Surviving on a desert island Many of us occasionally think about living on a desert island, but few ever have the chance to experience it. In the TV series ‘Survivor’, sixteen people do just that. For forty days they live together and compete against each other on a tropical island, and at the end of the contest the winner receives one million pounds. This is an extract from the diary of one of the contestants, Mike Foster. ‘When you think about living away from home, you imagine being in another city or even another country, but travelling halfway round the world to a desert island in the Seychelles is not something you consider. But now that I’m here, I must say that I absolutely love it. The scenery is extremely beautiful – there are moments when you feel like staying here forever.

‘Having said that, there are real difficulties. We all miss people back home – we’re so far away from everything here – and we have disagreements and arguments. I’m finding it hard to live without simple things, like soap and shampoo and a comfortable bed, and we’re having some problems finding food, too. Catching fish is quite hard, especially when the sea is rough. We’re getting a bit better at fishing but I have dreams about eating hamburgers or chocolate biscuits!

‘One thing that’s obvious is that we’re all losing weight. Everybody is looking fit and healthy. People won’t recognize us when we get back to civilization!’

Job hunting on the Internet A recent survey asked students in their last year of school or university how they were looking for their first job. Their answers were many and varied. However, those who were used to the Internet were having more success than those who were employing more traditional methods, such as looking up advertisements in the newspaper.

The possibilities on the net seem almost endless. By simply typing the word jobs into a search engine, we got a list of nearly thirty million websites coming up on the screen. With so many to choose from, it would be impossible to find anything suitable, so the next step is to look for something more specific. You have to limit your search to the area you want to work in.

As an example, we chose law. Limiting the search meant that ‘only’ 196,000 websites appeared, and the search had taken just 0.46 seconds. The first website on the list was advertising 339 different jobs. As you can see, there were plenty of options.

Obviously, a lot of the available jobs are not open to school or university leavers – they call for higher qualifications or more experience. On top of this, there are factors that you must consider yourself, such as where you want to work and what salary you are prepared to accept. But there are lots of jobs out there, and it’s certainly a good idea to look at the possibilities on the Internet when you’re searching for work.

Teenagers’ problems Andrew: ‘I’m having problems choosing my school subjects because I’m not sure what I want to do in the future. I don’t know if I should pick the subjects that I enjoy or the ones that are the most useful in getting a job. I don’t want to make the wrong choice now – it might affect my career.’

Sue: ‘The only problem with school is that we have to take exams all the time. In my opinion, exams don’t really show what you know, but we spend most of our time preparing for them and worrying about them. My parents think that exam results are the most important thing in the world and the teachers are always pushing us. We never get a break!’

Greg: ‘I don’t like studying and I’m not good at it, so school feels like a prison to me – I’d really like to leave. But these days there’s a lot of pressure on everyone to stay at school and then to study at a college or university. It used to be easier when my parents were growing up. I think there were more choices open to them.’

Diana: ‘For me, the main issue is money, because that means freedom. My parents aren’t rich and I hate having to depend on them. I’ve got a Saturday job, but it doesn’t pay very well. I want to go to university, but that’s also going to be expensive. When will I be able to earn my own money and live my own life?’

A climbing accident People have always been attracted to rock-climbing and plenty of accidents have resulted from this hobby. Seventeen-year-old Wendy Sherlock has fallen three times without any injury while rock-climbing, but after her latest accident last Saturday, she is lucky to be alive.

Wendy has been in hospital for two days after an eight-metre fall from a rocky cliff in the Sanderson National Park. She doesn’t remember much about the accident, and it’s not surprising considering her injuries.

‘I’ve got quite a bad head injury – that’s the worst thing,’ Wendy explained. ‘But I’ve also broken my arm and a couple of my ribs and there’s a problem with my left shoulder.’ She doesn’t know how long she will have to stay in hospital, as the doctors haven’t told her yet. However, she is realistic about her recovery. ‘I’ll be in here for a while, because I hit my head when I landed on the ground. That’s why I can’t remember anything about the accident.’

Wendy’s doctors are confident that there’s no permanent damage, but they’ve advised her to give up her dangerous sport. However, Wendy is undeterred. ‘Since I was a child, I’ve always loved climbing and I’m determined to carry on doing it,’ she said. ‘I think this accident is simply a reminder to take a bit more care. I’ve started to feel better already, and I can’t wait to start climbing again.’

