A “plane” refers to all the matter inthe universe that is formed from aparticular type of atom. Forexample, the mental plane is the sumtotal of all the matter that is formedout of 3-atoms. In contrast, a“world” refers to the portion ofmatter of a particular plane that isassociated with a planet. Forexample, the mental world is thesphere of mental matter thatsurrounds and interpenetrates theEarth. This chapter describes thesubtle worlds that surround theEarth, but much of the informationcan also be applied to the subtleplanes in general.Chapter 3 stated that a galaxy is aseries of 49 interpenetrating spheresof matter from all 49 planes, and

that a solar system is a series of 7interpenetrating spheres of matterfrom 7 planes. Continuing along thesame lines, a planet is a series of 3interpenetrating spheres of matterfrom 3 planes (physical-etheric,emotional and mental-causal).Like human beings, the Earth hasfive bodies (or worlds) composedof five types of matter (causal,mental, emotional, etheric andphysical). The other visible planetsin the solar system are all similarlyconstructed, but there are alsoinvisible planets that are in theprocess of “incarnating” and don’thave a “physical body” yet. It isstrange to think of planets as livingentities but they are; they just belongto a different evolutionary path than

ours. The Earth is the only planetin the solar system that is, has been,or ever will be, home to physical life,but all planets (physical and non-physical) are home to subtle life-forms at some time or another –that is why they exist.When a planet “dies” its bodiesdissolve just as ours do. The Moonis a dead planet and the ball of rockwe see in the night sky is its deadphysical body, which will take billionsof years to breakdown. Planets arespherical because their variousgrades of matter are concentricallyarranged around the ensoulingmonad. Our physical world includesthe solid planet, the liquid oceansand the gaseous atmosphere. Thesubtle worlds interpenetrate the

physical world just as waterinterpenetrates the soil, but eachsuccessively higher subtle world alsoextends further out into space,beyond the atmosphere. Theemotional world is known to extend

It isthrough the Centre that we are allworking together to fulfill the lifemission of our Souls and so togetherwe are walking this path and togetherwe are finding out new and excitingthings along the way.

Because this change from oneray energy to another is very slow,

you will be hearing a lot said aboutmoving from the Age of Pisces intothe Age of Aquarius. We areextremely fortunate that the changeis a gradual one. We are humanbeings are always reluctant to makeeven the smallest change in our lives,let alone be changed by a hugeenergy Ray. So the secret is toembrace this change. To let it flowand to go with that flow. Swimmingupstream is extremely tiring - in factit's exhausting and such wastedenergy. Swimming upstream willnever get you to your destinationand will just cause more and morefrustration as you watch other peoplepassing you by.

We have been given the Creativeenergy of the Great I Am. Don'tbe afraid to use it on a consciouslevel, for we use it every day anyway,even without us knowing. Takecharge of your life and the abilityto use the Creative energy in aforceful and meaningful way, so thatyou can feel the benefits and reapthe rewards of your efforts.

Feel the excitement of thesechanges within your very core andin embracing this change and makingit a part of your life, you will see aturn-around in your life which, wealways emphasise, has a positiveeffect on those around you. And inso doing, we are all working together

The Earth’s subtlebodies are largely contained withinits physical body, as are our own.The lowest emotional subplane (2:1)is in alignment with the lowestphysical subplane (1:1), whichcorresponds to solid physical matter.All of the Earth’s solid matter (1:1)is below our feet, and so is most ofthe 2:1 matter. The lowest emotionalsubplane (2:1) is known as the“underworld” because it is literallyunderneath the world. So “hell” isliterally inside the Earth – more onthat later in the chapter.

Figure 10a shows the Buddhistnames and characteristics for thesubplanes of the physical, emotionaland mental planes. I wouldn’t takethe bodily heights or life-spans tooliterally, but they do give an idea ofthe increased spatial dimensions andfaster perception of time associatedwith the higher planes. The word“dhyana” means meditation,indicating that certain advancedbeings on the mental plane createand sustain “forms” using the powerof their minds. The levels of “focus”(21 to 35) are the terms RobertMonroe used to identify the varioussubplanes he explored in his out-of-body experiences. There are sevensubplanes within each plane, yet onlysix are accessible to human beings.This is because our subtle bodies

only contain molecules (e.g. 2:1–2:6)and not atoms (e.g. 2:7), so we can’tperceive the seventh subplane.Consequently, we experience briefperiods of unconsciousness whenwe pass through the seventhsubplanes of the etheric andemotional worlds (either during sleepor after physical death). Purgatory,Paradise and Heaven are realms thatwe pass through after physical death,and these will be explained later inthe chapter.Alternative Names for the SevenPlanes or WorldsThe emotional plane (2) is oftenincorrectly called the “astral plane”.The term “astral” was first used inthe 19th century to describe the factthat three times as many stars arevisible with “higher sight”. But night

does not exist in the emotional worldbecause emotional-plane light canpass through the Earth unhindered,so no stars are visible. It is ethericsight that allows three times as manystars to be seen, so the “astral” planeactually refers to the etheric plane.The divine plane (6) is oftenincorrectly called the monadic plane,because Theosophists mistakenlybelieve the third triad to be themonad. Figure 11b lists some ofother names that the seven planesof the solar system are known by.These subtle worlds are not “places”that exist somewhere else; they areall around us, all the time.
