As with all routers, D-Link routers use one password for accessing the Wi-Fi, or wireless network, and an Admin password for accessing the router's settings. At D-link support Australia, our technical expert provided you some steps to reset a password on your D-Link Router device.

Step1- Use any computer connected to the Wi-Fi network to access the router's Admin panel

Step2- If you forget the Wi-Fi password then you can quickly retrieve it using any computer that still has Wi-Fi network access. If your computer doesn't have the Wi-Fi password, connect an Ethernet cable directly from your computer to the router, using any LAN port or numbered port on the router. Do not connect the cable to the router's Internet port or WAN port.

Step3- If you have forgotten the Admin password, reset the router. To do this, unplug the router and insert a paperclip into the reset button hole for five seconds.

Step4- Once your computer is connected, type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of a new Web browser window and press Enter. The Admin panel opens, prompting you to log in. For most D-Link routers, the default login credentials are:

User Name: adminPassword: admin

Step5- If this doesn't work, leave the Password field blank, while using admin as the User Name. If a blank password doesn't work, consult your router's manual to find what its default password is.

Resetting a Wireless Password

Step1- Click the Wireless Settings option and then click the Setup tab. Click the Manual Wireless Connection Setup button.

Step2- Click the Security Mode button if you had to reset the router and select WPA Personal for a home router. Click the WPA Mode button and select Auto (WPA or WPA2), or select WPA2 if you have only relatively new wireless devices in your house that have all been updated in the last five years or so. WEP mode is not very secure and is not recommended by the FCC.

Step3- Enter an 8 to 63-character password. Longer passwords are more secure than shorter words. D-Link recommends using Strong Password Generator. You can test how secure your password is to ensure it will provide the right protection.

Step4- Memorize your password. As long as you don't have strangers or hackers walking through your house, you can write it down and keep it in a safe place. Click the Save Settings button.

Resetting the Admin Password

Step1- To reset the Admin password, click Admin in the menu and then click the Tools tab.

Step2- Enter a strong password in both Password fields in the Admin Password section. If you ever need to give someone access to your router settings, you can set up a User Password.
