When two organisms compete over the same resource
Intraspecific competition – same species
Interspecific competition – separate species

Mutualism
ecological interactions between two species in which both benefit.
A species may be so dependent that it cannot live without its mutualistic partner

Predation
biological interaction where a predator (an organism that is hunting) feeds on its prey (the organism that is attacked)

relationship between organisms of different species where one organism, the parasite, benefits at the expense of the host.

Keystone species
A species that is critical to the ecosystem because it affects the survival and number of many other species in its community.

Keystone Species Sea otters eat sea urchins. Sea urchins eat kelp. When
sea otters are present, lush kelp forests grow along the west coast of North America. These kelp forests provide a habitat for many fishes and other aquatic animals. When sea otters disappeared due to overhunting, the sea urchins ate all the kelp. All the species depended on the kelp also disappeared. Sea otters are an example of a keystone species.