El Niño What has caused the recent tropical storms, floods and droughts in different parts of the world? The answer is El Niño. Its name, meaning ‘The Child’ in Spanish, makes it sound harmless, but in fact it has a dramatic and violent effect on the world’s weather.

Normally, winds blow across the southern Pacific Ocean from east to west. In an El Niño year, they blow in the opposite direction, bringing a current of warm water flowing back towards South America. Coastal waters become two to three degrees warmer. Sea levels along the South American coast can rise by as much as fifty centimetres and this causes widespread flooding. At the same time, South-east Asia and Australia are left without the rainfall that they need.

Until recently, El Niño has usually arrived every five to eight years and it has lasted, on average, for about eighteen months. But now this pattern seems to be changing. El Niño comes more often, and it lasts longer. Many scientists believe that this pattern will continue in the future. According to their predictions, El Niño will bring more rainfall and flooding to California and South America, greater famine to countries like Indonesia and worse droughts and forest fires to Australia.

Many people have already lost their lives due to the effects of El Niño and the dangers will increase if the Pacific winds become more unreliable. Nature is a force that we will never be able to control. We will simply have to try to limit its effects.

They found work easily enough, but it wasn’t exactly the type they had expected. While they were walking back to their hosteone evening, Volkan saw a small advertising poster stuck on a wall. It was asking for people to work as cleaners and it had a phone number. They rang, expecting to hear about a job cleaning offices. Instead, the manager of the cleaning company employed them as cleaners of the city’s largest clock – Big Ben.

Volkan and Emir had never had a similar job before, but their boss wasn’t worried about that. He simply wanted them to start as soon as possible. His two previous cleaners had left suddenly the week before, and he was desperate to find replacements. The next morning, the two students were workiground beside the river at Westminster.

Volkan and Emir have just returned to Turkey after spending nine months in their unusual job in England. They’re going bacto their studies at the beginning of the university year and theycertainly won’t be taking up cleaning as a career, but they’re still smiling about the great experience they’ve had. Agoraphobia A perfect day has been predicted in the weather forecast. You look out of the window and see the sun shining brightly. What could be better than to spend the day outside? Not for some, however. Not today or any day if you suffer from agoraphobia.

Pauline Proctor is one such sufferer. Her fear of being in open spaces and public places means that she has had to stay inside her house for the past four months.

Pauline used to go out to work, but she began to feel more and more nervous about walking in the streets. She became terrified of travelling on buses or trains, and her feelings of panic made it extremely difficult to go shopping or visit her friends. At work she found it impossible to speak in a meeting or go out for lunch with her colleagues. So when she was given the opportunity to work from home using the Internet, she took it. She was very lucky to get this chance – many people in her condition simply become unemployed.

Pauline is determined to control her phobia. She is receiving professional advice and she has been learning ways to keep calm. Now she is close to her first trip outside. Some friends are picking her up and taking her to their house for dinner. ‘I’m sure it will be OK – I can do this,’ she said. ‘I’ll feel quite safe, and I’m looking forward to the evening.’

Don’t leave it too late! If you had an idea for a new invention, what would you do? Would you start work immediately and try to sell your product? Philip Brown had a great invention, but he didn’t make the most of it and missed the opportunity of a lifetime.

Some years ago, Philip came up with an interesting idea. He loved music, and he wanted to be able to listen to it everywhere he went. He examined his cassette recorder and realized that if he made it small enough, he would be able to carry it with him. He made up his mind to try to produce one of these small machines.

The technology was a challenge, but Philip was an electronics expert. Working in his garage, he went to great lengths to make a prototype of his machine, which he called a ‘mini-cassette’. It used small parts and it was powered by batteries. Because it wasn’t much bigger than the size of a cassette, it fitted in his jacket pocket. It was now equipped with small headphones so it could be used in the street or in public transport without annoying other people.

Philip found his machine convenient and practical, but he didn’t make any effort to sell it. A couple of years later, the Walkman was produced by a Japanese company and was hugely successful around the world. If Philip had sold his invention when he first developed it, he would have made a fortune!

Test: Unit 8 A change of image Caroline Blake and her brother Tim were returning from Asia, where they had been travelling for eight months. In the family flat, their parents had prepared a big celebratory meal and the whole family was anxiously waiting for them to arrive. But when at last the two travellers appeared at the door, there was a moment’s complete silence.

They had left as pale, tidy, rather boring-looking young people, with their straight brown hair cut short and each wearing jeans, trainers and a T-shirt. Now they were difficult to recognize.

