During World War I, car production stopped and only began again at the end of 1919 with the design of new models. It was the beginning of a new era. In the early twenties, the masterpiece RL, was presented on the market. Additionally, in 1923, Ugo Sivocci achieved a great win in the Targa Florio race, and Vittorio Jano’s triumph in the first World Championship, led to the inclusion of a laurel wreath around the Biscione. Alfa Romeo (also known as the Casa del Biscione) enjoyed a period of great popularity, with internationally famous iconic models, a series of racing suc-cesses and the production of new aeronautical engines and industrial vehicles. However, with a new global crisis, the economic situation became difficult. Despite Alfa Romeo’s image being one of a solid company, viewed with admiration even by Henry Ford, the real-ity was different. In 1933, weighed down by debts, the Casa del Biscione was purchased by IRI, the state-owned Institute for Industrial Reconstruction, and received huge support from the Italian government. This turned the facto-ry into an efficient industrial company, able to produce cars, aircraft engines and heavy duty vehicles. In 1935, the company was militarised and in 1939 the first stone was laid for the new branch in Pomigliano d’Arco, near Naples, devot-ed to aeronautical production. The racing com-pound was entrusted to the Scuderia Ferrari, leading to the production of many legendary racing cars: 6C 2300, 6C 2500, 8C 2300 and 8C 2900 B. But then World War II began. After the war, production slowly started up again. “Alfetta” 158 and 159 models dominated the first two World Championships in the new Formula 1 class, and the 1900 model made its début on the market, as the first car produced without a separate chassis, on an assembly line. In the Fifties a period of enormous develop-ment began: the Giulietta and Giulia, two celeb-rity stars in famous films, brought unexpected growth which raised the Alfa Romeo profile be-yond all expectations. hellohelloBefore reading this article, ask yourself the ques-tion: “do you know the meaning of the Biscione which is one of the symbols of Milan?”If you look around you, sooner or later you will notice a strange emblem with a sort of crowned viper with 7 spirals and a person in its mouth. Apparently its story goes back to the first cru-sade when Captain Ottone Visconti killed a Moor in a duel. According to the custom of that time, he took the dead man’s arms, which included a shield painted with a serpent eating a Christian.On his return from the crusade he used the ser-pent as a victory symbol for his family, while changing a detail: he put a Moor in the Serpent’s mouth. As you know history repeats itself now and again.One century later, in 1277, the Visconti fam-ily gained control over Milan, thus the viper started to be the emblem of the city too, and was then adopted by other important fami-lies or businesses. So any time you see some-thing like a Biscione (our name for a large grass snake) it may remind you of Milan. In fact in Poland it is still in the seal of two cities: Sanok and Pruzhany, due to the mar-riage of our Bona Sforza to King Zygmunt I. More recently, the Biscione became the em-blem of the Inter football club, of the Alfa Romeo car manufacturer and, in a version with a flower in its mouth, of the mass media com-pany Mediaset, which belongs to Berlusconi. Well, all this is just to tell you something more about one of the most important enterprises in Milan, originally set in the outskirts of the Portello area (a stop of the Lilla metro 5 metro line), where, on 24 June 1910, a new company named A.L.F.A. Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Anonymous Lombard Automobile Factory) was of-ficially registered, to build exclusive, futuristic cars.Their great ambitions were temporarily damp-ened in 1909, with the arrival of a severe eco-nomic crisis and despite the success of the first historical car “24 HP, A.L.F.A.” the company was unable to take off. In 1915, a young entrepre-neur from Naples named Nicola Romeo, on ob-taining an important order for the production of shells, set up a small factory very close to the Portello area. But the workshop was not large enough to meet production needs. The troubles of both industries were solved in February 1918, when some investors unified them in the new Alfa Romeo company, under the Biscione sym-bol.

How it is that our Biscione went to America?

