Mark 2:1-12

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man

2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and thenlowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

In Mark 2 Jesus heals a lame man that was lowered down through the roof. Our Lord saw that this man's main problem was sin, so the first thing He says is "Son, your sins are forgiven!" This caused great distress among the Pharisees that were present.

So what is worse? Being sinful or being lame? I think you know this answer but we will explore it a little more in depth and maybe answer some questions like;

"Is it a sin to get a tattoo?""Is it a sin to play the lottery?""Is it a sin to golf on Sunday?""Is it a sin to even think about sinning?"

Just How Bad is Sin?

Just How Bad is Sin?

Rom. 6:23 – for the wages of sin is death

Death is separation, in this case separation from God. Sin keeps us separated from God and will continue to do so for eternity, this is what hell is. Sin has eternal results and it also impacts our lives and the lives of others.

1. Sin always causes us to go further than we intended to go.

1. Sin always causes us to go further than we intended to go.

1. Sin always causes us to go further than we intended to go.

Proverbs 6:27-2827 Can a man scoop fire into his lap

without his clothes being burned?28 Can a man walk on hot coals

without his feet being scorched?

1 Corinthians 6:1212 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.

1 Corinthians 6:1212 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.

Is it a sin to get a tattoo, I think it can be taken too far!

Sin, you become a slave to it.

2 Peter 2:19They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”

Addictive behavior such as gambling can take control of our lives and master us.

Rom. 6:16 “Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

2. Sin always exposes someone to either danger or pain.

When Achan sinned (Josh. 7), the whole nation suffered defeat in battle and thirty-six men were killed. When he was caught, his family was executed with him. Even godly men such as Daniel, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel suffered along with the rest of the nation during the Babylonian captivity. Sometimes we suffer because we are associated with other people who are sinners.

What you don’t do can also hurt someone else and deprive them of a blessing.

James 4:1717 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Matt 25:4545 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Is it a sin to play golf on Sunday? Maybe there are better thingsto do.

3. Repentance is increasingly difficult.

Five times in the book of Hebrews we find this kind of warning ‘Be careful! If you go too far you will find that you cannotcome back.’

First Warning: Hebrews 2:1-4 The warning to pay attention.Second Warning: Hebrews 3:7-4:11 The warning against unbelief.Third Warning: Hebrews 6:4-8 The warning against falling away.Fourth Warning: Hebrews 10:26-31 The warning to persevere. (This warning is directed against deliberate ongoing sin.)Fifth Warning: Hebrews 12:14-29 The warning against refusing God.

Romans 1:21–24

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

4. Sin leaves a permanent area of weakness at one point in our life.

James 1:14-15 - but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Temptation -> Enticed -> Conceived -> Sin -> Death

Tempted -> Enticed -> Conceive -> Sin -> Death

Temptation is not a sin, Jesus was tempted. But it is not wise to expose yourself to temptation.

Enticed, you start thinking about the benefit of committing the sin. Thinking about sinning?

Enticed, you start thinking about the benefit of committing the sin. Thinking about sinning?

Conceived, you start to plan on how to commit the sin, and maybe how not to get caught doing it, justifying it or minimizing it.

Sin, actually doing the sin. Some sins are only committed in the mind, lust for example.

The final result is death, separation from fellowship with God.

5. Sin causes us to lose things we can never regain.

Jer 5:2525Your wrongdoings have kept these away;

your sins have deprived you of good.

Jer 5:2525Your wrongdoings have kept these away;

your sins have deprived you of good.

Hebrews 12:15-1715 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing,he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.

6. The long-range fruit of evil will be reaped.

Gal 6:7-8 - Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

7. Sin also effects generations to come.

Deut. 5:9 -You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.

If a man says he has no sin, he is a liar.

1 John 1:8-108 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Because it is there.

Bring every thought into captivity.

2 Corinthians 10:5

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Examine ourselves

1 Corinthians 11:27-3127 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.

Hmm, yeah. God is still working with me on those.

Psalm 90:88You have set our iniquities before you,

our secret sins in the light of your presence.

James 5:1616Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Romans 8

Life Through the Spirit

8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
