Introduction to Oxford Art Online

The OAO is a massive database consisting of the Grove Art Online, the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, the Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.

A basic search on the OAO is easy and provides up-to-date results from all 5 major database within OAO and supplies biographical, image, and subject results.

OAO has 16 thematic guides for easy researching on the most popular subjects.

Wikipedia-style linking, connecting related topics and artists.

We will look at the features of each database within Oxford Art Online in the following slides and accompanying tutorial.

The Basics:

The GAO is the electronic version of the 34 volume Dictionary of Art, plus special bibliographic information only available online.

Contains over 45,000 articles covering the fine arts, architecture, decorative crafts, interior design, and furniture.

Over 21,000 biographies23,000 subject entries 6,000 art images and line drawings

Grove Art Online

Provides learning resources and guides for students and teachers.

Links to biographies from other online resources, including the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Updated regularly (at least three times a year) to bring you the most current information as it becomes available.

The articles in the Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and the Concise Oxford Dictionary of

The Benezit Dictionary of Artists has been in print since 1911, but is newly electronic only on the OAO.

Over 190,000 entries on artists from the well-know to the obscure.