Tim had grown his hair and had had it put into dreadlocks which spread over his shoulders. Although it was autumn in England, he was wearing sandals and a Malaysian sarong, which is a kind of skirt that is often worn by men in South-east Asia.

Caroline’s appearance was as surprising as Tim’s. The sides of her head were shaved and her ears, which were each pierced in five places, were full of earrings. On the top of her head, her hair, which was very short and spiky, was dyed red. Like her brother, she was tanned dark by the sun.

‘You look cool,’ their little sister Susie said.

‘You certainly look different!’ said Mrs Blake bravely, as she put out her arms to her son and daughter. Caroline looked at Tim quickly. They both knew it would be best to wait a while before they showed their parents the tattoos that they had got on their last night in Singapore.

A wasted journey Although he had broken his leg a few weeks earlier, Kevin Crowther was still looking forward to the Glastonbury music festival. His family told him not to go and suggested that he sold his ticket on the Internet, but Kevin was determined not to miss the festival. He set out for Glastonbury early on Thursday morning.

He had already decided that the best way to get there was by hitchhiking. If you held out your thumb, a kind-hearted driver would stop and you could reach your destination without spending any money. Kevin was sure that his broken leg would help – drivers would be more willing to stop for him if they saw that he had an injury.

He was wrong. He waited for three hours until a woman offered him a lift. Unfortunately, her car broke down ten minutes later, and it was another hour before a lorry driver picked him up and agreed to take him to Glastonbury. Kevin was relieved, as his leg was hurting and he was feeling tired and hungry. But the journey was unbearably slow. The road was busy and they were held up several times in traffic jams.

Finally, Kevin booked into a small hotel for the night. The girl at reception asked him if he had come to Glastonbury to do some sightseeing. When he told her that he had come for the music festival, she looked at him strangely. ‘I’m afraid you’re out of luck,’ she said. ‘The festival doesn’t begin for another two weeks!’

Fame and privacy One drawback of fame might be a lack of privacy – but not every famous person has this problem. The fame of successful writers creates less pressure than that of pop stars, because although we know their names, we may not recognize their faces.

The author of the best-selling Harry Potter books, J. K. Rowling, has appeared in public more often than most writers to give interviews, sign books and accept awards. When she makes a public appearance, she’s met by crowds of young fans who want to get her autograph. But Joanne Rowling doesn’t see herself as a star. ‘It’s entirely possible for me to lead a very normal life,’ she said. ‘Kids don’t turn up to see me personally. I think I could be man, woman, old, young. I hope and believe that the books are the attraction, not me personally.’

J. K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter novel in a small flat where she was bringing up her baby daughter Jessica. She now earns more money than any other woman in Britain. She enjoys the benefits of her success, but she would hate to lose her freedom and privacy. In a recent interview she explained that she worked best alone, and that it was important for her to protect Jessica’s privacy as well as her own. The best moment of her career was not in the camera lights – it was when she heard that her first book had been accepted by a publisher: ‘What a moment! I walked on air for days.’

Revision Test: Units 6 – 10 Look-alike If you’re out shopping one day and think you see David Beckham, the England footballer, you should look again before you get too excited. It might not be David Beckham – it could be Mark Lloyd.

Mark, who is employed as an assistant in an electrical shop, looks very similar to the famous football star. ‘People are amazed when they come into the shop,’ he said. ‘Some of them really think it’s David Beckham who is selling them their washing machine!’ He is often stopped in the street by fans who ask him for his autograph, and he is used to people looking at him and waving to him when he goes out.

‘The similarity wasn’t obvious when Beckham got his head shaved or when he had short spiky hair. My boss wouldn’t have been too pleased if I had had my hair cut like that,’ Mark said. ‘But these days I can see we do look alike.’ Mark has the footballer’s blond good looks and the same smile. He is almost as fit and well-built as Beckham because he loves adventure sports. ‘I compete in the national windsurfing competitions, and you have to be very fit for that,’ he said.

We asked if there were any advantages in having a famous face. Mark told us that he had been offered money to appear as a Beckham look-alike at public events and in TV advertisements. ‘I might accept one of these jobs some day,’ he said. ‘It could be fun, and I would probably earn quite a lot of money. But if they wanted me to play football, I would have to turn the job down – I’ll never be able to kick the ball like David Beckham!’

Marrying for money? Matt Dawson seems a very happy 25-year-old, and he has reason to be. He has been married for three years to Linda Morroni. She is nineteen years his senior and millions of dollars richer.

