Fight Hunger in Houston Through Souper Bowl of Caring

Help fight hunger in Houston through the HBA’s annual Souper Bowl of Caring dona-tion drive, January 1 through February 24, 2015. Members can support the effort through monetary donations and through volunteering at the Houston Food Bank on February 24. According to Feeding America, the Houston Food Bank is the largest food bank in the nation, distributing more food to its partnership agencies. Texas has one of the highest rates of child food insecurity in the nation, and every day, one in five residents of Houston goes hungry. The Souper Bowl of Caring is a na-tional movement to fight hunger and poverty in

local communities, centered around the NFL’s Super Bowl Sunday. One hundred percent of donations to the HBA’s drive will go to the Houston Food Bank,

where just $1 buys three meals. The HBA also will sponsor a day of volunteer service on Saturday, February 24, from 8:00 a.m. until noon. This is a family event to sort and box food donations for programs served by the Food Bank.

For more information, contact Bonnie Sim-mons at 713-759-1133 or [email protected], or visit the HBA website to donate or volunteer.

YOUR COMMUNITY

The holiday season is upon us. Imagine facing this season as a former foster youth with no holiday traditions or family support. These young people are struggling to transition into adulthood without the traditional support and guidance of a loving family – the holiday season is a difficult time for many. The Houston Bar Association is proud to sponsor a holiday party for participants in the pro-grams of the HAY Center. This year approximately 100 youth and 50 of their children ages 7 and under are expected to attend. With your help, we hope to be able to provide a festive party and gifts to these young people.

There are several ways you can help with your tax deduct-ible gift:• cash donations for the holiday meal to be served;• cash donations to purchase door prizes for the event;• new, unwrapped toys for chil-dren ages 1 thru 7 years of age All donations may be mailed or delivered to the Houston Bar Association, 1111 Bagby, FLB 200, Houston, Texas 77002. Checks should be made payable to the Houston Bar Foundation.

All donations must be re-ceived by December 5, 2014 for the December 18th celebration.

HAY Center Holiday Donations

The Houston Alumni and Youth (HAY) Center is currently seeking volunteers to empower current and former foster youth by serving as a Transition Coach. When a foster youth ages out of care, at age 18, they often lack the experience and knowledge to live on their own and are at high risk for dropping out of school, homelessness, unemployment, early parenthood, and crime. Volunteers willing to commit approximately 10 hours each month, serving as a transition coach, could drastically change all this. A Transition Coach is a caring, responsible, adult volunteer who serves as a trusted friend

and guide to a youth, currently living in foster care, who is close to aging out of the system. The primary role of the Transition Coach is to determine what skills and resources are needed for the youth they are matched with to success-fully transition out of foster care to indepen-dent living. The coach helps to ensure that the youth develops important academic and life skills, sets goals to achieve those skills, moni-tors goals, is exposed to new opportunities and a wide array of resources, makes positive life choices, stays in school, and graduates with a plan for pursuing post-secondary education and/or employment.

Volunteers are matched with a youth, age 16 or older. They meet with the youth in their current placement or in some other agreed upon public place. The volunteer and youth develop a meeting schedule that works for them. Youth live across greater Houston and all surrounding areas. Training and ongoing support are provided. For more information, please contact Laura Meares at 713-295-2516 or [email protected]. Visit the HAY Center on the web at www.haycenter.org.

What happens to kids my age if they take drugs? If I get in trouble now, how can it affect my future? What if I’m only holding something bad for someone else? HBA members and Houston area medical professions answered these and many more questions about the legal and health consequences of substance abuse on Oc-tober 16 through the Interprofessional Drug Education Alliance (IDEA) Program. The interactive program educates 5th graders about the realities of using drugs, alcohol and tobacco, including how these substances affect their growing bodies and minds. Teams of an attorney and a medical professional visited 19 elementary schools in six school districts, as well as a private school, reaching 1,800 students. The program will be held again in the spring, giving additional schools and students the opportunity to participate. The HBA would like to thank the HBA members and medical professionals at right who presented the program. If you are interested in volunteering, email [email protected].

The HBA/HBF’s Veterans Legal Initiative (VLI) has received its fourth grant from the Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF). The HBF received a $60,000 grant to continue its work through a coalition of local

bar associations to serve veterans in 17 counties. The grant allows the VLI to conduct weekly legal advice clinics at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, as well as Saturday clinics in surrounding counties, in conjunction with other local bar associations. The clinics provide legal advice to all U.S. veterans and spouses of deceased veterans, as well as intake for continuing repre-sentation through the HBA’s Houston Volunteer Lawyers. The grant funds outreach and additional staffing for case management. “The Houston Bar Association and the Houston Bar Foundation are committed to serving those who have protected our freedom with cour-age and sacrifice,” said HBA president, Carter Crow. “This grant from the Texas Access to Justice Foundation enables us to continue outreach to veterans in their own communities through our legal advice clinics. Lawyers are the only ones who can provide pro bono legal services, and we are privileged to have this opportunity to serve those who have served us.”

