Every major company investor, stock and business analyst was present waiting to hear

Paul’s turnaround plan and guidance numbers.

• Paul addressed the audience by asking them to locate the exit doors

• His speech was short and to the point

• The earnings or a specific turnaround plan were not discussed

• Other than his workers safety will come first


The Magic Sauce

Paul’s message was to use transparency to create a ZERO injury accident tolerance rate.

Also to create an organization built on openness and trust on ALL levels within the organization.


Was This Unknown CEO Crazy?

Analysts and investors scrambled to the exit doors to use the pay phones to call in immediate

sell orders of ALCOA stock!


ALCOA’s Stock Plummeted

Within 30 days of Paul taking over - the stock was down 70% from its previous low


Finally Some Good News

Paul O’Neill’s first win was to negotiate a settlement with the Unions to get the company

producing again.

He would not negotiate at the expense of his workers safety.

He was driven by the philosophy that putting profits over people is “always a stupid idea”.


Where to Start

ALL managers were to contact Paul within 24 hours of the incident. ANY incident!

Communication was conducted through the companies intranet in writing.

Yes, this later became known as email. Small world – He started in IT