They met six weeks before they got married, at a casino in Las Vegas where Matt was working. At the time, Matt claimed that he fell in love with her as soon as he saw her, but all the signs of love point to Linda’s healthy bank account. Recent revelations confirm this theory.

‘I was working a 50-hour week in a job I hated. It was unbelievably boring. Then Linda came along and started to throw her money about on the casino table. We got on really well, but when I asked her out, I was pretty surprised that she didn’t turn me down. To be honest, although I liked her as a person, part of the attraction was that she had so much money,’ Matt confessed. ‘That’s still the case, but it doesn’t seem to bother her.’

I asked Matt if her family suspected that he was only interested in her money. ‘It’s a bit embarrassing really. They don’t seem to mind as long as she’s happy. She was quite lonely before she met me.’

Matt has a relaxed attitude towards their relationship. ‘Who knows what will happen? We just take each day as it comes. We haven’t got any children so we can do what we like. We do lots of travelling – we’re planning a two-week cruise in the Caribbean next month. We buy expensive clothes and eat in fancy restaurants. When life’s this good, why worry about the future?’

The history of video games Just over fifty years ago, a young American engineer by the name of Ralph Baer was asked to build the best-ever television set. Baer was very talented and he didn’t find the task difficult. He had wanted to go further than his original objective and incorporate some kind of game into the TV set. Unfortunately, however, his superiors turned down the idea and he never got the chance.

Two decades later, Ralph Baer’s idea, which had seemed unrealistic in the 1950s, became a reality. A team of engineers carried on his work, and in 1972 they produced the first video games. These were extremely simple by today’s standards. The first video tennis game, for example, consisted of one short white line on either side of the black screen and a white dot moving from side to side to represent the ball.

The simplicity of these early games would not be satisfying enough for today’s more sophisticated consumers. Since the 1970s, computer games have been getting more and more complicated. The graphics are more realistic because they are computer-generated, and a great deal more money is spent on them by both customers and manufacturers. The games have also become more violent; in fact, they are often blamed for the rise in teenage violence in some countries.

And what about the companies involved in developing computer games? You might be surprised to find out that Atari, in spite of its Japanese-sounding name, is actually an American company; that it was an American, too, who set up the Japanese company Sega; and that Nintendo, despite its modern image, has been trading for more than a hundred years.

greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect, contrary to general belief, fact a very necessary natural phenomenon. If the Earth’s atmosphere did not keep in any of the heat we get from the sun, our planet would be far too cous, and for any animals and plants, to live. The problem, however, is that pollution has changed the atmosphere in the last hundred years or so, and this has caused the greenhouse effect to increase too much.

There have been many rises and falls in temperature throughout the history of our planet, for example duthe last Ice Age. But the big problem now is one of time. Today’s temperature changes are happening very quickly. Calculations over the past century have shown that the average global temperature has risen about half a degree Celsius. That might sound like a small change in a long time, but our planet and all its inhabitants are used to changes over millions, not hundreds, of years

If we don’t take serious measures to stop this risetemperature, in future centuries many species of animals and plants will be extinct. Eventually, human life will be threatened, and people will be wondering why we

Mindblowing holidays Most of us dream of holidays in exotic, far-away places. Now it may be possible to take that dream one step further.

Our mind is an amazing tool. As well as dealing with reality, it can create the unreal through imagination. Our imagination is often limited only because we don’t know enough about the subject we are thinking of. A new high-tech company is hoping to help.

‘I decided to investigate this area after seeing Total Recall, a film in which a man is given a new memory,’ says Charlie Boshell, founder of a new ‘virtual holiday’ company called Mindblower. ‘At Mindblower, we can provide the information you need to let your imagination truly wander. You really believe you’re there – on that deserted Caribbean beach or sailing down the Amazon.’

Harmless electrodes are placed on either side of your head and download to your brain all the facts, figures and images of the holiday destination you have chosen. Your mind does the rest, and before you know it you’ve had the trip of a lifetime.

Helen Lovick volunteered to try it out. ‘I chose the African jungle,’ she said. ‘It’s somewhere I’d always wanted to visit, and the experience was amazing. I was a bit anxious to begin with but I soon started to relax. It felt as if I was really there, walking among tall trees and listening to gorillas in the distance. I could feel leaves brushing against my face and the humidity in the air. It was the most incredible experience I’ve ever had. I’ll definitely be coming back for another session.’

Cricket – an incomprehensible sport Cricket is said to be the most English of sports, and it is true that, in all but a few English-speaking countries, no one has a clue how it is played.