up in Arese to start the ultra-modern Alfetta, while the Pomigliano d’Arco plant had to produce Alfasud. Both of these fast and technologically advanced cars were appreciated by the market. To enter the city centre (the area within the socalled“Cerchia dei Bastioni”, a circular area which, to give you an idea, starts from Porta Venezia on one side, Piazza XXIV Maggio on the other), you have to pay a tariff in the Area C system, about €5 per entrance. The Area C system operates Mon-Fri, 7.30-19.30. For further information, click on the Area C banner on the website www.comune.milano.it. Petrol stations in the city close for lunch, Satur-day afternoons and Sunday. There are a few self-service pumps in the city. Motorway service stations are open 24 hrs a day. To park in the streetside areas marked by blue lines, you need to buy a SostaMilano card, on sale at the “ATM Point” in the Duomo metro station (open Mon-Sat 7.45-20.15), and in Cadorna, Centrale F.S., Loreto and Romolo metro stations, as well as in many bars and to-bacconists. The cards are also sold directly by the attend-ants near the parking areas (they have uniforms and ID cards). You mark the start of stay on the card by scratch-ing the year, month, day, and time. Various privately-run carparks also exist (blue P sign). If you are driving into Milan, you can use the multistorey car parks at the Metro stations Cascina Gobba, Famagosta, Bisceglie, Molino Dorino and Lampugnano, open 6.00-01.00, the cheapest parking in the city. Don’t leave your car in areas marked by the tow-away symbol, or in areas marked by yellow lines (areas reserved for residents). Post information, tel. 803160, Mon-Sat, 8.00-20.00, www.poste.it.• Public transportIn Milan, buses, trams and metro (underground) trains are run by a company named ATM. Ordinary tickets cost €1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (newsa-gents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some sta-tions), and from bars displaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weekly, monthly or yearly season tickets are available. The largest ATM ticket sales and info offices are the ATM Point information offices in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale, Loreto and Romolo Metro stations, open Mon-Sat 7.45-19.00. The ordinary ticket should be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Metro turnstiles, or before getting on an FNM train. The same ticket can be used for 90 minutes from the time franked on the ticket, with any combination of buses and trams (the magnetic ticket should be franked on every journey), but with just the one Metro journey, or one journey on a Passante Fer-roviario train, or on a FNM train (within city limits). The one-day ticket (abbonamento giornaliero, €4.50) and the two-day ticket (abbonamento bigiornaliero, €8.25) last 24/48 hours respectively from the first franking: frank the magnetic ticket on every journey. The Metro system consists of 4 lines, number 1 (red), 2 (green), 3 (yellow), and the “Passante Ferroviario” (S trains). The FNM is the privately-run train service running from Stazione Nord in Piazza Cadorna. For info on FNM trains, there is an info office in the Cadorna station, open 7.00 to 20.00 every day. www.lenord.it Metro trains run from around 6.15 un-til 00.30, except on Saturday nights when trains run till about 02.00. During the night there is a replacement bus service for parts of lines 1 and 3. There are large inter-change car parks at the stations Lampugnano, Bisceglie (MM1), Cascina Gobba, Famagosta (MM2), open 7.00-01.00 (overnight parking possible). To get to the Rho Fi-era trade fair district during fairs you can buy a return ticket at €5 (Andata/ritorno Rho Fiera) or a day ticket (Giornaliero fiera) €7. The normal one or two day ticket is not valid for getting to Rho Fiera. For public transport info, toll-free info at 800.808181 (7.30-19.30), www.atm-mi.it. The “Radiobus” service, operating from 20.00 to 02.00, is like a collective taxi service. A very comfort-able air-conditioned minicoach picks you up and takes you where you want to go. You have to book by phone

at 02.4803.4803, preferably well in advance – say a few hours – or even just before your trip, but in this case you run the risk of not getting a place as well as spending ages listening to a recorded message. Cost €4 if you pay on the bus, less if you buy the ticket (ordinary ATM ticket + Radiobus ticket, total €3.50) in advance. This service may seem complicated, but it is so convenient and comfortable that it’s well worth the effort.• RailwaysMost trains leave from the Stazione Centrale. Train information can be obtained from the information of-fice at the station, or by phone, 892021, or best of all by Internet (www. trenitalia.com). Remember that any train ticket should be franked using the yellow machines situated at the near end of the platforms, just before boarding the train. A return ticket should be franked again before the return journey. If you forget, you will be fined! If you do forget, find the conductor on the train as soon as possible, and the fine will be reduced. For many trains, seat booking is obligatory. In any case it is a good idea to buy your ticket early (at least the day before) and book your seat (small extra charge). Saves frustration queuing while your train is about to depart. Be sure to claim your booked seat within ten minutes after departure. For the differently abled and people with sight prob-lems, there is a phone number for the whole of Italy: 199.30.30.60, operating every day, 7.00-21.00. Fer-rovie Nord trains leave from Cadorna and run to vari-ous locations north of Milan, including the lakes and Malpensa airport. See www.lenord.it• Safety and securityIn Milan, like most large cities, there is a problem of small time theft. Take care of personal possessions at all times! Don’t leave your bags unattended even for a moment, particularly in crowded locations like Piazza Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Also take care in and around the Central Station, and when on trams and metro during the rush hour. If, at the station or airport, someone approaches you and offers you a taxi, this is not the normal taxi and it will cost much more. This is happening particularly at Linate airport, the taxi turns out to be a chauffeur-driven car with a bill to match. Beware of buying fake merchandise on the street, it will be low quality and it’s also against the law. People selling roses in restaurants have noth-ing to do with the restaurant, just say no (unless you want one, of course!). If you give money to the many beggars in the city and on the Metro trains you are financing organized crime.• TaxisIt is almost impossible to stop a taxi on the street in Milan: you have to locate one of the taxi-ranks (see map pages), or call one of the radio taxi firms (02.4040, 02.8585, 02.4000, 02.6969). A few taxis accept credit cards. If in doubt about price, ask the driver for an estimate before setting off. On-line esti-mates at www.milanotaxi.it• TelephonesThe 02 dialling code for Milan is incorporated into phone numbers. If you are calling Italy from abroad, you have to include the “0” of this prefix, ie +39.02.(number). Numbers starting 339, 347, 348 etc. are for mobile phones, these calls cost more. Numbers starting with 0 are for fixed phones, 1 for public utili-ties (police etc.), 3 for mobiles, 8 for toll-free num-bers.

• Until 30 January. “La Maison du Roi, 1690-1792” presents 26 life-size mannequins, complete with uni-forms, equipment and original weapons, the fruit of over 3 years of detailed research of more than 4,000 items including historical documents, paintings, en-gravings, portraits, prints and rare authentic pieces kept in private and public collections, in particular in the Musée de l’Armée in Paris, the Château de l’Emperi in Salon de Provence, the National Museum in Zurich and the Château de Penthes Museum in Ge-neva. To make the uniforms over 250 m. of fine cloth was needed, supplied by the same English company that for 200 years has dressed the Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace; over 300 metres of various cloth and materials in silk, wool and linen for linings and reinforcements; as well as 500 m. of gold braid; over 1400 m. of silver braid of 4 different designs, over 250 m. of various braid that made up the “Livrée du Roy”, hand woven on antique looms in Egypt.
