Mental preparation

Points to remember:

Be relaxed; this is not a sales pitch or a bank loan application

Although an informal discussion, be professional and concise

Prepare for lots of questions, some of which could be embarrassing or difficult to answer – mentors have a way of penetrating most personal barriers

Practice your presentation

During the Meeting Stick to the agenda but spend 5 minutes at

the beginning for “administration” – where the rest rooms are, how the mentor can be contacted by others, the timetable and other items that he or she may need to know about. Like will cell phones be ON or OFF!

Be honest and open, if the company is in trouble explain why – don’t sugar coat the facts

Listen to the mentor and don’t be afraid to ask questions

Record (with the mentors agreement) the session or take copious notes

Let the mentor know if there are any personal peculiarities or situations, for example:

You may have to collect the kids from school at a fixed time each day

You are perfectionist You talk with aliens (joke!)

It is important that there are no surprises for either party as the relationship gets under way.
