A BRIEF HISTORY OF YOUNG MARINE SPACES

The Acronym SPACES refers to Summer Programs of Adventures Challenges Encampments, and Schools. The SPACES program began in 2000, when the program started it included a few special events (Civil War Adventure 1 & 2, SCUBA School, National Leadership Academy and Space Academy). The Program also included Army Cadet Exchange program or ACES with opportunities for Young Marines to go to other countries and their cadets to come to ours. The ACES program predated the SPACES program as far back as the early 1990’s. The SPACES program during the early 2000’s also included the Regimental and Division encampments schools, and the Military Order of World Wars program (MOWW). In 2004 the SPACES program was changed to make it more streamlined and efficient for summer programs for the Young Marines. The ACES program became a National Directors Special Program (NDSP). This program was subsequently withdrawn from the SPACES program as well as MOWW, the Regimental and Division Schools and encampments. Since its early beginnings the SPACES program has undergone numerous changes to its program to ensure that the Young Marines receive the best summer time adventures possible. For the 2016 SPACES program we will host (10) events. This is by far the most ever hosted at one time. This will ensure that 542, Young Marines have a chance to participate in some really amazing adventures.

Young Marine Attendance Policy

1. A Young Marine that attends a SPACES event must have (2) consecutive overnight events away from home without any incidents. These overnights can be defined as:

a. Two consecutive nights away from home. b. Two separate weekend events (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

This policy is being set into place to help guarantee that the Young Marines selected will have the maturity and ability to be away from home from 1 to 3 weeks.

2. Young Marines must meet the minimum requirements set forth in each event. There is no latitude for allowing a Young Marine a waiver. (I.e. if a Young Marine must have a 1st class swim qualification for SCUBA; that will not be waived.) This is to ensure our Risk Management procedures are being followed.

3. All Young Marines units should strive to have all rank and requirements by 1 December 2015. Failure to do so could delay or complicate the Young Marine’s SPACES application.

4. A Young Marine must act according to the Young Marines’ Creed, Obligation and Code of Conduct. A Young Marine may be sent home from a SPACES event at the parents expense if:

a. Serious behavioral issues are being demonstrated. b. A Young Marine is presenting a danger to themselves or others. c. Medical or psychological issues that the National HQ’s was not made aware of prior

to the event. d. If a Young Marine is not found to be physically able to participate in the SPACES

event.

5. **NOTE**: Young Marines will not be sent home without prior consent from the National Headquarters. As well as communication with the Young Marine’s Chain of Command.

6. Special needs for a Young Marine must be communicated prior to any SPACES event. The National Headquarters will need time to allocate resources to accommodate any Young Marine with special needs. (I.e. dietary, physical, emotional, or educational, etc.)

7. A Young Marine will be denied a SPACES event or removed from the pending status if:

a. The Unit fails to stay in compliance with their financial records and is locked out of the database.

b. A Young Marine who is a member of a unit that closes must transfer to an active unit or they will not be able to participate in a SPACES event, even if the Young Marine is already approved to attend.

8. Young Marines Staff must turn in an After Action Report (AAR) within 30 days at the end of the SPACES event. Failure to do this may preclude a Young Marine from:

a. Young Marines Staff Ribbons. b. Young Marines Staff Billets for the next year’s SPACES. c. Young Marines Master Divers School.

11. Certain SPACES require the RA’s to sit back and monitor while the Young Marines run the SPACES event. Other SPACES will be hosted by the specific event and duties of the RA’s will vary. RA’s responsibilities and duties will be clarified with the event they are attending.

12. Registered Adults must turn in an AAR within 30 days from the end of the SPACES event. Failure to do this may preclude them from future SPACES events.

13. Registered Adults may not be chosen for an event if:

The Young Marine leadership development process at the National Academy is designed to enhance leadership skills in a way Young Marines have never experienced. The Academy prides itself on introducing experiential learning mixed with self-discovery to challenge Young Marines to overcome not only daily leadership tasks but overcoming the battle within themselves to make the right decisions when the situation dictates. On a larger scale, the Academy assists Unit Commanders with the product created at the end of a Young Marine’s career. We do this by molding law abiding citizens who can operate at a higher level than their peers and understand the necessary work ethic required to attack any goal, vision, dream, or lifestyle that the individual Young Marine desires. We work only to inspire Young Marines to change themselves and not only the people around them but the world if they choose to do so. Young Marines will partake in many lessons learned because they will have the freedom to fail with the opportunity to succeed. We accomplish this with a curriculum designed to challenge Young Marines physically, mentally, and morally. Our curriculum and environment prepares Young Marines with basic life skills that continue to strengthen the lives of America’s youth.

