How to use Drawing Tools Drawing tools allow you to add shapes, boxes and outlines to a map after you have found your location, selected your product type and defined the area the map needs to cover with a product box (see main user guide). Drawing tool elements will appear as a separate layer in the final PDF, which means you can switch them on and off if you need a “clean” copy of the map without the shapes you’ve added. To add drawing tool elements to a map, click on the “Drawing Tools” tab at the top of the mapping screen, click once on the tool you need, and then click once on the map where you need to position the shape. (You may find it easier to zoom in to “detailed view”, which will show building outlines more clearly.) If you are creating a sealed-off shape with the “Draw Area” tool, double-click on the last corner of the rough shape you need to define.

How to use Drawing Tools

Drawing tools allow you to add shapes, boxes and outlines to a map after you have found your location, selected your product type and defined the area the map needs to cover with a product box (see main user guide). (You may find it easier to zoom in to “detailed view”, which will show building outlines more clearly.)

If you are creating a sealed-off shape with the “Draw Area” tool, double-click on the last corner of the rough shape you need to define.

Once the shape is defined on screen, click once inside it – black circles will appear around the outside. You can click on these circles to and drag the shape into the exact position you require.

When you click on the shape to highlight it, you will see a box pop up in the top right-hand corner- this will let you change the colour of the shape. It will also tell you how big the area included in the shape is in either hectares or acres. Clicking “Add as Label” will add the shapes size in hectares or acres as a label on the map.

If you click on the map it will lock the shape on screen. If you need to edit the shape, click on “Drawing Tools” again, click on edit, and click the shape to activate the circles around the image outlined.

If you want to highlight specific elements on the map like buildings or roads, use the “Fill Mastermap Object” button in the “Drawing Tools” tab. Click on “Pick” and then click once on the building or feature you’d like to highlight. (Please note, you will need to be in “Detailed View” for this function to work.)

This will outline in red as below. Please note – how much of the feature is highlighted depends on how the OS plan was surveyed; outlines may not be exact.

If you want to edit the outline, click “Edit” in “Drawing Tools” and click inside the area to activate the black circles. You can then move the points as required.
