How To Repair A Toilet Flange The
Easiest Way How long have you been using your toilet at home? Is
it still in good condition? Chances are, when you’ve
had it for such a long time, it may already be showing
signs of leaking or in some cases, wobbling. And this
plumbing issue is usually caused by a worn out toilet
flange. The said part of your ceramic throne is
responsible for connecting the bowl to the drainpipe
that transports the waste materials to the rest of
your drainage system. With that said, let our DIY
guide show you how to remove and replace the
flange. Follow these steps carefully and you’ll
successfully complete this project on your own.
Tools You’ll Need:
Rags or newspapers
Wrench
Screwdriver
Putty Knife

Removal Of The Old Toilet Flange
1. Prepare your work area. Lay down
newspapers in one spot near the toilet bowl.
Turn off the toilet’s water supply and then
disconnect the plumbing. Flush the bowl to get
rid of the water in the tank. You can use a
sponge to absorb what’s left inside the tank
after flushing.
2. When there’s no more water in the toilet
tank, take a look at the bottom of the ceramic
throne. There should be two nuts that secure
the bowl to the floor. Use your wrench to loosen
both nuts and then keep them in a safe place.
3. Once the bowl is no longer hooked to the floor, slowly lift it up and set it on the
newspapers that you have prepared earlier.
4. Now work on the old flange. Slowly scrape off the wax with the help of your
putty knife. Once the wax is removed, use your screwdriver to detach the screws.
Just dispose of them because you won’t use them again with the new flange.
When you are done, detach the old flange. Put it in the sink and rinse it off with
water or a disinfecting wipe.
5. Get an old washcloth and plug the outflow pipe. That should prevent foul-
smelling gas from escaping out of the system.
6. When you’re done, measure the sewer pipe with a tape measure. This way,
you’ll determine the exact size of the new flange that you need to install.

Installation Of The New Toilet Flange
1. To make sure that you have the right size of
flange, bring the old one to the home depot and
purchase the exact same type. Don’t forget to also
buy a new wax ring because you’ll need that for
the installation.
2. When you get home, take the old rag out of the
outflow pipe and start working.
3. Position the new toilet flange to its rightful
place and secure it with the new bolts that came
with the package. Use your screwdriver to tighten
the bolts.
4. Lift the toilet and re-install it. Make sure that the new wax ring is also pushed
into the bottom. Press down on the toilet bowl to seal the wax.
5. Remember the nuts that you have stored in a safe place? Screw them back
using your hand and then use your wrench to tighten them.
6. Re-connect the water supply and turn it on. Now flush the toilet and check for
leaks. If there are signs of leaking, you have to re-tighten the parts. Otherwise,
you’re done.