The purpose of Advanced Leadership School is to prepare Young Marines for leadership roles and responsibilities ranging from the individual unit to division. This course is designed to challenge Young Marines in management of people, events, and individual unit meetings with emphasis on mentoring and responsibilities of a Young Marine Advanced Leader and serves as a refresher course in field skills with a concentration on planning and operational risk management. SENIOR LEADERSHIP SCHOOL

Description: The three training pillars of the Young Marines Program are teaching self-discipline, team building, and leadership development. The Senior Leadership School (SLS) is the second step leadership school in the Young Marines Program. It is designed to help those Young Marines who have completed Junior Leadership School (JLS) (YM/Sergeants and Staff Sergeants) master the art of interpersonal and leadership skills. Upon completion of this school, the Young Marine graduate should have a working knowledge of the nine performance objectives in the Senior Guide book.

Course Overview: The purpose of Senior Leadership School is to prepare Young Marines for leadership roles

and responsibilities within their unit. This course is designed to challenge Young Marines in management of

people, events, and individual unit meetings with emphasis on mentoring and responsibilities of a Young

Marine senior leader including the curriculum for the Recruit Instructor certification. The Course also meets the

needs of many students with other interests and prepares Young Marines with basic life skills.

Course Objectives:

1. To challenge Young Marine leadership styles inside and outside the classroom.

2. To prepare Senior Leaders to become certified Recruit Instructors.

3. To introduce new styles and methods of teaching, training, and planning.

4. To instill a sense of confidence while leading Young Marines and recruits by giving them the tools

to be successful.

Course Environment: The course instruction will consist of the following teaching methods: Lecture, participative, group discussion, and practical application.

Since the course will only average around 40 training hours most training will be practical with all classes averaging one hour of instruction per class and two hours per practical application. This includes breaks, testing, and team building where applicable. Certain practical classes are designed to promote a high level of student morale, team work, and decisive thinking to create a higher level of interest in the classroom. All team building, motivational speeches, notable leader mentions, and lessons learned will relate to one or more of the classes in the course instruction for that day.

Young Marine National Academy Physical Fitness Test Explained

Description: The physical fitness test performed at the National Leadership Academy (NLA) is administered without the YM being allowed to do modified events.

Why? This is done in order for the YM to see where they are physically in their development. At the Academy, Young Marines will only be permitted to do non-modified PFT events; dependent on their gender and age. If the YM does not succeed in totaling enough points to pass, the YM will be allowed to do modified events to increase their overall score. All NLA PFTs will be entered into their database records. An overall passing PFT score that results from modified events will not be scored in the school ranking higher than that of PFT scores passed without modification. At any point in time a Young Marine does not pass the PFT they will not graduate the leadership school. The YM will receive a Certificate of Attendance (COA) provided they meet all other school requirements. Young Marines who received a COA due to a failed PFT will become eligible for a certificate of completion when they successfully complete a PFT within six (6) months of the schools completion date; however, the PFT must be monitored by a Regimental or Division Commander or their designated representative.

Purpose: Many Registered Adults and Young Marines don’t realize that the modified events associated with the PFT are not designed to be used forever. They are designed to build strength in the Young Marines as their bodies grow, strengthen, and develops. If Young Marines are allowed to consistently do modified events we do them a disservice. Modified events are designed to give Young Marines a means to still be competitive while challenging them to move towards non – modified events. We want Young Marines to be passionate about improvement. We truly believe that if Young Marines challenge themselves to discipline their bodies so they can discipline their minds allowing other positive decisions to follow. This is what makes physical fitness indispensable from the leadership development process.

For any leadership school or academy Young Marines should come prepared to pass the PFT.

COWBOY EXPERIENCE (Return)

Description: A cowboy is taught from a young age to consistently put his livestock ahead of himself. When he gets up in the morning and saddles up, his horse is his number one priority. A cowboy is taught if you take care of your animals, those animals will take care of you. When you have morning feedings to do, a cowboy always feeds his animals before he feeds himself. When the day is done, a seasoned “hand” will always turn out his horse and put him to bed for the night before he himself heads to the house to take care of his own personal needs.

Cowboys are notorious for being men of few words. They are men of action. This is how they lead. When working a horse, they watch and learn from the horse and then pick their response based on what that horse needs. They never respond out of anger, but they will be firm out of discipline. A great Cow Boss, is an exceptional leader, as he leads by example and gives plenty of room for a horse or a “hand” to figure out the problem themselves.

Though a cowboy can spend many hours in the saddle by himself, he always is working in a team. When riding, it is a constant dance of teamwork. The rider pays attention to what the horse is communicating and likewise provides leadership by directing the horse with clear and effective communication. Through horsemanship, a rider learns valuable lessons about leading with respect while meeting your partner where they are.

