Surviving on a desert island Many of us occasionally think about living on a desert island, but few ever have the chance to experience it. In the TV series ‘Survivor’, sixteen people do just that. For forty days they live together and compete against each other on a tropical island, and at the end of the contest the winner receives one million pounds. This is an extract from the diary of one of the contestants, Mike Foster. ‘When you think about living away from home, you imagine being in another city or even another country, but travelling halfway round the world to a desert island in the Seychelles is not something you consider. But now that I’m here, I must say that I absolutely love it. The scenery is extremely beautiful – there are moments when you feel like staying here forever.

‘Having said that, there are real difficulties. We all miss people back home – we’re so far away from everything here – and we have disagreements and arguments. I’m finding it hard to live without simple things, like soap and shampoo and a comfortable bed, and we’re having some problems finding food, too. Catching fish is quite hard, especially when the sea is rough. We’re getting a bit better at fishing but I have dreams about eating hamburgers or chocolate biscuits!

Job hunting on the Internet A recent survey asked students in their last year of school or university how they were looking for their first job. Their answers were many and varied. However, those who were used to the Internet were having more success than those who were employing more traditional methods, such as looking up advertisements in the newspaper.

The possibilities on the net seem almost endless. By simply typing the word jobs into a search engine, we got a list of nearly thirty million websites coming up on the screen. With so many to choose from, it would be impossible to find anything suitable, so the next step is to look for something more specific. You have to limit your search to the area you want to work in.

As an example, we chose law. Limiting the search meant that ‘only’ 196,000 websites appeared, and the search had taken just 0.46 seconds. The first website on the list was advertising 339 different jobs. As you can see, there were plenty of options.

Obviously, a lot of the available jobs are not open to school or university leavers – they call for higher qualifications or more experience. On top of this, there are factors that you must consider yourself, such as where you want to work and what salary you are prepared to accept. But there are lots of jobs out there, and it’s certainly a good idea to look at the possibilities on the Internet when you’re searching for work.

A climbing accident People have always been attracted to rock-climbing and plenty of accidents have resulted from this hobby. Seventeen-year-old Wendy Sherlock has fallen three times without any injury while rock-climbing, but after her latest accident last Saturday, she is lucky to be alive.

Wendy has been in hospital for two days after an eight-metre fall from a rocky cliff in the Sanderson National Park. She doesn’t remember much about the accident, and it’s not surprising considering her injuries.

‘I’ve got quite a bad head injury – that’s the worst thing,’ Wendy explained. ‘But I’ve also broken my arm and a couple of my ribs and there’s a problem with my left shoulder.’ She doesn’t know how long she will have to stay in hospital, as the doctors haven’t told her yet. Wendy’s doctors are confident that there’s no permanent damage, but they’ve advised her to give up her dangerous sport. El Niño What has caused the recent tropical storms, floods and droughts in different parts of the world? The answer is El Niño. Its name, meaning ‘The Child’ in Spanish, makes it sound harmless, but in fact it has a dramatic and violent effect on the world’s weather.

Normally, winds blow across the southern Pacific Ocean from east to west. In an El Niño year, they blow in the opposite direction, bringing a current of warm water flowing back towards South America. Coastal waters become two to three degrees warmer. Sea levels along the South American coast can rise by as much as fifty centimetres and this causes widespread flooding. At the same time, South-east Asia and Australia are left without the rainfall that they need.

Until recently, El Niño has usually arrived every five to eight years and it has lasted, on average, for about eighteen months. But now this pattern seems to be changing. El Niño comes more often, and it lasts longer. Many scientists believe that this pattern will continue in the future. According to their predictions, El Niño will bring more rainfall and flooding to California and South America, greater famine to countries like Indonesia and worse droughts and forest fires to Australia.

Many people have already lost their lives due to the effects of El Niño and the dangers will increase if the Pacific winds become more unreliable. Nature is a force that we will never be able to control. We will simply have to try to limit its effects.

Don’t leave it too late! If you had an idea for a new invention, what would you do? Would you start work immediately and try to sell your product? Philip Brown had a great invention, but he didn’t make the most of it and missed the opportunity of a lifetime.

Some years ago, Philip came up with an interesting idea. He loved music, and he wanted to be able to listen to it everywhere he went. He examined his cassette recorder and realized that if he made it small enough, he would be able to carry it with him. He made up his mind to try to produce one of these small machines.

The technology was a challenge, but Philip was an electronics expert. Working in his garage, he went to great lengths to make a prototype of his machine, which he called a ‘mini-cassette’. It used small parts and it was powered by batteries. Because it wasn’t much bigger than the size of a cassette, it fitted in his jacket pocket. It was now equipped with small headphones so it could be used in the street or in public transport without annoying other people.

Philip found his machine convenient and practical, but he didn’t make any effort to sell it. A couple of years later, the Walkman was produced by a Japanese company and was hugely successful around the world. If Philip had sold his invention when he first developed it, he would have made a fortune!

They had left as pale, tidy, rather boring-looking young people, with their straight brown hair cut short and each wearing jeans, trainers and a T-shirt. Now they were difficult to recognize.

Tim had grown his hair and had had it put into dreadlocks which spread over his shoulders. Although it was autumn in England, he was wearing sandals and a Malaysian sarong, which is a kind of skirt that is often worn by men in South-east Asia.

Caroline’s appearance was as surprising as Tim’s. The sides of her head were shaved and her ears, which were each pierced in five places, were full of earrings. On the top of her head, her hair, which was very short and spiky, was dyed red. Like her brother, she was tanned dark by the sun.

