How to Lock and Unlock Your ComputerPresented by:Chipola College’s Information Systems
Log on to WindowsEveryone who has a network accountshould be familiar with the Windows logonwindow shown below.
This network logon window, which requires your user name and password, provides a certain level of security.
Automatic ScreensaverAs an extra measure of security, anautomatic screensaver has beenimplemented as of Monday, Oct. 31,2006.
The automatic screensaver will engageafter the computer has been idle for 10minutes. The screensaver will lock thecomputer.
You will need to unlock Windows inorder to continue working on yourcomputer.
Ctrl – Alt – Delete KeysThe process to lock and unlock yourcomputer requires the same threekeys, as shown here.
Delete
To lock your computer, hold down the Ctrl key and the ALT key and hit the Delete key once.
Windows Security WindowThat combination of keys will cause theWindows Security window to bepresented.
To lock your computer, select Lock Computer with the left mouse button (or hit the Enter key).
A window will appear that will confirmthe computer is locked.
Unlocking Your ComputerIf you have locked your computer orthe automatic screensaver has lockedyour computer, you can unlock it andrestore your Desktop.
To do this, you must log back on to the machine (not the network) using that same combination of keys, which will open the Unlock Computer window, similar to the one on the next slide.
Dialog BoxesThe security policy set locallyon your machine willdetermine whether theComputer Locked box ispresented or the UnlockComputer box.
But the Computer Locked boxwill require the extra step ofhitting the Ctrl‐Alt‐Del keys inorder to present the UnlockComputer box.
Either box is correct.
Logging Back On Make sure your user name appears inthe User name field. Then type yournetwork password.
Hit the OK button or hit the Enter key.

Your Desktop and any programs or files that you had open should appear.
