Develop your personal story. Read, watch videos

and sharpen those storytelling skills!

I’m a teller of stories.


See yourself as a movie that you’d want to

watch. You should be able to sell your plot line in

one sentence: WHO you are, WHAT you’re

passionate about and WHY those skills would make

you a good fit for the company.


Show that you’re up for the challenge. Damon

says, “If you can show that you’ve overcome

adversity, in any way, personal or professional, I

know you’ll be okay in the trenches where I put

you.”


Cinematic/Historical Inspiration

● Think of a movie character who you most relate to and why?

● Describe the character

● What were their strengths?

● What were their skills?

● What did they accomplish?

● How did they overcome adversity?

● After release from prison, he became a minister and helped move the needle on civil rights. Malcolm became an advocate for all. He spoke the truth and proved that what he had to say was important for all races. He did not allow his past to predict his future.


Strengths to Keep in Mind● Employers value certain characteristics in the

people they hire to work for them. A few of

them are :

● Confidence : confidence to make eye

contact and strike up a conversation with

strangers

● Flexibility: Things can go wrong. You

have to be flexible enough to roll with the

punches and think outside the box.

● Proactive : Being one step ahead to

gauge when someone needs help is the best

way to minimize a brewing situation.

● And most importantly,

being respectful: Customers must

be treated with respect, even in the most

challenging situations.

● Don’t under represent yourself.

Explain each responsibility with pride

and confidence. MARKET YOURSELF!

● DON’T have to use any million-dollar wordsto illustrate your experience.

● DON’T write an entire paragraph.

Employers won’t read it. 2 lines maximum.

More Tips For Your Work History

● Don’t start phrases or sentences with the same

word. It weakens your message.

● Don’t add too many adjectives or adverbs, with

every achievement noted as “outstanding” or

“exceptional”. Sounds like Fluff!

● DON’T be afraid to use personal examples if you don’t have the professional experience. Just relate it to the job you are applying to.