Cricket was invented as an official sport long before England’s other well-known sporting invention, football. So why has football become the world’s most popular sport while cricket is played only in the Commonwealth – those English-speaking countries that formed the old British Empire? The answer may be found in the simplicity of football and the complexity of cricket and, possibly more importantly, in the time they take to play. Whereas a match in most modern sports lasts a maximum of a few hours, an international cricket match can take five days to complete, and even then the final score is quite likely to be a draw.

Despite the time factor, cricket is popular in a number of countries around the world, from Australia to India and from South Africa to the Caribbean, so it must have some attractive qualities. Luis, a Chilean living in England who is interested in the sport, gave his opinion. ‘I would say that cricket has a special appeal that other sports don’t have. You don’t have to concentrate on the action from start to finish of a match, and this usually makes it a relaxing, friendly event. If it’s a sunny day and the teams are playing well, I can’t think of a better way of spending my time.’

Revision test: Units 1– 5 No more pizza, thanks. Tim Norton has just broken a world eating record but has declared that he never wants to see Italian food again. His record-breaking feat was to eat a pizza measuring 106 cm in diameter in one three-and-a-half-hour session.

Tim had always been a big eater, but this test was almost beyond him. The pizza was made by his best friend, Anton Nosta, who has been making delicious Italian food in north London for the past eight years. It contained all the ingredients you would normally expect to find in a pizza, plus a few surprises. Anton explains, ‘I wanted this pizza to be a complete meal, including dessert, so in the middle I put different fruits and sugar. Then, when it came out of the oven, I poured on some cream.’

Tim started out at a steady speed, taking a short break every fifteen minutes and drinking water regularly. He laughed with his friends and joked that he wanted extra pepperoni. As time went by, however, the jokes became rarer and the rests more frequent. ‘I can remember, after about an hour and a half, looking at how much was left to eat and thinking that there was no way I’d get through it all.’ But he kept going slowly, and slowly the pizza began to disappear.

He reached the dessert after two hours fifty minutes, and the small crowd cheered as he took yet another break. A little under forty minutes later, the last mouthful went in and the crowd jumped for joy. Not Tim, however. He couldn’t even stand up.

Paint games As Sarah ran through the undergrowth, she could hear people following close behind. If only they hadn’t seen her. But now she had no choice. She burst out of the vegetation and sprinted towards the base, less than sixty metres away. She felt it before she heard it and she knew she was in trouble. The paintball hit her right between the shoulder blades and exploded. If she’d been more experienced, this wouldn’t have happened.

She fell to the ground and dropped the red flag that she’d been holding, as the rules said she must. She could only watch as a member of the other team grabbed the flag and headed off into the undergrowth again. A direct hit by an opposition paintball meant a five-minute penalty before she could return to the game. It was very frustrating.

‘I wasn’t particularly keen when my friend suggested paintballing to me,’ said Sarah, ‘but once you get into it, it’s really exciting. And it’s amazing how long five minutes seems when you’re left out of the game.’

Thousands of people have taken up paintballing in the last few years. It’s a relatively cheap and harmless way to relieve stress, by shooting small balls of paint at people in the opposing team in order to win their flag. As long as you don’t mind getting covered in paint, you have a fantastic time. ‘The adrenaline rush is incredible,’ said Sarah. ‘You feel as if you’re running for your life when you’ve got the flag in your hands. I definitely want to repeat the experience.’

Murder mystery weekend It was a very strange sensation when I entered the hotel dining room that Friday evening. Twelve strangers were eating together in the knowledge that one of us was going to ‘die’ that very night.

The conversations were tense. Was everyone else, like me, wondering why they had chosen to come on a murder mystery weekend? I asked the woman next to me if she had been to anything like this before. She said that she hadn’t, adding that she was beginning to regret it now. Everyone knew that within a couple of hours a body would be found and that the eleven of us left alive would all be under suspicion of murder. We all wondered who the unfortunate victim might be.

After a delicious meal, we returned to our bedrooms. Twenty minutes later, a chilling scream rang through the small hotel – the moment we had all been waiting for. I hurried downstairs and found the hotel staff standing around an inert figure lying on the dining room carpet. It was the woman that I’d been talking to during dinner. She must have been the actress employed to play the victim.

The eleven remaining guests split up so that each of us could start our own investigations. I could hear a sea of questions around me. No weapon had been left at the scene of the crime and nobody admitted that they had seen anything unusual. It was a difficult case to solve. Would any of us succeed in finding the evidence to prove who the murderer was by Sunday evening?