TAJF awarded grants totaling more than $426,000 to 11 nonprofit organizations that will help fund legal aid services for Texas veterans. With these grants, public interest and pro bono lawyers will be able to provide legal representation to veterans with civil legal problems such as denial of benefits or disability, family law matters arising from deployment, and other issues that may arise due to a veteran’s absence from home during military service. Last year, TAJF grantees helped more than 8,800 veterans obtain access to the justice system. “With Texas having the second-highest population of veterans, it is essential that we provide legal services for those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” Richard L. Tate, chair of the board of direc-tors of the Texas Access to Justice Foundation, said. “Whether it’s through legal clinics, a staff attorney or help from a pro bono lawyer, these organizations will provide the representation they need and deserve.” The Texas Access to Justice Commission—through its Champions of Justice Gala—raised more than $350,000 in 2014 from law firms and corporate sponsors. Now in its fifth year, the Champions of Justice Gala has raised more than $1.75 million for veterans’ legal services since its inception. Along with funds from the Gala, additional support from the TAJF supports the grants to the selected nonprofit organiza-tions.

Veterans Legal Initiative Receives Grant from Texas Access to Justice Foundation

The Veterans Legal Initiative needs your help! Please consider signing up as a volunteer and helping veterans in Houston and surrounding areas get the legal help they need. Sponsored by the Houston Bar Foundation and Houston Bar Association, in conjunction with other local bar associations, the VLI hosts weekly legal advice clinics on Fridays, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Saturday morning clinics, from 9:00 a.m.-noon, in counties including Fort Bend, Mont-gomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Walker and others. The VLI has a particular need for attorneys to volunteer at some of the Saturday legal advice clinics in these surrounding counties. In addition, attorneys are needed to represent low income veterans pro bono in civil cases including family law, wills and probate, consumer law, landlord/tenant and other matters. We also need attorney volunteers who are accredited to handle VA ben-

efits appeals for veterans. As a VLI volunteer, you will receive emails from the VLI with opportunities to volunteer, whether at clinics or through handling cases. No previous clinic experience is necessary to volunteer at one of the legal advice clinics. An orientation, resource materials and assistance from the VLI staff attorney are available at each clinic. Said longtime VLI volunteer Bob Devlin, “When you talk to veterans, you realize they have no one to talk to regarding their legal problems. I don’t know that most of the bar knows the needs our veterans have, and I don’t think they realize the satisfaction they can get from volunteering. You can’t put it into words.” A volunteer form is available on the HBA website at www.hba.org/services/veterans-legal-initiative. For more information, contact Tara Shockley at 713-759-1133 or [email protected].

On September 17, Houston Bar Association members read to over 8,000 students in 96 local elementary schools in 22 school districts, as well as private schools. Volunteers read the book, “House Mouse, Sen-ate Mouse” during interactive presentations with 3rd-5th graders, then donated the books to the schools’ libraries. The HBA each year sponsors activities to educate the public about the importance of U.S. Constitution in daily life. The HBA also underwrote classroom guides through Houston Chronicle’s Chronicle in Education Program and Readers are Leaders Foundation. “Celebrate Constitution Day” helps teens learn about the First Amendment through using the newspaper in thought-provoking dis-

cussions and activities. The program reached more than 26,000 students in 330 classrooms. To highlight the rights and responsibilities of U.S, citizens to serve on a jury, HBA President Carter Crow, Administrative Judge Robert Schaf-fer, and District Clerk Chris Daniel spoke to all citizens who reported for jury duty on September 17 and presented each one with a pocket-size copy of the U.S. Constutition. The HBA would like to thank those HBA members who participated in the Constitution Day Reading Program. Visit hba.org/volunteers to see a list of readers.

The Harris County Law Library re-cently launched an updated website (www.harriscountylawlibrary.org) that features a user-friendly design. Throughout the new site, users will find intuitive links to guide them to desired content. An attorney looking for CLE opportunities at the Law Library can now click the “Events” button to find a complete, up-to-date listing and can down-load a calendar entry directly to Outlook or a mobile device. Similar graphical buttons are used throughout the website to organize links to legal research tools, Harris County resources, the Law Library’s catalog, and more. In addition to the eye-catching design, the website features new content for all members

of the Houston legal community. Research guides bring together the Law Library’s print and electronic resources for differ-ent practice areas and each guide features a “Practice Essentials” section to highlight the most practical and most commonly-used resources on a given subject. For resources available on the Web, three new pages are available with links to online legal research tools, Harris County resources, and websites offering Texas and federal cases, statutes, and regulations. There are also links to the Law Library’s LinkedIn page, where users can find information about new resources, events, and legal research tips. For more in-formation about the new content, visit www.harriscountylawlibrary.org today.

A committee of judges and attorneys select an award in several categories. Awards are presented by the judiciary at a special luncheon in May in the Ceremonial Courtroom at the Harris County Civil Courthouse. Each winner receives a custom designed award for their office and the recipients names appear on permanent plaques in

the Harris County courthouses. The nomination deadline is Monday, March 2, 2015. Attorneys or firms may self-nominate or may be nominated by another individual, firm or organization. A log of the nominee’s pro bono service during the calendar year 2014 must be submitted, along with the nomination form, to the HBA office by March 2. The pro bono work may be per-formed through any recognized legal services provider. A nomination form will be available on the HBA website, www.hba.org.
