How to apply for a PhD

If you're considering further study after yourcoursework degree, it's important that you've chosenthe right degree to enable you to continue. If you'd liketo pursue a Research Higher Degree (a Masters byResearch or a PhD), your current degree needs to havea research component of at least 25% of your fourthyear or Masters level. If you think you can only doanother degree if you secure funding, you'll need towork doubly hard to obtain a high enough mark to beawarded a scholarship.

Having selected a supervisor (who has agreed to supervise you in the

event that you are accepted to undertake the degree), all you need to dois apply!

We would like to encourage you to make your application to theuniversity on-line, that way you will receive email confirmation andstatus updates tracking the progress of your application to a decision.

    What is a GRE:

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) consists of two separate tests:-the General Test-and the Subject Test (Optional). The General Test is composed of three parts:verbal, quantitative,

    and analytical writing

The verbal and the quantitative tests each yield a separate scorebetween 200-800. Scores on the analytical writing test are reported in-point increments along a scale of 0 to 6.It is essential that you do well--at least 550on each test (600+ is evenbetter)--to get into most doctoral programs. Master's programs are lesscompetitive, so lower scores (450-500on each of the tests) are less of aproblem. You will probably have trouble being admitted into anyprogram with scores less than 450 on one of the tests.

How to write a statement of purpose (SoP):

If you've decided to apply for graduate studies, almostall universities will require you to write a Statement ofPurpose (SoP).

This letter, usually 1-2 pages in length, can make orbreak your application. Regardless of your grade pointaverage (GPA), work experience, test scores, orundergraduate mastery of your potential future area of

study, your Statement of Purpose is very influential atmost institutions when determining your candidacyfor admission.

Personal of StatementI open this statement with explaining the reasons behind my application to the Fulbrightprogram. My reason for applying is twofold: first to expand my qualification in IT fieldand second to prepare myself for a better future carrier in Iraq.

My diverse work and experiences have constantly given me a clear understanding of theopportunities which are available to me. I have always been as a child fascinated with theidea of becoming a successful lecturer at the University of technology. I came from amiddle class family which usually parents have less opportunities for their children tobecome professors or doctors. This case has always invoked me to work hard to achievemy goals. This was sometimes quit difficult if you know that I have to work hard with myfather in supporting our big family. I think by becoming an engineer I have reached thestage where I achieved my family emption and also part of my objectives.

On the other side, my work at the University of Technology as a computer engineer ledme to realize the importance of this field in the facilitating of our life in Iraq. I have beencharged with the cross-function E-University Unit where we design the University'sofficial website, thus made the connection of the University with outside world possibledespite all the obstacles we faced. In addition, I have the honor in serving with Iraqi-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry. I have professionally learned documenttranslation and worked directly with numerous coordinators and pressmen on a widevariety of projects.

I suppose that the Fulbright program will make me one of those who will contribute to fillthe professional gap in information technology of my country. I possess a board-basededucation in computer engineering but in order to attain what I am aiming for. Aninternational exposure coupled with the immense opportunity in the US will help mefulfill this target.Based on the criteria and conditions of this program and according to my area ofexpertise I found myself eligible to apply.
