Dr. Langevin has been the Principal Investigator of several NIH-funded studies investigating
the role of connective tissue in low back pain and the mechanisms of acupuncture, manual
and movement-based therapies. Her previous studies in humans and animal models have
shown that mechanical tissue stimulation during both tissue stretch and acupuncture causes
dynamic cellular responses in connective tissue. Her current work focuses on the effects of
stretching on inflammation resolution mechanisms within connective tissue, and their
relevance to chronic musculoskeletal pain and cancer.

Medical cannabis in Canada: Implications for integrative health care
Workshop Facilitators:
Lynda G. Balneaves
Workshop Objectives:
Workshop attendees will engage in the following:
1. Develop understanding of the current regulations and policies in Canada related to medical and non-
medical cannabis.
2. Review the current evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of medical cannabis and its role in
integrative health care.
3. Discuss and identify research priorities and challenges for medical cannabis in the context of integrative
health care.
Intended Audiences:
Integrative health care practitioners and researchers
Workshop Description:
This workshop will combine didactic lectures with small and large group discussion to explore the current
regulatory environment surrounding medical and non-medical cannabis, the current evidence regarding the
efficacy and safety of medical cannabis across diverse health conditions, and identify priorities and
challenges to conducting medical cannabis research. The lectures and group discussions will focus on the
role of medical cannabis within integrative health care, drawing on the field's expertise related to natural
health products and experience of being positioned by some as a stigmatized form of health care. Workshop
lectures will cover the following topics: 1) Current regulations of medical cannabis in Canada; 2) Impending
legalization of non-medical cannabis in Canada; 3) Latest evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of
medical cannabis; and 4) Potential role of the integrative health care practitioners related to medical and
non-medical cannabis. Small group discussions will be held with participants regarding the practice
opportunities presented by cannabis as well as related research priorities. Barriers to cannabis research and
practice and potentials solutions will also be identified among the small groups. The workshop will conclude
with a large group discussion identifying the top practice and research priorities related to cannabis.
Anticipated Outcomes:
From this workshop, participants will become more informed regarding the current regulatory context
surrounding cannabis in Canada and identify potential practice and research opportunities presented by
medical cannabis. Research priorities relevant to integrative health care will be identified, as will strategies to
overcome challenges to conducting medical cannabis research in Canada. It is hoped this workshop will
increase awareness among the integrative health care community in Canada about the potential
opportunities and challenges posed by cannabis and to increase capacity within this field.

Increasing chances to have your abstract accepted for national and
international scientific symposium and events: A practical workshop
Workshop Facilitators:
Chantal Morin, Nathalie Trottier
Workshop Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
* dentify essential elements of a scientific abstract
* Describe essential criteria for an abstract to be accepted for national and international symposium and
events
* Write high quality abstract from research results
Intended Audience:
Osteopaths, osteopathic students, osteopathic research teachers and other symposium participants with an
interest for the scientific abstract writing skills.
Workshop Description:
An important number of abstracts is submitted in various health related congresses each year. How can we
produce high quality abstracts that stand out? What are the key components that the reviewer is expecting?
Even if a study is very interesting and well done, abstracts that are not well structured and incomplete are
often refused. Since abstract is the only written available description of a research to participants in a
conference, writing high quality scientific abstracts can significantly increase the chances of being accepted
into national and international conferences. Unfortunately, many clinician-scientists had no or few training or
experience with scientific abstracts writing.
The creation of a workshop to foster those writing skills was one of the activities request by participants of the
Osteopathy-SIG 2016 workshop and the subsequent need assessment online survey. This workshop thus aims
to inform participants of the essential elements to be included in a high quality scientific abstract. Examples
of abstracts will be discuss and improve with suggestions from the group and the facilitators. A practical
session is also planned to allow participants to practice writing a scientific abstract and to received
constructive feedback about their specific research abstract. This workshop may lead to the creation of a
mentorship program for the SIG members.
Anticipated Outcomes:
This workshop may help members to review more critically their abstract before submission to national or
international congresses. It may also create some collaboration or networking opportunities. Finally, we thing
that the experience of this workshop might help us to develop a mentorship program for the Osteopathy SIG
members in 2019 (a priority also identified in the need assessment online survey results).