New Year with the Mayans

Last year we persuaded our two children, who are eight and six, to swap our usual New Year’s holiday routine for a jungle adventure in Central America. We set off for Guatemala with a backpack each, and were transported to a world of rainbow-coloured buses and bustling streets.

Our first destination was the ancient Mayan ruins at Tikal. We put up the tent that was going to be our home for the next few nights, and took in the scene around us. We were in dense rainforest, where monkeys howl and parrots screech. The children stared up at the green canopy above them, amazed that they were really in the jungle. Tikal, which was at its height between AD 300 and 800, was the centre of life for more than a million Mayans living in the area. Now the place is deserted and derelict, but still impressive. The temples there are massive, and the steeply graded stone steps which take you to the top of Temple VI are terrifying – several tourists fall from them each year. But the stunning view from the top left even the children speechless.

On New Year’s Eve we arrived in Antigua, the ancient colonial capital that had been destroyed in an earthquake in 1773. We then spent most of New Year’s Day climbing the only active volcano in the area. A local man called Juanxto took us part of the way in his van. We then scrambled and finally limped our way to the top. New Year’s Day on a volcano: you could tell from the kids’ faces that this was not an experience they were likely to forget.

The 1900 house Have you ever pictured yourself as a time traveller? For the Bowler family, the opportunity offered by a TV reality show was too good to miss. They agreed to live for three months exactly as people did more than a century ago. They moved into a house that had been fitted out just as it would have been in the year 1900, without central heating or electricity. What did the Bowlers gain from the experience?

Joyce, the mother, learnt a lot about how women’s lives have changed in the last hundred years. In the 1900 house, preparing food was a daily struggle. She had to spend hours in the kitchen, and the food she eventually managed to produce was rarely eaten by her youngest child, nine-year-old Joe. Keeping the family healthy was a big worry.

‘There were times when I couldn’t cope,’ admitted Joyce. ‘And because of that, family relationships changed. We almost lost those traditional roles: Mum and Dad are in charge, and if anything goes wrong, they’ll sort it out. In fact, on many occasions it was Hilary and Ruth, my 11-year-old twin daughters, who were more mature and were able to calm everybody down.’

So now that her time in the 1900 house is over, how would Joyce compare her two lives? ‘I think that families living in 1900 must have had just as many everyday troubles as we have. Their lives might have been more simple, but there were lots of things back then that we don’t have to deal with now. We should be grateful for all our modern conveniences.’

I kept thinking, ‘I’m competing against world-class athletes,’ and had to remind myself that I was one too. I had to wait around for most of thGames as the pentathlon was on the last day, but thpositive atmosphere in the camp gave me a confidence and so did my fellow athletes.

In the first event, the shooting, my opening shot wfine, and so was my second. But suddenly I was thinking to myself, ‘Do you have any idea where you are? You’re competing in the Olympic Games!’ I lostconfidence then and I didn’t have a very satisfactory result. I’d been worried about the swimming, as I’d haa bit of a disaster before the Games. In the end, I did my best time of the year so I was really pleased. I knew the final event, the run, was going to be tough. Revision test: Units 6–10 Is chocolate good for you?

In the 17th and 18th centuries chocolate was used for medicinal purposes and today it is regularly included in army food rations. Like other sweet food, chocolate encourages our bodies to produce natural chemicals called ‘endorphins’, which generate feelings of pleasure and general well-being. So should it be considered an essential part of a balanced diet?

Recent research at a New York university suggests that your chocolate cravings may have come from earlier generations of your family. A preference for sweet food would have been an advantage to your ancestors. Pre-historic humans were more likely to survive if they looked for food rich in energy and avoided bitter-tasting poisonous food.

Some scientists believe that chocolate can protect you against old age, by slowing down the aging process. It may also help to prevent heart disease. At Harvard University, researchers have carried out experiments into chocolate-eating habits. Their results suggest that if you eat chocolate three times a month you will live almost a year longer than people who eat none. But it’s not all good news. The same research shows that eating too much chocolate can shorten your life. Chocolate’s high fat content means that too much of a good thing can lead to weight problems and an increased risk of heart disease.

People in the USA eat approximately 5 kg of chocolate a year. Europeans tend to eat more, with the Swiss consuming about 10 kg and the Danes more than 13 kg annually. Around the world, millions of people ought to be asking themselves if chocolate is good for them. They will be delighted to know that, in moderation, it is.
