Greetings!

This past winter was a busy and exciting time of year for House of Hope!

As the field of Chemical Dependency continues to change its methodology in addressing multiple needs of clients, so has the House of Hope. This is apparent with our “holistic / person centered approach” which is proving to be effective in treating individuals who have Chemical Dependency and / or Mental Health issues. Three months ago, the House of Hope began implementation of new program services to enhance our approach. These services include: Yoga, Art Therapy, Equine Therapy, Nutrition, Life Skills Development, and other support services to reduce client barriers during and after treatment.

We obtained a license through the Department of Human Services to specialize in services for individuals who have Chemical Dependency and Mental Health issues. As a result of this action, our mental health services include not only client access to a psychiatrist who provides medication assessments and maintenance, but also utilization of a licensed mental health professional to conduct mental health assessments and provide individual psycho-therapy.

Our growth and progress is firmly rooted in the support that we receive from people like you and businesses within the Mankato and surrounding communities. Thank you!

Expanding Hope

House of Hope, Inc. is a non-profit (501 C-3) agency that provides residential chemical dependency and mental health treatment to adult women in the Mankato, MN and surrounding areas. One of our missions is to reduce women’s issues of homelessness and untreated chemical dependency / mental health issues while providing the framework for the development of a recovery program.

Due to a substantial increase of these issues, House of Hopes vision / mission is to expand

the bed capacity of our Women’s Program with the goal of decreasing client vulnerabilities,

a reduction in homelessness rates, and an increase in “purpose” recognition for the clients

that we serve. We are requesting monetary donations from the community to offset the cost

associated with this expansion.

This campaign is not about monetary donations to a cause that does not have a substantial emotional and financial impact on everyone, nor is it a “competitive” campaign with other service providers. It is a campaign about women who are living in their cars year around, fearing for their safety. It is about facing each day feeling as though the thought of depression and the pain of substance use withdrawal will never subside.

Client Care

The House of Hope, Inc. has added a new positon for all of our facilities. This new position

is called “Residential & Community Support Specialist.” This position has been filled by

Jamie Portner, who was our Mankato Women's counselor. Jamie will work with clients

beyond recovery initiation through stabilization and into recovery maintenance. Jamie will

serve as a guide to help with decision making and support steps towards recovery. She will

support positive change by helping clients who return home after treatment or the criminal

justice system to avoid relapse, build community support for recovery, and work on life

goals, such as relationships, work, housing, etc. Jamie will research client barriers of

housing, education, employment, transportation, legal issues, mental health services,

clinical services, family education and self-help groups. She will make referrals when a

client is in treatment at the House of Hope and 4 months post discharge after successful

completion of treatment.

Evening Chemical Health Assessments

The House of Hope Inc. has added a new position in our Mankato facilities. This position is

Assessor/Continuing Care Coordinator. Leah Hanson accepted this position. She was

previously a counselor at our Fairmont facility. This new position provides individuals who

are seeking chemical health assessments schedule flexibility. For a Chemical Health

assessment appointment, please call Leah at (507)779-7585.

THE YEAR IS 1916

This will boggle your mind!

The year is 1916 “One hundred years ago”.

What a difference a century makes!

Here are some statistics for the Year 1916:

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub, and only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year ...

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year.

A dentist $2,500 per year.

A veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year.

And, a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at home

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

The Five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza

2. Tuberculosis

3. Diarrhea

4. Heart disease

5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars ...

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30.

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was neither a Mother's Day nor a Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write, and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at local corner drugstores.

Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach, bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!" (Shocking?)

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help...

There were about 230 reported™ murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !
