Introduction

• Employees want to be more effective with their peers and managers.

• Managers want to maximize productivity and efficiency from their staff.

• Salespeople want to build rapport with customers and improve sales.

• Leaders want to build alignment with their vision.

• Spouses or parents want to relate well with their families.

DiSC will help you to...

• Understand what motivates people

• Become more awareness of why people do things . . .

• Respond in a way that promotes strong relationships…

DiSC Profiles provide a simple, yet proven, way to improve relationships with others. And, DiSC makes no value judgments about one style being better than another.

People have their needs written all over them. They’ll teach you how to treat them if you’re willing to interpret their signals. Your interaction will succeed if you pay attention and are more likely to fail if you ignore them.

Understanding your own style, and how it differs from others, allows you to evaluate and modify your approach. With this understanding, you can defuse problems before sabotaging a relationship. With these skills, tensions and conflicts are reduced, and comfort and cooperation improves! While your ideas may not change . . . the way you present those ideas can.

We’re happy to pass on tips and techniques from seasoned DiSC Users, to the new generation of trusted DiSC Practitioners.

Chapter 1: Frequently Asked Questions

DiSC Trainer FAQ’s

What is The DiSC Profile?

DiSC is a self-administering behavioral assessment. The DiSC behavioral system measures dimensions of observable behavior and is known as the universal language of behavior. Research shows that behavioral characteristics can be grouped into four major "personality styles" and individuals tend to exhibit specific characteristics common to that particular style.

The DiSC assessment classifies four dimensions of behavior commonly referred to as:

• Dominance - expresses actively as power, control and assertiveness.

• Influence - expresses actively as outgoing, social and influencing.

• Steadiness - expression is more reserved, patient and thoughtful.

• Conscientiousness - expression is reserved, questioning, and analytical.

Who created the DiSC Model?

The original DiSC model was originally based on the 1928 work of Dr. William Moulton Marston at Columbia University.

The four quadrant behavioral model was developed to examine the behavior of individuals within their environmentally specific situation. DiSC looks at behavioral styles and behavioral preferences. It was Marston's 1928 book, "The Emotions of Normal People," which introduced the DiSC model to the public. Marston, a contemporary of Carl Jung, defined four categories of human behavior style, type, or temperament which are Dominance, Influence (Inducement), Stability (Submission) and Compliant, Conscientious or Caution. Marston used compliance.

Even though Marston developed the D.I.S.C model, the DISC test or assessment, to prove his theory of the emotions of people within their environment, he never copyrighted his disc profile test. Thus DISC is available

in the public domain.

Later, the work of Marston was researched and updated by Dr. John Geier and Inscape Publishing at the University of Minnesota. The DiSC model and its complimentary assessment tools have helped over 50 million people in 20+ languages over the last 40 years.

As an added bit of trivia, Marston is known in many circles for his work in developing the lie detector test. He was also the creator, writer and producer of "Wonder Woman" which introduced into comic strips, the role model of a strong female.

Do I need to be Certified to teach DiSC?

No, DiSC Certification is not required.

We at Discprofilestore believe that you, our customers are capable of presenting DiSC and other profiles without us. We provide the resources, tools, and training if necessary, and you do the delivery. We respect your abilities, experience, training skills, and your insight about your industry and your organization. You are invited to customize the materials to fit your needs.

Can I use the DiSC for Hiring Purposes?

No. The DiSC is not predictive.

It does not precisely determine job fit, job fitness, or success. Instead, it describes one's work behavior patterns, style, traits, or type. Use DiSC to manage performance after a person is hired.

Page 9: How to Easily Train One or Hundreds of People with · 2018-02-15 · It was Marston's 1928 book, "The Emotions of Normal People," which introduced the DiSC model to the public. Marston,

8

Do all D's, i's, S's and C's behave the same way?

No! A person's observable behavior is dependent on the unique combination of styles that they tend to use. The most productive use of DiSC information is to learn about the DiSC Classical Patterns. There are 15 possible combinations of behavior. There is generally a primary style, and a secondary style. It is the combination of styles that makes us all unique.

Why is the "i" in DiSC printed in lower case?

For you curious, high C styles, the lower case "i" in DiSC is an Inscape, trademark - originally a printers error. Being flexible and adaptable, Inscape, Carlson Learning Company, Performax decided to copyright the mistake and create their version of DiSC, using the small i. Always look for the DiSC Assessment with the small i. If your version doesn't have a lower case "i" it is not from Inscape.

Chapter 5: History of Styles

There’s Nothing New About the Study of Behavioral Styles

For thousands of years, humans have been on a quest to better understand themselves and to better understand our human nature, and explain the differences among people. Personality profile systems have been around since 590 BCE. The earliest recorded assessment tool is from ancient Hebrew writings - Ezekiel's Four Living Creatures - Ezekiel 1:1-28. Other well- known profiling systems include Hippocrates' Four Humors (400 BCE), and Galen's Four Temperaments (190 and in modern times, Carl Jung's Psychological Types (1923), the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (1958), Hartman's Color Code (1987) and Kiersey's Four Temperaments (1998).

The ancients believed that the differences in behavior were influenced by variations in the quality and quantity of our body fluids. They referred to the four temperaments as Choleric/Dominant (yellow bile,) Sanguine / Influence (blood,) Phlegmatic / Steadiness (phlegm,) and Melancholic / Conscientiousness (black bile.) References to this early terminology are still used today by some writers involved with religious education.

