EXPLORE THE

ETERNAL

Worship (Sundays, 9 & 11 am) Some have suggested that a Sunday service is a

journey or pilgrimage in which we are drawn out of

our own concerns to join a community in

exploration and to feel a renewed connection with

the sacred in life. The service may be partly a time

of reflection, partly an opportunity to experience a

challenge, partly a time to mourn or celebrate, and

partly a time to serve Life. At the end of the

journey, the individual is alone again, but renewed

and inspired to go out into the world.

Each week we gather to worship and be together

on Sunday mornings. Our services are typically

geared towards adults. Children and youth

participate in Religious Education classes during

worship. We offer childcare for children five and

under in Room 28-29. If you are not able to be

with us in person, you are welcome to live stream

with us on Sundays on our YouTube channel.

Nov 3, 9 & 11 am:

“A Sanctuary of Remembrance &

Belonging”

Drs. Henry Sgrecci & Jasmin Lee,

Cedar Lane Choirs & Chamber

Musicians, Revs. Abhi Janamanchi &

Katie Romano Griffin, & Intern Minister

Dayna Edwards

In this multigenerational service dedicated to

remembering our beloveds who have died, we

explore what it takes to create a sanctuary of

belonging strong enough to hold our deepest

sorrows and deep enough to sustain our

commitment to practice hospitality. The Youth

Choir will sing "The Lone Wild Bird” and the Choir

will present selections from Clif Hardin's

"Requiem" which he composed in1993 in the

likeness of the Christian mass of the dead. His

selection of texts from eighteenth and nineteenth-

century poets addressing grief, faith, and

remembrance reflects Unitarian Universalist

values and beliefs.

The Choir will also premiere "Sanctuary: An

Anthem to Love," composed by Charlie Barnett

with text written by Cedar Lane member Sandy

Shaw, in honor of Cedar Lane's act of faith to be a

sanctuary congregation. With chamber musicians

and soloists, these works represent a major

cornerstone in Unitarian Universalist choral

repertoire.

Nov 10, 9 & 11 am:

“Called to Act on Climate”

Nate Hultman & Rev. Abhi Janamanchi

Climate strikes, strong science, and an energized

politics are focusing global attention on the

urgency of addressing the climate crisis. How do

our spiritual values and practice help us discern a

way forward in our lives, our community, our

country, and world? The service will investigate.

We will share the plate with Interfaith Power and

Light.

Cedar Lane member and board trustee Nate

Hultman is associate professor at the University of

Maryland School of Public Policy and director of

the Center for Global Sustainability. From 2014-

2016, Nate worked at the White House on the

Obama Administration’s climate and energy policy

team. During this time, he helped develop the US

2025 climate target, worked on US bilateral

2

engagements with China, India, Brazil and others,

and participated in the international climate

negotiations in Lima and Paris. He was recently

lead author of the America’s Pledge 2018 Report,

Fulfilling America’s Pledge: How Cities, States,

and Businesses are Leading the way to a Low-

Carbon Future. He has participated in the UN

climate process for over 20 years, and was a

contributing author to the IPCC Fifth Assessment

Report and Special Report on Renewable Energy.

Nov 17, 9 & 11 am:

“Abundant Living”

Cedar Lane Board of Trustees &

Members

What does our mission call us to be and do? Our

UUA President the Rev. Susan Frederick Gray

provides a compelling answer: “This is no time for

a casual faith.” During this week of furlough for

our senior staff team, join the Cedar Lane Board

of Trustees and other Cedar Lane members in a

service and conversation about what our mission

and values call us to be and do in these times.

Nov 24, 9 & 11 am:

“An Ethic of Gratitude”

Rev. Abhi Janamanchi

“Gratitude should be at the center of Unitarian

Universalist theology,” says the Rev. Galen

Guengrich, minister of All Souls church in New

York. When we cultivate a discipline of

gratitude—that is, integrating into our lives daily

rituals that enable us to recognize and name the

things for which we are grateful— he says,

inevitably “reminds us how utterly dependent we

are on the people and the world around us for

everything that matters.” And from this recognition

of interdependence flows what he calls an “ethic

of gratitude” which “demands that we nurture the

world that nurtures us in return.” The services

will include a child dedication ceremony. If you

would like your child or grandchild dedicated

during the service, please contact Ashley DelSole

([email protected]).

justice, equity and compassion in human

relations; and encourage free and responsible

search for truth and meaning. We’ll talk about all

this in …ROOTS! Drop-in and join us! Childcare

Volunteer Manager, shares the many benefits that

volunteering and inter-generational programs

have on healthy aging. Volunteering offers vital

help to people in need while bringing communities

together. Learn how these benefits can be even

greater for the volunteer. She will also discuss

how we can dispel the myths of both youth and

aging by focusing on their positive aspects as well

as those of everyone in between.

Montgomery County police targeting people of

color. This includes:

1. Questioning a black child about counterfeit

money, which was obviously play money;

2. Searching and racially insulting four black

men while they waited for a ride to work; and,

3. Killing Robert Lawrence White, who was

walking at night, carrying no weapon, and

committing no crime.

You can help make Montgomery County safer for

everyone. Come to the Police Accountability

The Need to Grow

Fri, Nov 15, 6:30 – 9:30 pm, Lounge

Join us for a potluck at 6:30 and 7 pm for the

movie! Open to all.

The United Nations estimates that at the rate we

are depleting our farmland, we have fewer than 60

years of soil left on Earth. Can we feed the world

without destroying the planet? The answer

depends on what we do now!

The good news is, there ARE solutions. The Need

to GROW takes you inside the hearts and

innovations of three very different leaders - an 8-

year-old girl challenges the ethics of a beloved

organization - a renegade farmer struggles to

keep his land as he revolutionizes resource-

efficient agriculture - and an accomplished

visionary inventor faces catastrophe in the midst

of developing a game-changing technology.

Narrated by Rosario Dawson, The Need to

GROW delivers an epic story of solutions and the

struggles to implement them. It will make you

laugh, make you cry, give you chills, and inspire

you to participate in the restoration of the Earth.
