The result of a task based schedule.
Procrastinators use what's called a task-based schedule. A
task-based schedule is when you give yourself a period of time tofinish a project (e.g. I have seven days to finish this assignment),
but you dont specify when youll actually do it. This gives you the
flexibility to say, "I can do it later."
You then keep repeating that to yourself...until you can't say it
anymore. Sound familiar?
In this tutorial, I will provide you with a scientifically proven
approach to beating procrastination.
How It's Done
When you were younger, your parents might have forced you to study for an hour before dinner every day. Theirreminder was the regular trigger, the hour of studying before dinner was the regular scheduleand the dinner
was the regular reward.
Regular trigger: A re-occurring event that reminds you to study.
Regular schedule: A schedule based on studying for a certain period of time each day.
Regular reward: A familiar reward for completing a task (homework).
In order to beat procrastination, you need to recreate all three of these elements. It may seem daunting, but it's
much easier than you think. If you manage to follow these steps, even for one or two weeks, you'll notice that
studying regularly will become second nature.
Step 1: Decide On A Study Time-slot
Lets say youre free from 8 pm to 9pm every weekday this semester. Its after dinner and before you get into video
game & TV mode. This is your daily study time-slot.
Step 2: Automate The Trigger
Set an alarm on your cell phone to go off at the beginning of your study time slot (in this case 8 pm to 9 pm). Make
it an unique sounding alarm. Perhaps even record your own voice ordering yourself to study. This is your
automated trigger. It is important that the trigger sound does not change. Once youve decided on an alarm sound,
you have to keep it until you feel you dont need a regular trigger any more.
Step 3: Enforce The Schedule
For some, simply having the trigger and reserving the study-time slot is enough. For others, itll take some time to
adjust. You might silence the alarm at first and ignore it. You might skip more than half your study time-slots. But,
eventually youll start to build a habit. A, dare I say, regular study habit. The trick is getting past the first two
weeks. If you can force yourself to study during your study time-slots every day for the first two weeks, itll become
a habit. Its always hard to learn new habits, but if you persist, it will happen. Eventually, you might even learn to
feel uncomfortable if you dont study on schedule. A scary thought, I know.
Step 4: Reward Yourself

Why This Works
This method is rooted in a behavioral psychology theory called classical conditioning. The theory explains how
people form new habits and is one of the most recognized behavioral psychology theories in the world. Read