Four Style Categories

In more recent years, with advances in research and modern psychological theories, more sophisticated models of human behavior have evolved. However, one common denominator remains – they all group behavioral styles into four categories.

William Moulton Marston

The book, Emotions of Normal People, was published in the 1920's by William Moulton Marston. It forms the theoretical basis for the DiSC Model of Behavior and the most recent DiSC Classic Profile. Marston was not concerned with categorizing people into psychological types; rather he focused on categorizing behavior into four types. He theorized that effective people would behave in a manner consistent with the demands and expectations of the environment.

Page 23: How to Easily Train One or Hundreds of People with · 2018-02-15 · It was Marston's 1928 book, "The Emotions of Normal People," which introduced the DiSC model to the public. Marston,

22

This suggests that even though a person may have a core behavioral preference which is most natural and comfortable for that person, a person's behavior will vary from one situation to another

In the 1960's, Dr. John Geier developed an instrument called the Personal Profile System. He conducted further research to refine Marston's model and determined the unique DiSC Classical Profile Patterns which are based upon combinations of the various behavioral styles.

Chapter 6: William Marston's Theory

DiSC Theory - William Moulton Marston

Inscape's DiSC products began with a theory based on the work of William Moulton Marston, a Harvard psychologist, and a contemporary of Carl Jung. The findings of his work are found in his book: "The Emotions of Normal People," published in 1928.

While all of his contemporaries studied abnormal behavior, Marston was not interested in mental illness, but rather, in how normal people behaved as they interacted with others and the world around them – their environment.

It was his intent to increase people's understanding of themselves and others while decreasing misunderstandings. He found that two kinds of perceptions are particularly useful for explaining people's response in a particular situation:

Perception of Environment and Perception of Self:

Marston observed that these two kinds of perceptions interact to describe an individual's response to a situation.

Dominance:

When the environment is perceived as unfavorable and the individual feels more powerful than the environment, he or she expresses a Dominant

Page 25: How to Easily Train One or Hundreds of People with · 2018-02-15 · It was Marston's 1928 book, "The Emotions of Normal People," which introduced the DiSC model to the public. Marston,

24

response. This individual will likely try to direct, change, fix, or control the situation.

Influence:

When the environment is perceived as favorable and the individual feels more powerful than the environment, he or she expresses a desire to Influence. This person will likely try to bring others around to his or her point of view - to influence or persuade.

Steadiness:

When the environment is perceived as favorable and the individual feels less powerful than the environment, he or she expresses behaviors that offer support and help others. This person will likely try to keep the situation stable and support those in need.

Conscientiousness:

When the environment is perceived as unfavorable and the individual feels less powerful than the environment, he or she expresses Conscientiousness Behaviors. This person will likely set clear rules within the situation and work very hard to follow them.

While Marston created the DiSC Model, he never developed and instrument by which to measure it. The original DiSC Classic Profile based on the work of Marston was developed by John Geier of Performax Systems International.

For more than thirty years Inscape and its predecessors have researched and refined the original DiSC theory to maximize its impact and accuracy.

Chapter 9: What is EPIC

EPIC: Electronic Profile Information Center

EPIC delivers DiSC Profiles & Reports online, anywhere and at any time. EPIC is an online profile delivery system that provides a simple way to send, customize, print, and store online assessments. As an EPIC system administrator, you have full control of administration and access to Inscape's online profiles and follow up reports. There are over 40

assessments available in EPIC including DiSC Classic 2.0 and all Everything DiSC Profiles. EPIC-based profiles offer advantages even Inscape's paper instruments can't match.

EPIC is a "do-it-yourself" system designed for Trainers, Coaches, Consultants and HRD Professionals. We recommended that you have your own EPIC Administrator Site if you have 10+ people to complete a profile.

With your own EPIC Administrator Site, you can issue access codes to anyone in the world, anytime, via the internet. Once a respondent complete the assessment, EPIC generates a personalized profile that can be used as a stand-alone piece or as part of a larger training program.

SAVE Time and $$ with an EPIC ADMINISTRATOR SITE

No shipping charges, no valuable time lost in class with administration of the profile – responding, counting, scoring and plotting graphs is done for you – saving time and increasing accuracy. With the profile done as pre-work, every minute of classroom time can be used to its full advantage.

Epic Gives You Full Control and Flexibility • Customize your site and brand your profiles with company logo and

information

• You decide who can view reports and when

• Monitor respondents report completion

• View, print and email reports that are completed in EPIC

• Organize reports in folders: Labeled by date, department, division, etc.

• Customize select reports and build group reports from stored data

• Regenerate group reports easily as staff members change

• Make training stick with EPIC - offer post-training reinforcement with follow up reports

ENHANCED FEATURES: After participants have completed their individual profile reports, you can print Facilitator Group Reports and Participant Comparison Reports

EPIC Works on an EPIC Credit System. You purchase credits for your EPIC Account and they become the currency used for paying for reports in the EPIC system.

The EPIC Credit System operates very much like a postage meter. You purchase a dollar amount of postage for your meter and it is debited a specific amount each time you send a package or letter.

Similarly, each report in the EPIC system is assigned a credit value. EPIC Credits are deducted from the supply of credits in your account when access codes are assigned to respondents/participants.

EPIC Credits can be used for ANY EPIC report, any time. EPIC Credits do not expire. Lower your report costs by purchasing credits in quantities, receive them into your account electronically, and "bank" them to use with ANY of the current or future EPIC profile reports.