ORME ADVENTURE (NEW)

Description: In 1929, Charles H. Orme, Sr. and Minna Vrang Orme (inducted into the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame in 1989) began a personal adventure that has become the history of The Orme School. They left their dairy farm in Phoenix and bought a 26,000 acre ranch in the 4,000 foot grasslands of central Arizona.

Established in 1929, The Orme School is a unique, college-preparatory, co-educational boarding and day school for grades 8 through 12, set on 300 acres in rural Arizona. Our mission is to develop sound character, scholastic growth, and intellectual curiosity, as well as to enable students to succeed at the college of their choice, and in life. Our community is structured, supportive, and diverse. We awaken untapped potential; encourage inner resourcefulness, integrity, respect and accountability for self and others. Our challenging curriculum features a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on learning and both environmental and aesthetic awareness. From the academic program to residential and community life, the guiding principles of Excellence, Tradition, and Character are applied to every facet of an Orme education.

The Adventure: The Orme School is allowing the Young Marines to use their dormitories, cafeterias and classrooms to host an exciting adventure. Complete with hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, camping, rock climbing and rappelling and survival courses. This adventure is going to be an exciting time for the Young Marines and Registered Adults involved. The Young Marines will be set up in tribes with tribal competitions, teamwork and camaraderie, Young Marines will be able to meet other Young Marines from all over the country and make new friends.

SCUBA Adventure

Description: The SCUBA Adventure gives Young Marines the opportunity to become thoroughly qualified in the “Aquatic” environment. Young Marines will be taught in the classroom, pool and ocean. Once the Young Marine has completed this course they will obtain their Basic, Advanced, Rescue SCUBA Diver and Life Guard Certifications. Registered Adult Chaperones will also participate in certain courses and all dives. Registered Adults must be physically fit and must be able to carry the same SCUBA gear as the Young Marines. All attendees will perform a prequalification test upon arrival. This test will include being able to swim 200 yards non-stop with (5) different swim strokes, tread water for 5 minutes with hands above water, and run two miles. Young Marines must be team players. Registered Adults must be able to learn from Young Marines. This is a very physically and mentally demanding course. Young Marines and Registered Adults must be prepared for long days, lots of physical activities and be able to trust and rely on your buddy diver.

Young Marines will earn the following Certifications:

Basic open Water: You learn to use basic scuba gear, including a mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, buoyancy

control device and a tank. The equipment you wear varies, depending upon whether you’re diving

in tropical, temperate or cold water. You try out different specialties while gaining experience under the

supervision of your Instructor

Advanced Open water: The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different

adventure dives. You try out different specialties while gaining experience under the supervision of your

Instructor. You log dives and develop capabilities as you find new ways to have fun scuba diving. During the

Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of

deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and

helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.

Rescue Diver: SCUBA divers describe the PADI Rescue Diver course as the most challenging, yet most

rewarding course they’ve ever taken. Why? Because you learn to prevent and manage problems in the water,

and become more confident in your skills as a diver, knowing that you can help others if needed. During the

course, you learn to become a better buddy by practicing problem solving skills until they become second

nature. Plus, the course is just fun – it’s serious, but still allows for lots of laughter in between the focused

learning.

Master SCUBA Diver Adventure

Description: “The Master Diver Program” gives Young Marines the opportunity to obtain one of the most coveted of diving certifications and become proficient in the “Aquatic” environment. The Master Scuba Diver rating places you in an elite group of respected divers who have earned this rating through both significant experience and scuba training. When you flash your Master Scuba Diver card, people know that you’ve spent time underwater in a variety of environments and had your share of dive adventures.

This will be one of the most challenging SPACES events you will ever attend, You will dive 3 times a day and learn how to use the ERDP charts to allow you to use Nitrox air on dives. You will start out with a skill assessment and retention test in the pool after passing that. All divers will start their ocean dives starting off at 30 feet and ending at 130 feet. There will be a minimum of (4) night dives 2 from the beach and 2 onto wrecks. In all you will receive (8) certifications for completion of this course and up to (6) hours of college credit.

In order to ensure that the Pre-Dive workout schedule is successful and that any Young Marines or Registered Adults do not burn themselves out. The Schedule should be used as follows:

All PT exercises are suggested as a step by step program. The exercises will build endurance for theentire week (i.e. Monday 2 mile run and Swim, Tuesday Push-ups, Swim, Wednesday Crunches, Swim,Thursday 2 mile run and swim, Friday Crunches and all swim techniques).

For the swim work your way up to a 200 meter swim per stroke. This is what you will be doing at thecourse in order to obtain your lifeguard training. As well as swimming down to shipwrecks on the seafloor. The 2 min breath hold is intended to help you with your breathing and expand your lungs.