‘You look cool,’ their little sister Susie said.

‘You certainly look different!’ said Mrs Blake bravely, as she put out her arms to her son and daughter. Caroline looked at Tim quickly. They both knew it would be best to wait a while before they showed their parents the tattoos that they had got on their last night in Singapore.

A wasted journey Although he had broken his leg a few weeks earlier, Kevin Crowther was still looking forward to the Glastonbury music festival. His family told him not to go and suggested that he sold his ticket on the Internet, but Kevin was determined not to miss the festival. He set out for Glastonbury early on Thursday morning.

He had already decided that the best way to get there was by hitchhiking. If you held out your thumb, a kind-hearted driver would stop and you could reach your destination without spending any money. He was wrong. He waited for three hours until a woman offered him a lift. Fame and privacy One drawback of fame might be a lack of privacy – but not every famous person has this problem. The fame of successful writers creates less pressure than that of pop stars, because although we know their names, we may not recognize their faces.

The author of the best-selling Harry Potter books, J. K. Rowling, has appeared in public more often than most writers to give interviews, sign books and accept awards. The history of video games Just over fifty years ago, a young American engineer by the name of Ralph Baer was asked to build the best-ever television set. Baer was very talented and he didn’t find the task difficult. He had wanted to go further than his original objective and incorporate some kind of game into the TV set. The simplicity of these early games would not be satisfying enough for today’s more sophisticated consumers. Since the 1970s, computer games have been getting more and more complicated. The graphics are more realistic because they are computer-generated, and a great deal more money is spent on them by both customers and manufacturers. The games have also become more violent; in fact, they are often blamed for the rise in teenage violence in some countries.

And what about the companies involved in developing computer games? You might be surprised to find out that Atari, in spite of its Japanese-sounding name, is actually an American company; that it was an American, too, who set up the Japanese company Sega; and that Nintendo, despite its modern image, has been trading for more than a hundred years.

Cricket – an incomprehensible sport Cricket is said to be the most English of sports, and it is true that, in all but a few English-speaking countries, no one has a clue how it is played.

Cricket was invented as an official sport long before England’s other well-known sporting invention, football. So why has football become the world’s most popular sport while cricket is played only in the Commonwealth – those English-speaking countries that formed the old British Empire? Paint games As Sarah ran through the undergrowth, she could hear people following close behind. If only they hadn’t seen her. But now she had no choice. She burst out of the vegetation and sprinted towards the base, less than sixty metres away. She felt it before she heard it and she knew she was in trouble. Murder mystery weekend It was a very strange sensation when I entered the hotel dining room that Friday evening. Twelve strangers were eating together in the knowledge that one of us was going to ‘die’ that very night.

New Year with the Mayans

Last year we persuaded our two children, who are eight and six, to swap our usual New Year’s holiday routine for a jungle adventure in Central America. We set off for Guatemala with a backpack each, and were transported to a world of rainbow-coloured buses and bustling streets.

Our first destination was the ancient Mayan ruins at Tikal. We put up the tent that was going to be our home for the next few nights, and took in the scene around us. We were in dense rainforest, where monkeys howl and parrots screech. The children stared up at the green canopy above them, amazed that they were really in the jungle. Tikal, which was at its height between AD 300 and 800, was the centre of life for more than a million Mayans living in the area. Now the place is deserted and derelict, but still impressive. The temples there are massive, and the steeply graded stone steps which take you to the top of Temple VI are terrifying – several tourists fall from them each year. But the stunning view from the top left even the children speechless.

On New Year’s Eve we arrived in Antigua, the ancient colonial capital that had been destroyed in an earthquake in 1773. We then spent most of New Year’s Day climbing the only active volcano in the area. A local man called Juanxto took us part of the way in his van. We then scrambled and finally limped our way to the top. New Year’s Day on a volcano: you could tell from the kids’ faces that this was not an experience they were likely to forget.

They agreed to live for three months exactly as people did more than a century ago. They moved into a house that had been fitted out just as it would have been in the year 1900, without central heating or electricity. What did the Bowlers gain from the experience?

Joyce, the mother, learnt a lot about how women’s lives have changed in the last hundred years. In the 1900 house, preparing food was a daily struggle. She had to spend hours in the kitchen, and the food she eventually managed to produce was rarely eaten by her youngest child, nine-year-old Joe. Keeping the family healthy was a big worry.

‘There were times when I couldn’t cope,’ admitted Joyce. ‘And because of that, family relationships changed. We almost lost those traditional roles: Mum and Dad are in charge, and if anything goes wrong, they’ll sort it out. In fact, on many occasions it was Hilary and Ruth, my 11-year-old twin daughters, who were more mature and were able to calm everybody down.’

So now that her time in the 1900 house is over, how would Joyce compare her two lives? ‘I think that families living in 1900 must have had just as many everyday troubles as we have. Their lives might have been more simple, but there were lots of things back then that we don’t have to deal with now. We should be grateful for all our modern conveniences.’

In the 17th and 18th centuries chocolate was used for medicinal purposes and today it is regularly included in army food rations. Like other sweet food, chocolate encourages our bodies to produce natural chemicals called ‘endorphins’, which generate feelings of pleasure and general well-being. Recent research at a New York university suggests that your chocolate cravings may have come from earlier generations of your family. A preference for sweet food would have been an advantage to your ancestors. Some scientists believe that chocolate can protect you against old age, by slowing down the aging process. It may also help to prevent heart disease. The same research shows that eating too much chocolate can shorten your life.
