Personal information(2)

Question Answer

Has this child formed an independent family unit or are they living an independent life?

This question is asking whether your child is living outside of the family home, living with a partner and/or with children of their own, or if your child is financially independent. If they are, your child may not be eligible for a dependant visa and you should contact the IST. If your child is living with you, the Tier 4 visa holder or applicant, and your child relies on you for food and shelter, you can answer ‘No’. If your child does not live with, or rely on the Tier 4 visa holder, you should answer ‘Yes’. You should then click ‘Save and continue’.

Are both of the child's parents lawfully in the UK?

This is asking whether both parents are in the UK with a visa, or some other immigration status allowing them to live in the UK. If both parents are in the UK with visas, or applying for visas at the same time, you should answer ‘Yes’. If only one of the child’s parents is in the UK, you should answer ‘No’. You will then be asked ‘Does the main applicant have sole responsibility for this child's upbringing?’ This is asking whether the parent in the UK has all legal responsibility for the child and so the other parent is not involved in any way with the child’s upbringing. If the Tier 4 student does have sole responsibility, please answer ‘Yes’. If you do not, please answer ‘No’. If you answer ‘No’, you will then be asked ‘Is the main applicant this child's sole surviving parent?’. If the child’s other parent is deceased, answer ‘Yes’. If the child’s other parent is alive, answer ‘No’. You can then click ‘Save and continue’.

Do you live at the same address as (Tier 4 student)?

If the child lives in the same house as the Tier 4 student, answer ‘Yes’. If the child lives in another house with someone else, answer ‘No’. You will then be asked ‘Why do you not live at the same address as (Tier 4 student)?’ and will be given the choices of ‘I am studying away from home (at school or university)’ or ‘I live away from home for a different reason’. If you choose ‘I live away from home for a different reason’ you will then be asked to give that reason in a text box.

Do you pay money towards rent, bills or food?

If the child does not pay money towards the household bills, you should answer ‘No’. If the child does pay money towards the household, you should answer ‘Yes’. You will then be asked ‘How much do you pay each month on average?’ and should state an amount in numbers in the text box provided. You can then click ‘Save and continue’.

Dependant details

Question Answer

Does this dependant intend to stay in the UK beyond any period of leave the main applicant is granted?

As a dependant, the child is only permitted to be in the UK for as long as the Tier 4 visa holder is. You should, therefore, answer ‘No’ to this question. You can then click ‘Save and continue’.

Current Status

Question Answer

During your current or last grant

of leave in the UK, were you

required to register with the

police?

This question will only appear if the child is a national of a country which is required to register with the Police in the UK and the child is over 16 years old. If the child is required to register with the police this will be written on their visa. When they registered, they should have been given a police registration certificate. You must ensure that the child’s police registration certificate has their current address on it and you must submit this with the visa application. If the child is required to register with the Police you should select ‘Yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If the child is not required to register with the police you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’.

Do you have a biometric residence permit?

If the child has been issued with a biometric residence permit (BRP) and you are providing this with the visa application then you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked to ‘Enter your permit number’. You should type the number found on the top of the child’s BRP in the box provided and then click ‘Save and continue’. If the child has been issued with a biometric residence permit (BRP) but you are not able to provide this with their visa application (for example, it has been lost or stolen) you should select ‘No, I had a biometric residence permit for my most recent leave, but I do not have it now’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If the child has never been issued with a biometric residence permit then you should select ‘No, I did not have a biometric residence permit for my most recent leave’ and then click ‘Save and continue’.

What is your current National

Insurance number?

If your child has been issued with a National Insurance number so that they can work in the UK, you should enter it here. A National Insurance Number is made up of numbers and letters in the following format: AB 01 23 45 C. If you have been issued with multiple National Insurance numbers, click ‘+ Add another National Insurance number?’ and include it. If your child does not have a National Insurance number, or has been issued with a temporary number (usually in the format: TN 01 01 01 M (or F)), then you should select the box labelled ‘I do not have a National Insurance number, or I have a temporary one’ then click ‘Save and continue’.

Additional information

Question Answer

Have you ever received any public

funds (money) in the UK?

Your child should not be receiving any public funds. Public funds include a range of benefits, tax credits and housing assistance, paid by the state to people on a low income.

It is a condition of their visa that your child is not entitled to receive public funds whilst in the UK on PBS dependant visa. Therefore, you should select ‘No’ to this question and then click ‘Save and Continue’. If your child is receiving public funds then you must select ‘Yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have selected ‘Yes’ we recommend that you email the IST before submitting your application. You will then be asked ‘Tell us which public funds you have received’. You will then need to select each of the public funds displayed to identify which public funds your child is or has previously been receiving before clicking ‘Save and continue’. If you are not sure if you are receiving ‘public funds’, a list of all public funds will be displayed if you select ‘Yes’ so that you can check this.

Criminal or unspent convictions

Question Answer

Do you have any of the following, in the UK or in a different country?

This question will only appear if your child is aged 10 years or older. This question is asking if your child has ever been found guilty of a crime by a legal system in any country around the world. If your child has never been convicted of a crime, you should select ‘No, I have never had any of these’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If one of the offences does apply to your child, you should select that offence and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you do need to select one of these offences then the IST recommends that you contact us to discuss this further before submitting the visa application. If your child has more than 1 offence, once you have entered the details for the first offence you will then be asked ‘Do you have any other...’ and you should answer ‘Yes’ before giving the details of the next offence. You should select ‘No’ and ‘Save and continue’ if your child has no other offences.
