Monitoring with SAP Solution Manager
• SAP Solution Manager provides centralized, real-time monitoring of SAP systems, business processes, and interfaces
Proactive monitoring helps to avoid critical situations while automatic alerting/notification provides fast response to issues
4
What SAP Solution Manager Offers
• Centralized monitoringLarge landscapes can be centrally monitored at a low total cost of operation
• Full scalability for monitoringLandscapes with only a few components to a large number of components can be efficiently monitoredIncludes any type of SAP landscape
5
What SAP Solution Manager Offers (cont.)
• Productive monitoring with alertsNo administrative activity is required except in case of alertsAlert notifications (email, SMS, etc.) can be triggered automatically
• Assisted/guided problem detection and resolutionFrom the system, administrators can drill down to a monitored component and remove the cause of an alert using predefined analysis functions

Underlying Monitoring Infrastructure: CCMS
• CCMS is a set of integrated tools for monitoring and administration of SAP system landscapes
Offers predefined alert monitors for SAP system monitoringCan monitor remote systems as well as the local systemCan monitor applications running on AS ABAP and AS JavaPart of all of SAP NetWeaver (AS ABAP) systemsPart of all SAP Basis 4.0 and higher systemsProvides monitoring data to SAP Solution Manager, SAP NetWeaver Administrator, and other third-party monitoring solutions
10
Process Flow for Alerts
• Monitoring a system landscape When a problem occurs, an alert is triggered by CCMS“Auto-reactions” are then triggered in satellite systems (e.g., email an administrator), and the alert is passed on to SAP Solution ManagerUpon being notified of the alert, the administrator uses SAP Solution Manager’s central alert monitor tool to drill down to the alertThe administrator can analyze alerts by drilling down to a monitored component of the effected systemThe administrator clears the alert from the alert list when the issue is resolved

Considerations for Monitoring
• Are all systems available to users?• Are all interfaces working?• Is there sufficient space in database?• Is there sufficient space in file systems?• How many ABAP dumps?• Are there any critical errors in SAP work process logs?• Are the database backup and archive log backup OK?• Is there any failure in critical jobs?

Alert Monitoring – Quick Setup (cont.)• Add the Monitoring Set in RZ20 for the newly added satellite system and
select the node trees that need to be monitored• Once the system is added, you will be able to see all the Monitoring Tree
Entries (MTEs). You can create Monitoring Sets for all systems in the landscape that need to be monitored.
28
Central Monitoring Aspects
• Assign methods to the key MTEs which need to have alerts. To do this:
Identify the MTE which needs to be monitoredCreate matrix of the system, MTE, thresholds (yellow/red), Alertsend to (yellow/red )

31
Setting Up a Central Autoreaction
• A Central Autoreaction or “Autoreaction Method” is defined in the central system for MTEs to monitor satellite systems
• To set up a Central Autoreaction:1. In SAP Solution Manager, go to RZ21 Technical
Infrastructure Configure Central System Assign Central Autoreactions
2. Define Central Autoreaction Create 3. Select “Create with Template”, ENTER
“CCMS_OnAlert_Email_V2,” and press “Create with Template”Give the correct name to the new Autoreaction and save the method
32
Setting Up a Central Autoreaction (cont.)
• To set up a Central Autoreaction: (cont.)4. Now edit the above method and define all the parameters 5. Select the system for which you want to assign the
Autoreaction and click “MTE Classes from System”6. Now highlight the System I, MTE Class, and Central
Autoreaction and click “Assign Central Auto-Reaction”7. Once the Autoreaction has been assigned, SAP Solution
Manager will start emailing any alerts received from these satellite systems

Defining Multiple Autoreactions for an Alert (cont.)
• Prerequisite: Before customizing Alert Monitoring, monitoring sets for all satellite systems must have been defined
• Key questions/steps:What alerts or MTEs should be monitored?Who should be notified? How does each system need to handle the alerts?
E.g., Are Dev and QA less critical than Production?

Defining Multiple Autoreactions for an Alert (cont.)
• Key questions/steps: (cont.)What OS-level log files need to be monitored, and should an entry be made in SAPCCMSR.INI for it? What Oracle standard errors need to have alerts, such as ORA–600, and ORA–272?What pattern in the process trace/log files to monitor for?For each above MTE, what should be done for a Yellow alert and what should be done for a Red alert?Prepare a detailed spreadsheet with all above details Create the list of file systems which you will not monitor
43
OsColFile /usr/sap/ENS/DVEBMGS00/log/sapccm4x/OscolFile.txtLogfile /usr/sap/ENS/DVEBMGS00/log/sapccm4x/ORAALERTlogmon.iniLogfile /usr/sap/ENS/DVEBMGS00/log/sapccm4x/DEV_Wxlogmon.ini

Required Entries in CCMS Configuration File SAPCCMSR.INI
• Entries must be made in SAPCCMSR.INI if you want to monitor only selected file systems, specific Oracle errors, or to monitor for errors in a SAP work process trace file
• Example of entries in SAPCCMSR.INI file
• Content of OscolFile.txt

Features of the Central Performance History (CPH)
• Centralizes collection and storage of performance-related monitoring data of the complete system landscape in a fast and efficient way
• Handles minute, quarter-hourly, and hourly monitoring data• Automated data aggregation
Aggregations from minute values to hourly, monthly, and yearly averages
• Automated data reorganizationAggregation of performance values from a higher to a lower temporal granularity and the following deletion of the data with the higher granularity
• Accessible from the SAP Solution Manager Alert Monitor• Configurable, scheduled limited reporting and export of data

Analyzing Performance with SAP Solution Manager
• Prerequisites: Monitoring sets have been created in RZ20 for each satellite system to be monitored
• To analyze performance:Open the Monitoring set Go to View Details for Performance Nodes
This gives detail values on each MTE for last 24 Hours/ 4 Hours/30 Minutes
24 Hours – With Hourly Aggregated 4 Hours – Every 15 Minutes Aggregated 30 Minutes – Every Minute aggregated
For any performance issue we can look at each value and analyze the issue. This is the easiest way to identify the performance bottleneck.