If you wish to do all of the exercises every day and can handle it go for it. Otherwise, it is best to workyour way up the exercises chart. This is a low stress, medium cardio aquatic workout meant to gearyou up for the SCUBA school and afford you the best opportunity to do well in the course.

In the initials section the Young Marine or RA must have their Unit Commander Initial off in the box thatthese exercises were completed. In the case that they are not done at a normal drill date then the UCcan either test the Young Marine or RA on the past weeks exercises and initial off or the UC can usethe honor system that it has been accomplished.

Diet is important so for the (4) months of pre-dive try to lay off of as much fast food as you can andclear your arteries. The main thing we are trying to accomplish for a good experience SCUBA diving isthat the arteries carry oxygen effortlessly; breathing is regulated by a good cardio vascular system.Remember you are going to breathe a limited supply of oxygen out of a tank on your back and you willneed to conserve energy, and oxygen flow as much as possible. Get used to eating bananas they arethe best way to get potassium into your body and ensure that the lactic acid leaves your muscles soyou do not cramp up swimming.

The Schedule ends after the 1st week of June please do not PT or swim after that, Give your musclestime to rebuild and become stronger, rest your body and pack your bags. As soon as you hit the deck atSCUBA school we will have fast paced days starting with PT at 0530 and classes end at 2000, racktime at 2200, Reveille at 0500 and the day starts again.

Master Divers Course PT is at 0600 your day will end at 2000, for the night dives your days will end by2300. Reveille is adjusted as needed.

Some of the other things you may want to work on are anxiety and claustrophobia; these are commonissues with SCUBA diving. Claustrophobia happens when your eyes can only see forward this makesyour vision narrow and gives some people the feeling of being closed in. Anxiety happens when youget over excited and start becoming scared that something may happen you start to play the, what “if”game in our head. Just relax and try not to what “if” anything only 1% of people have these issues inthe course.

Both SCUBA Schools are a relaxed environment; you will be able to use your cell phones at the end ofthe day. If your phone usage affects your performance or adversely affects the Young Marinesorganization. Your phone will be confiscated for the duration of the course.

Sailing Adventure (NEW)

Description: PHLAS Sailing Academy, PHLAS stands for Planet Hope Land and Sea, Inc. The organization was started in the 1990's to serve young people in the Washington DC area. Adventurous activities such as back packing, rock climbing, hiking, camping and skiing were some of the early activities but within the first few years, the focus turned towards sailing.

Sailing allows for mentors and Young Marines to spend quality time together working as a team. Young Marines will easily participate and take leadership roles on the crew of a sailboat.

The Chesapeake Bay is a perfect place to cruise on a yacht. Protected from ocean swells, great summer winds, waterfront towns to visit, protected anchorages and sandy beaches!

The Cruising camp will enable Young Marines to have a unique adventure not found at a fixed location camp. Young Marines will have opportunities to:

Chart Courses each day Learn to handle the rigging on a yacht Take the helm and navigate the Bay Sleep aboard their yacht Beach bonfires Swimming Help prepare meals in the galley Catch blue crabs! Fishing for Rockfish

Young Marines will be able to learn through this adventurous sailing activity the necessity of boating and personal safety, Coast Guard regulations, planning a boat trip and how to properly handle a sailing vessel.

We will be on board (3) Sailing vessels, the Young Marines and Registered Adults will be split between the boats (i.e. 6 YM’s, 1 RA and the boat Captain).

Electronics Policy Use of cell phones, tablet/laptop computers, video or mp3 devices, gaming systems, etc. is not allowed on cruising camps. Campers may bring a cell phone for emergency purposes only. The cell phone will be kept in a waterproof lockbox aboard the yacht. The captain will have a cell phone aboard and parents will be given that number prior to departure.

FEMA Cert. Camp (NEW)

Description: The purpose of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) School is to help citizens understand their responsibility in preparing for disaster. It also increases their ability to safely help themselves, their family and their neighbors. FEMA recognizes the importance of preparing citizens. The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) and the National Fire Academy adopted and expanded the CERT materials believing them

applicable to all hazards.

The CERT course will benefit any citizen who takes it. The individual will be better prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster. Additionally, if a community wants to supplement its response capability after a disaster, civilians can be recruited and trained as neighborhood, business, and government teams that, in essence, will be auxiliary responders. These groups can provide immediate assistance to victims in their area, organize spontaneous volunteers who have not had the training, and collect disaster intelligence that will assist professional responders with prioritization and allocation of resources following a disaster.

Basic Level 1 CERT training is open to anyone who is interested in Life Saving Skills, Disaster Preparedness, Fire Suppression, Climbing, Light Search & Rescue, Triage, and Head to Toe Assessment. The class is a total of 21 hours that must be completed to receive the FEMA Certificate of graduation. Certification in First-Aid/CPR class will also be provided.