Fostering fairness in TCAIM research dialogue: Struggles and strategies
Workshop Facilitators:
Nadine Ijaz, John Weeks, Antony Porcino
Workshop Objectives
* To clarify the distinctions between advocating for traditional, complementary, alternative and integrative
medicine (TCAIM) and advocating for balanced respect for the state of TCAIM science.
* To empower those working in the TCAIM field to more pro-actively and effectively respond to ongoing
attacks on this area of research
* To share experiences and perspectives as to the strengths and challenges associated with particular
strategic responses
* To foster the formation of collaborative response networks between those working in diverse TCAIM areas
• Intended Audience
Researchers, practitioners, educators, and policy advocates working in the field of traditional,
complementary, alternative and integrative medicine
Workshop Description
Across the globe, the science supporting traditional, complementary, alternative and integrative medicine
(TCAIM) and the work of TCAIM researchers are frequently and sometimes ruthlessly attacked. The scientific
community’s silence—even from other scientific supporters and researchers—effectively condones the
attacks. One outcome is that TCAIM policy discussions that shape access to TCAIM services are frequently
informed more by bias than by evidence. For example, the UK National Institute for Health and Care
Excellence (‘NICE’) held acupuncture to a different standard, effectively excluding it from treatment
guidelines for backpain and osteoarthritis. The US government’s National Center for Complementary and
Integrative Health (NIH NCCIH) regularly hears calls to end funding of its “quackademic medicine”. Here in
Canada, TCAIM research positions, projects, and institutions have been threatened and publicly derided with
seeming impunity. At times, entire fields or professions are subject to actions based on assertions that they
have no scientific basis, even as evidence increasingly emerges. Usually these attacks on the science go
unanswered. Who is supposed to respond?
This workshop aims to help address this gap: by empowering those working in the TCAIM field take positions
for respectful science and craft appropriate strategies to respond pro-actively and productively to attacks on
this area of research. Structured as an interactive session framed by short presentations from TCAIM
researchers, practitioners, and policy advocates (names to be confirmed), participants will have a chance to
discuss their experiences, concerns, and strategies related to the workshop theme.
Anticipated Outcomes
By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify key resources needed for a quick, effective
response. They will know the key features and language needed to shape the dialogue, and ways of
responding so that defensible TCAIM research viewpoints are heard. Finally, we hope to establish the
groundwork needed for collaborative networks to aid timely response to future attacks on TCAIM.

Workshop 3
René-Lévesque A
Effective communication and messaging strategies for CAM in an age of
attention deficit, media transformation, and universal scepticism
Workshop Facilitators;
Anne Leis, Michael Epstein, Dugald Seely, Lynda Balneaves
Workshop Objectives:
* The workshop is intended to explore strategies for effective communication and message formulation
pertaining to complementary and integrative medicine within conventional and social media.
* Through a combination of discussion, reflection, and experiential methods involving participatory
educational theatre, participants will have the opportunity to learn and apply some of the basic principles of
effective communication in a variety of media contexts.
Intended Audience:
This workshop will focus on developing effective strategies to communicate complementary/integrative
medicine information within popular media, including social media as well as more traditional media sources.
As such the workshop will be of interest to a diverse audience of complementary and integrative
professionals who would like to explore ways to become media content creators. It may also appeal to
researchers and others eager to increase the quality and quantity of media stories to represent the growing
evidence base for the safe and effective use of an integrative approach to health and wellness.
Workshop Description:
This workshop will focus on developing effective strategies to communicate complementary and integrative
medicine information within social media as well as traditional media sources. In partial response to negative
media portrayals of complementary and integrative medicine, we will advocate for people working in this
field to either become media content creators or otherwise influence the production of media content. Our
intention is to promote media coverage that provides a balanced, informative, and accurate representation
of the growing evidence base for the safe and effective use of an integrative approach to health and
wellness.
Anticipated Outcomes:
The workshop will follow the educational theatre format. The presenters will enact a series of skits, each
focused on a different workshop goal, for example understanding the relationship between traditional and
social media, ways that participants can develop their own media content, or means to facilitate
collaborative relationships with traditional journalists. Facilitated discussions will help reinforce key learning
concepts and allow participants the opportunity to role-play and identify opportunities for applying these
concepts in their professional work. Throughout the workshop, we will use current examples to highlight
common issues within popular media representations of complementary and integrative medicine, and
promote thinking about innovative ways to address those issues in future communication.
