Patent are a unique source of information because what is published in patents are most of the time not published elsewhere. Patents are a link beetween technology and research and are also a link between reasearch laboratories and industries. If patents are useful to protect the Intellectual Asset of an enterprise or a research laboratory patents information are an invaluable tool to describe the technologies, their trends and all the whereabouts describe in patents. They give access to: What is doing what with who ? Where ? And when ?
Example: Query about « welding and apparatus »
Acces to the technologies through IPC
Access to strategic domains through words from titles and abstracts
Export – The role of standards and foreign rules Export must be the ultimate goal to bring money inside the country and then to participate at the global increase of the balance of foreign trade. But, many countries develop rules and standards to protect itselves againts exporters.
To be able to know the trend in international standards and rules is crucial for the contractor if its main customer exports.
The example of the REACH new standard in the European community is interesting. By excluding PARABEN from the list of the conservatives it pushes mainy companies to change cosmetic basic formulation for instance. REACH places responsibility on industry to manage the risks that chemicals may pose.
Another example is the actual move to exclude palm oil from food, since palm oil may contribute to the development of Cholesterol and then to heart diseases.

Get the right information, Analyze it Comment it Discuss it with experts Provide recommendations to decision makers
Open your mind to new domains of application. Think different Include in expert groups people from different horizons
Summary
The information is a catalyst, but you must use it in the right way
Conclusion
Think different, (thinking out of the box) use your competences and facilities in different ways. Today, the facilities offered by the IT and by the open source information open the way to a new vision of the development. The contractors, SMEs, individuals, researchers, may become innovative and with the help of industry and the public policy power (PPP Private and Public Partnerships) they can develop new products and services to be exported. In this presentation we saw only a tiny bit of what can be done. But you must try and explore this new way to look to your knowledge and competences. Innovation is the key of success, and will be the 21st century drive.
