How to make a money rose

This past June, my mom wanted to buy me some flowers for mygraduation but the catch was that I had to choose my own bouquet. Ilooked around both on and offline, but I couldn't really find anything that I

wanted to carry around on my graduation day. I thought briefly abouttaking the easy way out and ordering an orchid lei from Hawaii so that myhands would be free, but those cost about $75 to ship to Canadaovernight by FedEx. I couldn't justify spending that much on somethingthat would be thrown away in less than a week.

I never really liked flowers, especially cut flowers. They seem so pointless;so expensive, yet so temporal. So in my tradition of making fashionstatements, I made a bouquet out of Canadian $5, $10 and $50 bills. Thisbouquet may cost many times more than a fresh bouquet (depending on

the denominations of the bills you use) but it will last forever. If you evergrow tired of it, you can even disassemble it and spend it on somethingmore practical.

Adapted fromDollar Bill Rose by Susan from Craft at Home, here are myrefined step-by-step instructions on how to make a long stemmed roseout of money.

    1. 1 silk flower with removable leaves and plastic calyx (circle of leavesbeneath petals)

    2. 1 metre of floral tape3. 2 floral stem wires about 50 cm long (one should be 18 or 20 gauge,

the other should be 22 or 24 gauge)4. 1 pair of longnose pliers5. 1 pair of linesman pliers (or anything rigid with a small flat surface)6. 5 crisp bills (the newer the better)

    Not shown:

    7. anything adhesive (glue, tape)8. any flat, rigid surface (pile of magazines on a table, cutting board)

    2. Preparing the petals

Become acquainted with theCanadian 20 dollar bill. I will beusing this type of bill in thetutorial. It is not necessary foryou to follow my choice of bill

orientation exactly, but it will helpin following my foldinginstructions if you know what Imean when I refer to the "front"or the "back" of the bill. This isthe front.

    This is the back.

    1. Fold bill in half with its backside facing outwards.

    2. Lay the bill flat again with theback facing upwards. By rollingthe corners tightly around oneend of the thicker (18 or 20gauge) wire, curl all 4cornerstightlyupwards atapproximately 45 degrees to theedges of the bill until the curlsmeet in the middle of the shortsides of the bill. If you cannot find

thick wire, something else roundand narrow like the inside of a Bicpen will also work.

    3. Make a small crease in thecentre of the bill, perpendicular tothe fold made in step 1. Donot fold the bill all the waylengthwise!

    4. Pinch the crease from thebottom.

    5. Crumple the middle of the billby folding only the middle partlike a fan, making sure that the 2long edges point upwards, so thatthe front of the bill forms theinside of 2 cup-like shapes.

    6. Flatten the creases in themiddle of the bill, while stillkeeping the middle gatheredtogether to make the cups morerounded.

This is an alternate view of whatthe cups should look like.

    7. Repeat steps 1 - 6, three moretimes to make 4 pairs of petals intotal.

    8. Fold the last bill in half with thefront facing outwards.

    9. Lightly cup the bill in one handwith the front facing outwards.

    10. Squeeze the bill a bit tighterto slightly curl the edges. This billwill form the unopened petals inthe middle of the rose.

    11. Similar to steps 3 - 5, crumplethe middle of the bill by foldingonly the middle part like a fan, making sure that the 2 long edgespoint upwards. Now all the petals

    are ready to be assembled.

    3. Assembling the petals 12. Take the thinner floral stemwire (22 or 24 gauge) and bend itin half. Take the bill with notightly curled corners (the onecreated in steps 8 - 11) and put itbetween the wire with the insideof the cup facing the bend in thewire, and the pinched sidesstraddling the 2 ends of the foldedwire as shown.

    13. Push the crumpled part of thebill tightly into the bend in thewire.

    14. Bend the wires tightly aroundthe crumpled centre so that theycross beneath the cup

    15. Intertwine the crossed wiresby giving them a 90 degree twist.

Take note of the direction inwhich you have twisted the wires. The wires should be twisted in thesame direction in future steps. Inthis example, I have twisted themin a clockwise direction whenlooking up from the bottom of theflower.

    16. Using the longnose pliers, bend the wires back upright withabout a 1 cm gap between the 2crossed wires.

    17. Take one of the curled petalsand place it between the 2 wireswith the cup facing upwards.

    18. Tightly push the middle of thecurled bill flat against the middle

    of the uncurled bill.

    19. Fold down and cross the wiresbeneath the cup as in step 14.

    20. Intertwine the crossed wiresby giving them a 90 degree twistas in step 15.

    21. On a protected flat surface(pile of magazines on a table,

cutting board) flatten thecrossings of the wires by pushingthe tip of the linesman pliersdown on the crumpled centreportion of the flower. If you donot have lineman pliers, they canbe substituted using anythingrigid with a small flat surface, likea roll of dimes.

    22. Repeat steps 16 - 21, threemore times using the 3 remainingcurled petals.

    23. Using your fingers, bend thewires back upright, this time withno gap between the crossedwires.

    24. Continue twisting the wiresuntil the two ends are fully

    intertwined.

This is what the flower shouldlook like after step 24 has beencompleted.

    4. Adding the finishing touches

    25. Roll one of the uncurledcentre petals into a point and holdit in place using glue or tape.

    26. Roll the second uncurled petalaround the first point created in

the previous step and glue or tapeit into position.

    27. Dismantle the silk flower

    28. Tear off about 6 inches offloral tape.

    29. Pull the floral tape taut inorder to make it sticky. Very

tightly wrap the floral tape aroundthe wire 1 - 2 inches immediatelybeneath the flower.

For best results, make sure thebuild-up of floral tape is a bitfatter right beneath the flower sothat the calyx stays in place.

    30. Push the calyx up against thebottom of the flower. Use about12 more inches of floral tape tosecure the calyx and finishwrapping the rest of the wire. If

desired, use more floral tape tosecure some leaves to the stem.
