anyone who wants to learn more about portraiture, including using lighting, backgrounds and posing the individual, this could be a golden opportunity!

In January, we will send out a Yahoo notice of an informal meeting so we can see how much interest there is and what the next steps are. President Doug, Mary and Ken Goodrich, Anubhav Agarwal and Ben Gaddis have all expressed a desire to be involved in this project. If you would like to be included, please contact Doug at [email protected] or Mary [email protected].

The proposed meeting with the FILM Club members has been postponed. We hope to be able to have them attend one of our meetings in the coming year.

Check out www.hiartmagazine.com for their new updated calendar that includes art and photography exhibits on all islands.

Steve Godzsak gave a review of the events of the CCCH outing on November 6th and 7th. HPC volunteers arranged an unforgettable experience for the visiting members of Maui Camera Club and the Hawaii Photographic Society from Oahu. The highlights included the opening of the Allen Tarleton Exhibit at Keaau Fine Arts Center, Black & White Night in Hilo, the opening of the EHCC Spring Arts Festival, a lava boat tour and excursion to Waipio Valley. They also had an opportunity to shoot in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Steve G. brought returned work from the Hilo Hospital exhibit. The Hospital would welcome more pieces, especially large ones. Contact Steve: [email protected] or Chris: [email protected].

files.

March 6th: Public reception, 6pm - 9pm @ Keaau Fine Art Center. Exhibit will be open until March 26th, then:

March - April 2010: Oahu exhibition: To be confirmed, we have several venues as possibilities currently.

PHOTO EXPO 2010Andrew Bisset announced that the deadline for Expo entries will be earlier this year. Expo is changing to a new process of selection. Entries can be submitted digitally for pre-judging. These will then be culled down to about 150 images and selected photographers will be invited to show their finished work. This will benefit the photographers because only selected works will need to be framed thus saving a lot of money on matting and framing. Look for more information on the Expo website or in this newsletter in the coming months. www.hawaiiphotoexpo.com

Meeting ProgramDoug Halsted presented a mini-workshop on Tripods 101 and handed out some helpful information. He demonstrated the proper use of tripods, why you should use one and choosing the right one for you and your photography.

Ken Goodrich followed this with a brief slideshow on different kinds of tripod heads and the criteria for purchasing a tripod.

Bob Douglas did a mini-workshop on how to clean your sensor with Eclipse and swabs. You can clean the sensor yourself or have it done by a professional. Bob recommends using a loupe with a light in it so it is easier to see. These are available through B&H for about $80. Maybe if 10 of us order them, we can get a discount – contact Bob at [email protected] if you are interested.

Member’s Choice tonight featured two photographers. First we saw the work of Anubhav Agarwal who does amazingly well with the difficult task of close-up photos of insects such as moths, spiders and grasshoppers. His other subjects included scenes of Antietam and Imiloa. A second slideshow was given by Antonio Chrysostomou. Antonio enjoys experimenting with his camera using random movement, etc. He explores lines, contrasts, rhythms and repeating shapes as well as portraits. There were some great shots of the telescopes where he works showing the abstraction in geometric structure.

Thanks to both of these photographers for sharing their work! If you would like to share yours, please contact Steve at [email protected].

Mahalo to Ken for organizing yet another awesome outing. And a big mahalo to Steve Clark for sharing these wonderful images. Apparently the weather was not your typical sun drenched Waimea but nonetheless as a true photographer they persevered.
